Dead cat found in Manchester Road garden – can you help find the owner?

A dead cat has been found in a garden on Manchester Road near Den Bank Avenue.

The black and white cat has an orange collar with bell attached. It has black fur on the back and sides plus a white nose, mouth and chin, white paws and white tummy. No obvious address was attached.

There were no visible injuries, but it may have been hit on the main road and run into a garden.

The person who found the cat has asked us to post this in order to alert the owners. If you are worried the cat may be yours then you can see a photo of it here to check.

The council were due to collect the cat today. They will check for any microchip and try to contact the owner.

2015 Crosspool calendar available now

A new calendar featuring Crosspool scenes from over the years is on sale in local shops.

Many of the photos in the calendar are taken by local residents, plus there are some archive shots showing familiar locations looking very different in times gone by.

The 2015 Crosspool calendar is available for just £4 from Crosspool Pets and Enhance.

Money raised will help Crosspool Forum funds for local events and improvements to our neighbourhood.

Reverend Frances Eccleston officially made vicar of Crosspool

Last Thursday evening over 80 people attended a special service at St Columba’s Church for the licencing of the priest-in-charge.

This now means that Reverend Frances Eccleston is now officially licenced as vicar of Crosspool.

Bishop of Doncaster Peter Burrows and many other church dignitaries attended the service together with many of the local congregation.

At the same time Frances was licenced to the post of bishop’s adviser in pastoral care and reconciliation, a role which she will carry out alongside her duties in the parish.

Hallam FC Youdan Cup featured on Antiques Roadshow

The world's oldest football trophy — The world’s oldest football trophy

Hallam FC was mentioned as part of a feature on Sunday night’s Antiques Roadshow on BBC1.

The Crosspool football club was featured as the TV programme looked at a mid-Victorian jug that turns out to probably be the oldest football trophy in the world. It is also known as the Youdan Cup.

Club historian Phil Farnsworth explained more about the 1866 trophy – and found out that its £50,000 insurance is not enough to cover the cup’s real value.

51 bus route could change as part of university improvements

Proposed improvements to the University of Sheffield campus could see the city-bound 51 bus rerouted from Western Bank/Mappin Street to Glossop Road via Clarkson Street and Durham Road.

The change would allow for the pedestrianisation of part of Leavygreave Road and a possible one-way circulatory system to be put in place using Western Bank for outbound and Glossop Road for inbound traffic.

Other ideas that are part of the new proposals include installing pedestrian crossings on Western Bank and improving Mappin Street.

The University is asking for residents to feed back on the masterplan at upcoming events or using their online form.

Earlier today Crosspool Forum hosted a Special Open Meeting at St Columba’s to discuss recent vandalism to local allotments.

Fifty three allotment tenants from Marsh Lane, Hagg Lane, Rosco Bank and Rivelin attended with a view to discussing how to prevent such problems in the future.

Marsh Lane allotment-holders seek building materials: special Open Meeting arranged

As allotment holders appeal for spare materials to help them rebuild the Marsh Lane allotments cafe, tool store and site toilet, a special Open Meeting has been arranged to discuss the problem of Crosspool allotment vandalism.

The 25 August fire came just a few days after a blaze at Hagg Lane allotments on 14 August.

The council have supplied a skip to Marsh Lane allotments and a group of gardener volunteers have been working to clear the site.

One plot belonging to allotment holder Jeff Walker was left devastated but thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor Jeff should be in a position to replace the shed with something more substantial and possibly fire resistant.

Marsh Lane allotment holders are now in desperate need for any timber, glass, concrete, breeze blocks, slabs and other building material to help rebuild their buildings. They’re particularly looking for support from local building yards and glass merchants.

Meanwhile, local councillors, council officers, and our local police officers, in their determination to end the current blight of vandalism at local allotments, have arranged for an emergency Open Meeting to be held at St Columba’s Church Hall, Friday 5 September at 10am. Everyone is welcome.

Arson attack and more break-ins on Crosspool allotments

Volunteers have been left devastated following an arson attack on Hagg Lane allotment hut.

The main building was set alight on Thursday 14 August at around 11pm. The fire brigade was called and the fire put out but not before serious damage had been done to both the building and stock.

In addition there were some more break-ins to individual huts.

Hagg Lane & District Gardeners’ Allotments Society would like to say thank you for the over 50 emails of support since the fire and the help they’ve had clearing up.
