The Sportsman pub to reopen on Friday 18 September

The refurbishment of the Sportsman pub on Benty Lane is due for completion in time for its reopening tomorrow (Friday 18 September).

The new look reflects a change in the approach of the Sportsman from a bar with a restaurant, to a restaurant with a bar. On entering the premises through the main entrance, black tiles, boarded by a carpeted area to the right, and a polished wood floor dining room to the left, direct you to the bar.

Work started in earnest when the pub closed for business last Sunday teatime and this week has seen vans, machinery and workers arrive to transform the premises in time for the reopening.

  1. Me and my future wife popped in on sat 16 oct at about 5.15pm for a few beers and some nibbles,we have done this so many many times over the past 5 years, the reason we always came to the sportsman was they always had beers on sale,a good varied nibble menu, and most of importantly of all, somewhere where you could go where it would be peaceful, imagine my horror at having to dodge kids running and screaming around the pub, swinging around the poles, this isn’t what I expected, kids running wild,no nibble menu and the”drinkers”herded into a small, cold, dark part of the pub,if I was the landlord of any pub nearby I would do exactly the opposite of the sportsman, and clear up,me and my girlfriend won’t be visiting the sportsman again until if and when things change to as they were
