Crosspool Spring clean: get involved

As part of Sheffield’s third annual spring clean, Crosspool Forum is arranging for local residents to join together to help to keep where we live clean.

Weather permitting, we initially plan to meet up on the area in front of Direct Travel on Sandygate Road this coming Saturday 2 April at 10am, before moving off to spend a couple of hours cleaning up the neighbourhood.

You don’t need any specialist cleaning skills, just a bit of enthusiasm!

Polling station changes for local elections and referendum in May

Sheffield City Council’s Returning Office is communicating with the Crosspool electorate to advise of changes to polling stations for the 2011 local elections and referendum.

Some residents will be moving polling station from Stephen Hill church on Benty Lane to Hallam FC’s ground on Sandygate Road.

The communication reads:

Following the general election in 2010 the Returning Officer held a review which recommended increasing the number of poling stations. In addition some established polling stations are unavailable for this May’s elections.

Full details of where you should vote will be printed on your polling card. The deadline for registering to vote is Thursday 14 April.

Tapton school to become an academy

Tapton school: to become an academy?

Tapton secondary school in Crosspool is to break away from the council to become an academy.

Governors feel such a move would be in the school’s best interest, earning it a bonus of more than £740,000 a year and allowing them to balance the books by negotiating better value services.

Teachers at Tapton are against the move, fearing that becoming an academy will not raise educational standards.

Two negative responses were received from parents when 2,000 letters were sent out.

King Edward VII school Community Fun Day

King Edward VII School are organising a Community Fun Day this Sunday, 20 March from 10am-2pm at their Darwin Lane site.

The day will feature a car boot sale, craft stalls, games, activities, a synthetic ice rink, food and drink. If you would like to get involved please contact Laura Drabble on 0114 268 2477 for more details.

Hallam finally win

Hallam recorded a long-overdue league win at the expense of Arnold Town on Tuesday night at Sandygate.

A goal by Simon Asquith in the 18th minute was enough to secure the three points.

Despite the win, the Countrymen still find themselves at the bottom of the NCEL Premier Division. They have played fewer league games than the teams around them, so still have chance to climb the table.

Hallam’s next match is tomorrow against Nostell Miners Welfare at Sandygate, kick off 3pm.

Hallam community skip: Wednesday 16 March

Following the success of the last community skip, Hallam Neighbourhood Watch has booked another for Wednesday 16 March.

This time it is in the parking lay by by the 51 bus stop on the right hand side going out of town next to golf course, opposite the Westminster Flats. It will be there from 8am to 12:30pm. This is to avoid any confusion with parents and children in the lay by up by the school as it’s not holiday time.

Please note, the skip is for household waste only. The following items will not be accepted:

  • fridges
  • freezers
  • gas bottles
  • asbestos
  • oil
  • car batteries
  • tyres
  • TVs
  • computers

The skip will be supervised at all times.

Submit a transport service request to Sheffield City Council

Sheffield city council is inviting suggestions for how to improve traffic flow, road safety or change facilities for road/pavement users in the city.

Crosspool residents can go to www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads/report/transport-service-requests to register requests, or alternatively you can call the council on 0114 273 5907.

All the requests will be considered and acknowledged within seven days, and the assessment will generally be undertaken within around three to four months. Information regarding the outcome will be announced when the Community Assembly has made a decision.

Crosspool-based football club Hallam FC have released images of their proposed new £280,000 clubhouse.

The new building will include a history of football visitors centre to celebrate Sandygate’s status of being officially the oldest football ground in the world. The developments are being funded by the late Roger Bell, who left a financial gift for the club when he passed away.

Hallam’s postponed 150th anniversary Boxing Day match against Sheffield FC has bee rearranged for Monday 2 May.

Slimming World campaign arrives in Crosspool

A new fitness campaign has been launched to accompany a new season of Slimming World classes in Crosspool.

A campaign launches this week to get the people of Sheffield working together to tackle obesity in the Sheffield after a national survey revealed that people who are overweight often suffer humiliation and embarrassment and have low confidence and low self-esteem, all of which seriously affect their everyday lives.

Experts acknowledge that waist measurement, as well as weight, is an indicator of an individual’s health. With an ‘at risk’ waist measurement of more than 88cm (35in) for women and 102cm (40in) for men, results of the survey show that 45% per cent of people in South Yorkshire and the surrounding area are in danger of developing severe health problems.

The Let’s Beat Obesity Together in Sheffield campaign, run by Slimming World, aims to bring the whole community together to encourage and support each other to lose weight and make Sheffield, and principally Crosspool, a happier and healthier place to live.
