Carver Fields under threat?

It’s our understanding that a decision has been taken to sell the Carver fields on Hagg Lane.

These fields have provided a healthy recreational facility for everyone for many years. If this proves to be the case, and the fields become a building site, this would be a significant loss to the community and to our heritage.

We’ll let you know if we hear more on this.

Please help keep Clough Field free of dog mess

This is a heartfelt reminder to dog walkers, who use Clough Field and other open spaces used by local children.

Please remember, in the interest of our children’s health, to clear up your dog’s mess by placing it safely into a biodegradable bag, and putting it into a special dog litter bin. If you cannot find a dog bin, then double wrap the dog bag and place it in a normal litter bin. Having no bags is not an excuse for failing to protect our children’s health and wellbeing.

Dog mess is a public nuisance, an eyesore and a threat to health. If you take a dog out (on or off the lead), (with the exception of being registered blind), you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog messes in a public place, even if you are not the owner. If your dog goes out on its own and makes a mess, you’re still responsible – ignorance is not an excuse.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Hagg Lane allotments: potatoes, seeds and coffee morning for would-be growers

Hagg Lane Allotment Society is holding an open morning on Sunday 31 January to celebrate the new growing season and the arrival of this year’s seed potatoes.

Coffee and cake will be available between 9.30am and 12.30pm, and more than 20 different varieties of potatoes will be available from £1 a bag.

Potatoes can be grown in containers on a sunny patio and new potatoes can be ready to harvest from 10 weeks after planting, weather conditions permitting.

The Allotment Society Hut, on Back Lane, also stocks vegetable and flower seeds, compost and other gardening products, and is now open on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 9.30am.

The litter bins in Crosspool precinct will now be emptied twice a day rather than once.

This is a result of feedback to Crosspool Forum and action from Councillor Geoff Smith who contacted the Street Cleaning Manager to request the change.

Rivelin Valley Road trees could be chopped down

Thirty one trees along Rivelin Valley Road could be removed as part of the Streets Ahead road improvement project.

According to the Sheffield Telegraph, contractor Amey says three trees are either dead, decayed, have structural integrity problems or are causing surface damage.

Residents are campaigning against the proposals.

A Streets Ahead roadshow is due to visit Stephen Hill church on Tuesday 24 November, 4-7pm.

Lydgate Lane trees earmarked for felling

200-year-old trees on Lydgate Lane are scheduled to be cut down as part of the Streets Ahead project.

Notices have been placed by Amey/Streets Ahead on three trees stating they have developed a structural fault and are to be felled within two weeks – possibly on Wednesday 28 October – as part of the city-wide programme to improve Sheffield’s roads.

Campaigners have organised an emergency meeting at 5pm Sunday 25 October in The Sportsman pub on Benty Lane – anyone with an interest in the fate of these trees is invited. Dave Dillner from Sheffield Tree Action Group will be attending. A petition to save the trees is also available for signing in Enhance Hair Salon.

Anyone wanting to express their views on the proposals to representatives from Amey and local councillors will also have the opportunity to do so at the next Crosspool Forum Open Meeting/AGM on 29 October at St Columba’s Church, 7pm start.

You can also contact Amey/Streets ahead directly.
