Carers Week thanks the city’s unpaid carers

From the 8 June, it’s national Carers Week and a special time to thank all the unpaid carers who, young and old, care for someone in their family.

The person they care for may be at home, in hospital or in a care home – they might have a long term illness or a disability, a mental health condition or need extra help as they grow older.

Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers and every year Carers Week is held to raise awareness and highlight the challenges carers face.

A report from CarersUK published in April states that many unpaid carers are close to burnout because of the extra pressures on them during the COVID- 19 crisis.

In Sheffield, there are two organisations that support carers in the city- Sheffield Carers Centre that does everything it can to support adult carers and Sheffield Young Carers which supports carers who are aged 8 – 25.

If you would like to know more about Carers Week in Sheffield, you can look at: www.doyoucare.co.uk

This is where you can find advice about how you can be involved in supporting and thanking carers everywhere.

Thank you

Tonight Thursday 14th May at 8pm you are encouraged to join in by clapping on your doorstep, your balcony, your garden, or front room to celebrate the work of everyone at the frontline of the NHS and social care.

During these unprecedented and constantly changing times, tonight spare a special thought for the 10,000 Shared Lives carers who share their home and community life, working tirelessly to protect and support people of all ages with a physical disability, learning disability or mental illness, who need personal care and practical support.

Our clapping hands together echo our appreciation to the entire health and social care workforce and express our thanks and recognition for the valuable work those at the forefront of this pandemic do to protect and keep the most vulnerable safe.

Let’s hear it for Shared Lives carers!

Clap for Carers

clap thank you8pm Tonight 7th May 2020

It is a deeply moving tribute that captures the very essence of our communal spirit in these times of adversity that Clap for Carers gets louder and more joyous every week. It is also possibly the only time communities now come together to generate a rare feeling of release and togetherness. a faint memory of a previous era when the nation came together to eradicate a common enemy.

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the victory in Europe The Royal British Legion is calling on people across the UK to join in a moment of reflection and Remembrance, pausing for a Two Minute Silence at 11am tomorrow Friday 8th May.

In spite of social distancing and lockdown, we can all still take part in commemorating with pride and patriotism this very special occasion in the safety of our homes, by making and displaying from tomorrow and over the weekend, our own VE Day Great British Bunting.

Whirlow Coop

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is delighted to have been chosen to benefit from the Co-op Local Community Fund.

At a time when funds for community groups and charitable organisations are becoming more difficult to access, they’re incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a real difference in Sheffield.

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is raising funds to support the costs of running their education programmes on their working farm. It costs over £1million each year to run their charity and provide educational visits for children and young people. They have specialist programmes to help children and young people with additional learning needs and/or struggling with their mental health. They work with primary and secondary age children as well as those over sixteen.Whirlow Lamb

Their mission is to ensure there is a place in education for every child.

To help them raise vital funds, they’ll be relying on Co-op members. When a member buys selected products or services from the Co-op they earn a 5% reward for themselves, with a further 1% for local causes like Whirlow Hall Farm Trust.

The Co-op is looking to support organisations that make a difference in their local communities by protecting & improving community spaces, helping people reach their full potential by developing their skills or promoting health and well-being.

Co-op members can choose Whirlow Hall Farm Trust as their local cause by visiting membership.coop.co.uk/causes/34939. They really hope that people will visit the website and donate their 1% to the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust.

If you’re not a member and would like to support them, you can join at your local store or online
at www.coop.co.uk.

When a community comes together they’re able to achieve great things, so they hope you can help promote their project.
