Tonight: convenience store planning application meeting

A reminder that you are invited to another meeting tonight at 6:30pm in St Columba’s church hall to discuss the proposed convenience store planning application in Crosspool.

The meeting has been arranged as a follow-up to the Extraordinary Open Meeting in September at which residents were given the opportunity to express their views on the proposed enlargement of the current Motor World premises on Lydgate Lane. Iain and Andy were voted by those present to represent them at the upcoming council planning meeting.

Tonight’s meeting includes the following on the agenda:

  • further information on planning legislation
  • approval to be sought from those present regarding Iain and Andy’s prepared presentation illustrating what impact, if any, the new development would have on local residents, the wider commercial community, and potentially the profound effect on the character of the whole area, before its submission to the planning committee
  • residents will be informed of some good news dispelling a story that has proliferated since the first meeting

It is possible that the application will be considered by the board at the council’s 3 November planning meeting.

Hallam FC v Sheffield FC 150th anniversary boxing day match

23 December update: the match has been postponed

The oldest football ground in the world in Crosspool is to host a Boxing day rematch between the world’s two oldest football clubs.

On Boxing day 1860, Hallam FC played Sheffield FC in the world’s first inter-club football match. The 2010 rematch at Sandygate marks the 150th anniversary of this historical game.

The day will include refreshments plus pre-match and half-time entertainment. And of course the Plough pub is just over the road from the ground.

Tickets are on sale now and are limited to Sandygate’s capacity of about 1,000. Standing is £10/£7 concessions, seating is £15/£12 concessions.

As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, an England C team will also play a Hallam XI at Sandygate on Tuesday 19 October.

Oddfellows open day on Tuesday 19 October

More than 200 years of friendship will be celebrated in Sheffield on Tuesday 19 October at an open day hosted by the Oddfellows.

Visitors to Tapton Hall on Shore Lane in Crosspool will be treated to birthday cake and drinks to mark the bicentenary of the fellowship society whose motto is ‘Making friends, helping people’.

The event, organised by the Oddfellows’ Over 50s Friendship Centre, runs from 11am to 3pm with stalls offering plants for sale, book club information, card making, and advice from the University of the Third Age.

The Oddfellows is a not-for-profit social organisation which runs a network of 151 branches across Britain. With a membership of 120,000, it offers a dedicated Citizens’ Advice Bureau phoneline, care information, and financial welfare support such as help with legal aid and funeral costs.

Lost tabby cat – can you help?

On Thursday 7 October a seven-year-old tabby cat called Marco went missing from his home on Barholm Road. Have you seen him?

He’s got a red collar with a disc containing his name and phone number. The owners are asking whether local residents could check garages, basements, greenhouses and sheds in case he is trapped inside.

There has been a possible sighting of him up near the Sportsman pub on the other side on Manchester Road.

Open Discussion Meeting to discuss convenience store planning application

Prior to the Sheffield City Council planning committee giving consideration to the proposed Lydgate Lane shop expansion plans, a further Open Discussion Meeting has been arranged for 6:30pm on Thursday 21 October in St Columba’s Church Hall.

The meeting has been arranged to make clear the impact the new development would have on local residents and the potentially profound effect on the character of the whole area and the wider commercial community.

Moreover and most importantly, approval from residents will be sought at the meeting regarding the arguments and issues that are proposed to be submitted to the planning board.

It is possible that the application will be considered at the 3 November planning meeting.

Green waste collections this week in S10

Crosspool householders are reminded that Veolia are due to collect green waste sacks this week (commencing 11 October 2010) in S10.

The final monthly S10 collection will then be in the week commencing 8 November 2010.

After the November collection, the service will revert back to the previous procedure, where residents are required to to phone Veolia on 0114 2734 567 option 1 and then leave them outside property boundaries for collection on the arranged date.

CDYST facilities upgrade: your ideas wanted

The Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) trustees are looking for suggestions from local residents for how the youth sports facilities might be upgraded in 2011.

The CDYST sports hall on Coldwell Lane was built in 1992 for use by individuals or groups requiring a base or hall for events. There is also a four-acre sports field for outdoor events such as sports matches or exhibitions.

The trustees are interested to hear how often residents use the CDYST facilities at the moment, what is in need of upgrading and what new equipment people would like to see.

Tavern Service Station planning application submitted

A planning application (10/03112/FUL) to extend the Tavern Service Station on Manchester Road is currently pending consideration.

Due to limited space in the existing premises, the service station is currently forced to turn away customers when it is too busy. In good weather, work and repairs can be undertaken on the front forecourt, but the owner is looking for a permanent solution.

It is proposed to extend the premises to provide four additional vehicle work stations. The overall standard of facilities will be improved, with the MOT testing areas re-sited.

The existing workshop and office occupy a site fronting Manchester Road, with access for pedestrians and vehicles from the main road. There is off road parking for a dozen cars with space for three work stations within the workshop. It is proposed that the new extension will run through at the same level, with access remaining as present via the Manchester Road.

For visual and aesthetic reasons, the extension will be constructed with facing materials to match the existing. A pitched roof will incorporate lights to provide both light and ventilation.

The overgrown area to the rear of the workshop, at 16-20 Sandygate Road, is currently used for the disposal of unwanted goods. The property and freehold owners are willing to sell the land to the service station owner and have made no objections to the proposed extension works.

A right-of-way for both the current owners of the 16-20 Sandygate Road property and the service station will be retained as a landscaped and paved access.

Lydgate Park outdoor gym

A new outdoor gym installed by the council and is now up and running in Lydgate Park.

Outdoor gyms are a new approach to health and fitness. They include much of the same equipment found in an indoor gym, but are specifically designed for outdoor use.

You don’t need any gym experience or special level of fitness to have a go. They are mainly for adults, but children may be able to use some of the apparatus with supervision.

Best of all, there’s no membership to pay!

Lydgate Park can be found at the top of Lydgate Lane, opposite Lydgate Infants School.
