Crosspool residents vote in police and crime commissioner election

Crosspool residents are casting their votes today to choose a police and crime commissioner (PCC) for South Yorkshire.

The candidates are:

  • David Allen – English Democrats
  • Jonathan Arnott – UKIP
  • Nigel Bonson – Conservative
  • Robert Teal – Liberal Democrat
  • Shaun Wright – Labour

Will you be voting in this election? If not, why not? At last month’s Crosspool Forum Open Meeting, opinion was divided on the idea of a publicly-elected police and crime commissioner.

One report this morning from a polling station in the area said that turnout so far seemed to be lower than for a general or local election.

Chairman’s report

(Ian Hague). The Forum is in its 10 year & has made positive progress, still publishing the Clarion & very popular website. Acting as a voice for the local residents & continuing to have excellent relations with the Council, police etc. The usual Christmas trees were erected. & then Jubilee flags 8 bunting for the summer, floral displays, days out to (Stratford upon Avon), (BBC Salford Quays). Computer courses, Children’s Christmas disco, car boot sales. Crosspool Festival Week & Summer Fayre, Helpers and ideas to Ian please!

Treasurer’s report

(Chris Batchelor). Again a health end of year bank balance. (but as usual one bill still to come in – summer planters).

Nominations, resignations and election of committee members

Chris Batchelor (Treasurer) has resigned, & Marika Szabo (Hagg Copse & the Orchard). Anyone interested in joining the Management Committee to contact Ian or any member. A mandate was given to Ian & the committee to choose a new treasurer.

Police report

PC Louise Atha:

  1. Burglaries, although not a major problem at the moment residents were urged to keep their doors & lower windows locked at all times.
  2. Under-age alcohol (&soon, firework) purchase. Of 24 shops tested one was breaking the law by selling to under-age children.
  3. Operation Dark Nights starting soon- Halloween & Bonfire Night
  4. The Broomhill SNA have the lowest statistics for anti-social behaviour in the city! S/A drink-drive campaign will start again on 1st Dec.

Councillors questions and answers

  1. Election for a Police Commissioner (15th Nov). Both Geoff Smith & Rob Frost did not agree with the need for this extra role, but urged people to use their vote. Full information on the candidates may not come through the door (lack of volunteers) but can be found on the BBC websites.
  2. HGV vehicles in the Hagg Hill/Stephen Hill areas, Lorries are still following their satnavs & trying to use these routes. Better signage was requested.
  3. A57 roadwork’s progress? the new relationship with Amey is proving difficult for residents to access information about highways issues. Queries through the SWCA please
  4. Broomhill library? The financial details about the proposed move to Ashdell Rd are still under discussion.
  5. No.51 buses? First Bus is putting more resources into this route from next week with additional buses. Residents were asked to keep a note of any issues & pass these to the Councillors,

Events

The Precinct Christmas Trees will go up again, & a Children’s Disco has been arranged for Sunday 2nd December. Well attended Computer courses to continue in Jan 2013. Crosspool Festival Week expected to start on 29th June 2013..

Centenary Celebrations are in hand for 2013 to mark the 100th anniversary of Tapton Congregational Church & the first bus route in Sheffield Jan 1913, the No. 51. A suggested 2014 Crosspool Calendar – ideas/help please?!

  1. Broomhill – new Costa coffee shop opening on the ‘Cream site
  2. Hagg Copse expected to be put back to its original state in the spring, after the building work
  3. Road Show at Wesley Hall (31st Oct) – theme active ageing.

Find out more about Streets Ahead project

Work has now started on improving Sheffield’s roads and pavements as part of Streets Ahead.

You can find out more about the project, and get answers to any questions you may have, at Wesley Hall Methodist Church in Crookes on Wednesday 31 October 2012 between 2 and 5pm.

This event has been designed with older people in mind. Transport is available, so give them a ring on 0114 203 7212 and they’ll organise for you to be picked up and dropped home again.

Williamson Hardware in Broomhill: will move next door to make way for Sainsbury’s

Broomhill institution Williamson Hardware will move into an adjacent unit to make way for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The landlord of the unit gained planning permission to develop the site for a new occupier earlier this month and it has been confirmed that Sainsbury’s will take it on.

It is believed that Williamson will move into the smaller property next door which was until recently occupied by Blackwell’s bookshop.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said: “The future of local traders is important to us, and we are pleased that Williamson, a long standing local trader, has agreed plans with their landlord to relocate to another adjacent unit on Fulwood Road.”

Williamson has been trading in Broomhill for 52 years.

Crosspool residents left in the dark over faulty street lights

Dransfield Road, the lower part of Watt Lane and neighbouring roads into Ranmoor have been without working street lights for over a week.

The problem was reported on Sunday 7 October to Street Force but the street lights have not yet been repaired. We’re awaiting their response to find out how serious the issue is and when a repair will happen.

In the meantime, drivers and pedestrians are advised to take extra care on affected roads after dark.

Previous problems with street lights in this area were caused by a faulty underground cable, which can take up to 30 days to fix.

Update at 7pm: the street lights are working again now on Dransfield Road.

More recycling delays for Crosspool

Manchester Road: recycling should be collected tomorrow

Crosspool households on Manchester Road and Ringstead Avenue are still waiting for their blue bins and boxes to be emptied today.

Veolia have advised that they should all be emptied tomorrow (Tuesday).

Two weeks ago there were also delays to Veolia’s recycling service, with 12 roads in our area not having their recycling collected on the scheduled day.

If your blue bin and box didn’t get emptied yesterday then it should be dealt with today, according to Veolia.

Problems with collection lorries on Monday meant that around 12 roads in our area didn’t have their recycling collected. If you keep your bin and box left out today they should get emptied.

Sheffield residents recently moved to fortnightly collections, alternating between black wheelie bins one week and blue recycling bins/boxes the other.

Local reservoir sites earmarked for new housing: update

Earlier this year local people had real concerns about proposals to allocate green field sites in the Crookes area for new housing. Two of the sites mentioned were Hadfield Reservoir (behind School Road) and Lydgate Reservoir (off Evelyn Road).

The council has now dropped plans to use the Hadfield site for new houses but the Lydgate site has not been ruled out and remains under consideration. Yorkshire Water has confirmed that they are “undertaking further investigations” at the Lydgate site.

However the council has said in a statement that “to provide advice on the archaeological value and ecological value of the site, an ecological assessment and a desk based archaeological assessment is being carried out.”

Although the council hasn’t made up its mind yet, ostensibly the usually purpose of investigations like these are to see whether a site is suitable for development.

Local residents are concerned at the prospect of losing yet another green and open space and worried about the possible knock-on effect new housing will have on traffic, road safety and local schools.

Library services: Crosspool residents asked to give their views

Local library services could be cut further

Sheffield residents are being asked to give their opinion on local library services ahead of the council’s plan to make savings in this area.

Interim Director of Community Services Jan Fitzgerald has indicated that some services could change due to the amount of money that needs to be saved.

She said: “Some of the savings will have to come from our library services. Whilst trying to protect frontline services, we cannot guarantee that they will be untouched given the scale of the savings which will be required.”

You can give your views at www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraryreview or via a paper form which can be picked up at at any library or First Point. The consultation runs until 8 October.

Crosspool is currently served by two mobile library services and the nearest local lending library is in Broomhill.
