There’s a meeting tonight (Tuesday 7 May 2013) to discuss the future of community assemblies at Ecclesall Parish Halls, 7.30-9.30pm. Information from the South West Community Assembly is below.

Drop-in event

There is another chance to talk to Council Officers at a drop in event on 20 May 2013 between 10:00am and 4:00pm at St Mary’s Community Centre, Bramall Lane, Sheffield S2 4QZ. Just turn up, view the comments on the proposals so far and tell us what you think.

Poll: would you like additional recycling facilities for plastics in Crosspool?

Plastics recycling bin — Would you like additional recycling facilities for plastics in Crosspool?

With the current system, the only plastics that you can recycle in Crosspool are plastic bottles. This can be done via your blue box/blue bin.

If you want to recycle other types plastic then the nearest sites are a drive away on Old Fulwood Road in Fulwood and in the University of Sheffield’s Endcliffe Crescent Flats complex.

Crosspool Forum is exploring the suggestion of having a plastics recycling bin in Crosspool. If the idea is popular then this is something we’ll raise with our local councillors.

Your views wanted on the future of our Community Assemblies – deadline Monday

The council is consulting on the future of Community Assemblies. Four main proposals are on the table in response to cuts in government funding and a reduction in services.

Crosspool is part of South West Community Assembly. Community Assemblies currently help decide how services in Sheffield are delivered. The idea is that many decisions that were made in the town hall – including how to spend a Community Assembly budget – are now made within communities via assemblies.

The deadline for responding to the proposals with your comments is tomorrow, Monday 28 January 2013.

You can also telephone 0114 273 5299 to give your opinion, or complete a questionnaire over the phone with a member of staff.

New 51 bus timetable starts today

New timetables for the 51 bus start today

A new timetable for the 51 bus service starts today as part of a package of improvements to Sheffield’s bus network.

Passengers have been told that the new timetable for the Crosspool service will be more resilient, with longer journey times to reflect delays and greater recovery time at Lodge Moor before departure on the next journey.

In June, First admitted the 51 service fell short on punctuality. The new timetable was designed in response.

At Thursday’s Crosspool Forum AGM/Open Meeting, local councillors Geoff Smith and Rob Frost pledged to meet with SYPTE and First if the expected improvements to the Crosspool service do not happen.

As well the new 51 timetable, other changes being made to the bus network in an attempt to simplify and improve the overall service. These include co-ordinated timetables that change less often, a new range of tickets, more services on some routes and more buses with low-floor access.

Work has now started on improving Sheffield’s roads and pavements as part of Streets Ahead.

You can find out more about the project, and get answers to any questions you may have, at Wesley Hall Methodist Church in Crookes on Wednesday 31 October 2012 between 2 and 5pm.

This event has been designed with older people in mind. Transport is available, so give them a ring on 0114 203 7212 and they’ll organise for you to be picked up and dropped home again.

Hopes for 51 bus service to improve with new timetable

Bus 51: revised route and new ticketing proposed — 51 bus: a more reliable service?

Bus operator First is expecting Crosspool’s bus service to improve with the introduction of a more resilient timetable from 28 October.

In June, First admitted the 51 service fell short on punctuality. A more resilient new timetable has been designed in response.

A First spokesperson said:

“The new timetable will be much more resilient, incorporating longer journey times to reflect delays and greater recovery time at Lodge Moor before departure on the next journey. More buses and drivers will be required to operate it but deployed to maintain the present level of service where we’re falling short.”

Another expected output from the Sheffield Bus Partnership consultation was that the 51 route would change, with the bus would going via West Street instead of Broad Lane and the drop-in medical centre on Rockingham Street. It doesn’t appear that this change has been implemented in the new timetable.

A new citywide ticket which can be used on all bus and tram services in Sheffield will also be introduced on 28 October.

Local reservoir sites earmarked for new housing: update

Earlier this year local people had real concerns about proposals to allocate green field sites in the Crookes area for new housing. Two of the sites mentioned were Hadfield Reservoir (behind School Road) and Lydgate Reservoir (off Evelyn Road).

The council has now dropped plans to use the Hadfield site for new houses but the Lydgate site has not been ruled out and remains under consideration. Yorkshire Water has confirmed that they are “undertaking further investigations” at the Lydgate site.

However the council has said in a statement that “to provide advice on the archaeological value and ecological value of the site, an ecological assessment and a desk based archaeological assessment is being carried out.”

Although the council hasn’t made up its mind yet, ostensibly the usually purpose of investigations like these are to see whether a site is suitable for development.

Local residents are concerned at the prospect of losing yet another green and open space and worried about the possible knock-on effect new housing will have on traffic, road safety and local schools.

Library services: Crosspool residents asked to give their views

Crosspool mobile library: the service is to be cut — Local library services could be cut further

Sheffield residents are being asked to give their opinion on local library services ahead of the council’s plan to make savings in this area.

Interim Director of Community Services Jan Fitzgerald has indicated that some services could change due to the amount of money that needs to be saved.

She said: “Some of the savings will have to come from our library services. Whilst trying to protect frontline services, we cannot guarantee that they will be untouched given the scale of the savings which will be required.”

You can give your views at www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraryreview or via a paper form which can be picked up at at any library or First Point. The consultation runs until 8 October.

Crosspool is currently served by two mobile library services and the nearest local lending library is in Broomhill.

Your views wanted on changes to 51 bus

There are a couple of days left to submit your views on the changes to Sheffield’s bus network.

As part of the proposals, the 51 bus could go via West Street instead of Broad Lane to improve its reliability.

Changes to ticketing arrangements are also on the table including a single ticket to let you to travel anywhere across the city, even if you have to change buses. The cost of a day ticket would also come down by 70p to £4.30.

The Sheffield Bus Partnership is consulting on the proposals and the public have until 14 July to give their feedback. Any changes would come in at the end of October 2012.
