Crosspool Festival 2013

The fourth Crosspool Festival ran 28 June-7 July 2013.

This year the festival raised £1,300 for Weston Park Cancer Information and Support Centre and the 36th Sheffield Scout Group based on Benty Lane.

Our prize-winning cover designs on the theme of green Crosspool are by Freya Lomas, Lydgate Junior School (front) and Jack Pickering, Lydgate Infant School (back.) The entries can be seen in Alex Gage, Sandygate Road. We’d like to thank all the talented artists from both schools who entered.

Friday 28 June
WELL DRESSING DEDICATION
At 7pm outside the Crosspool Tavern Rev Frances Eccleston will dedicate the Crosspool floral display, created by local volunteers, where it will remain on view throughout the festival week.

SAT 29 June
CROSSPOOL OPEN GARDENS
Some new twists on the theme this year—see for yourself with a £4 programme available in advance from Lounge@Crosspool or participating gardens, or on the morning of the 29th from Stephen Hill Methodist Church. All funds raised in aid of charities. We are grateful to Lounge@Crosspool, 20 Sandygate Road [0114 266 7339] for handling ticket sales for this years festival.

Saturday 29 June
MESSY CHURCH WITH ROLY BAIN
Award-winning tops, cathedrals, prisons and schools. He is founder of Holy Fools, a loose-knit network of loose nits committed to clowning in ministry and worship. “Clowning is about….the mystery and love of the God of laughter and tears.” (Roly) This free event is suitable for children of all ages. Donations welcomed. St. Columba’s Church, 4pm.

Sunday 30 June
STREET MARKET: SELBORNE ROAD
12 noon to 4pm Lots of stalls – food, cakes, plants, crafts, jewellery, clothes, books
with music and dance by local schools and groups. Many local shops will be open and teas will be available.

Sunday 30 June
CROSSPOOL ART GROUP
During the Market, Crosspool Art Group will be exhibiting in the garden at 55 Selborne Road. Teas will also be available.

Weekdays
ENTERTAINMENT AT STEPHEN HILL CHURCH
Each weekday morning from 10.30 till 12.00, there will be entertainment in the Forum in Stephen Hill Church. Come and just relax with friends or join in the activities. All these free events are detailed below. There is a small charge for refreshments

Monday 1 July
SONGS FROM THE SHOWS
In the Forum in Stephen Hill Church, 10.30 – Ian Sharpe will entertain on the piano with Songs from The Shows.

Monday 1 July
TREASURE HUNT
Join 36th SHEFFIELD (St John’s Ranmoor) Beaver Colony on a Treasure Hunt around Crosspool, suitable for children up to 8 accompanied by an adult : older children are welcome to come with you. Collect a map from the Scout Hut on Benty Lane between 6 and 6.30pm, follow the map to gather the clues, and return to the Scout Hut by 7.15pm to collect your “Treasure”. Maps are £2 per family or £1 if any of the children in your group are in Beaver, Cub or Scout Uniform and necker (from any Scout Group). Refreshments are available at the Scout Hut until 7.30pm.

Monday 1 July
SCRIBBLE NIGHT
Scribble is a night for writers, poets, singers, storytellers and gossips. Come and spin us a yarn, share something interesting, or just listen and soak up the atmosphere. Local writers will be sharing their stories and poems in ten minute slots throughout the night. All welcome! If you want to share your material on the night, contact Chris on sheffield_writer@hotmail.co.uk. 7-9pm, St Columba’s, Manchester Road.

PRE-SCHOOL SING-ALONG
In the Forum in Stephen Hill Church, 10.30. Pre-school children are invited to bring young Mums (or Dads) for a Sing Song of your favourite Nursery Rhymes with Frances on the piano.

CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE
Come to the Lounge@Crosspool to hear about the work of our chosen charity for 2013.
No admission charge : refreshments available 1.30 pm, Lounge@Crosspool.

Tuesday 2 July
FUN RUN
Open to all Crosspool children up to 11, with races for Mums & Dads. Entry forms available from Lydgate Junior School.

Tuesday 2 July
FOLK CONCERT
Featuring Ken and Pete (Atkinson and Garratt) and the young local talents of Sophie Longshaw and Eve Scott. 7.30 pm in the Forum in Stephen Hill Church Interval refreshments—coffee & cakes. Advance tickets, £5 from Lounge@Crosspool, Bob Hodges (0114 230 3207) or Roger Kite (0114 230 6194).

Becky Howe will tell stories for children age 4—10, in Lounge@Crosspool, from 4pm. Spaces are limited so tickets [£2] MUST be bought in advance.

WILD DERBYSHIRE : PAUL HOBSON
Renowned photographer (2010 winner of European Wildlife Photographer of the Year) and author will discuss his latest book ‘Wild Derbyshire’, showing a selection of images and giving us a feel for the work of a wildlife photographer, and how he turned the idea of this book into a reality.

Copies will be available—more details & some stunning pictures on Paul’s website, www.paulhobson.co.uk.

Refreshments including wine will be served At St Columba’s, Manchester Road, 7.30 pm Admission Free — retiring collection for festival charities.

TABLE GAMES
Lots of different table games. Try your hand at a jigsaw or Scrabble or many other word or card games In the Forum in Stephen Hill Church, 10.30am.

GARDENERS QUESTION TIME
In the café, Valleyside Garden Centre Manchester Rd, 1.30 pm. Enjoy refreshments while you sort out your gardening problems with local expert Richard Jackson, who will answer
your questions on all aspects of plants and their care.

ADRIAN SCOTT
We are delighted to welcome Rivelin based author Adrian Scott who invites you to experience his recently published work The Mark Widdowson Blogs, set in South Yorkshire & the Peak District. 7.30pm The Plough, Sandygate Road, Admission Free — collection for festival charities.

ORGAN RECITAL
As part of their Centenary Celebrations, Tapton Hill Congregational Church will host a recital by John Silverton, performing works including Elgar : Triumphal March (Caractacus) Bach : Fantasia and Fugue in g minor. The Organ was built in 1870 and installed in the church in 1931. 7.30pm, Congregational Church Manchester Road. Tickets £5 from Church Treasurer 2308085 or Lounge@Crosspool.

FAMILY BARN DANCE
with live ceilidh band “Fine Fettle” Adults £6, children under 16 £3.50 includes a hot meal

Sunday 7 July
A PICNIC IN THE PARK
The four Crosspool/Sandygate Churches invite you to a picnic to mark the closing of the Crosspool Festival, in Lydgate Green, junction Lydgate Lane/Lydgate Hall Crescent at 12.30pm. Enjoy music from the Chapeltown Silver Band, and a brief address from Briony Broome, Chief Executive Officer of Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care.
Bring your rugs, picnics and children!
