Former Tapton student Matthew Fitzpatrick is bringing the US Amateur Championship title back to England for the first time in 102 years.
Matthew’s victory this weekend in Brookline, Massachusetts sees him join an illustrious list of former winners of the trophy including names such as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. Harold Hilton was the last English winner of the tournament back in 1911.
18-year-old Matthew has just completed his A levels in geography, history and PE at Tapton school in Crosspool. He’ll now join Northwestern University in September for four years where he’ll be taught by Pat Goss, one of the best-regarded golf coaches in the US.
His victory in the US Amateur Championship also means he’ll play in the US Masters and US Open next year.
In July Matthew won silver at The Open at Muirfield.

A former Tapton school pupil is appearing in a production at the Crucible theatre in July.
Jess Millward will appear in Babe the Sheep-Pig, a play based on the popular film and book, Babe by Dick King-Smith, on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 of July.
It is the opening production of the Sheffield Children’s Festival 2012 and is also this years BTEC Extended Diploma in Acting at Norton College and so the students will be performing various roles, including Ma the sheep, Farmer Hogget and, of course, Babe.
The play tells the tale of a courageous piglet’s remarkable adventure. After Babe is won by Farmer Hogget, they form an unbreakable bond, and with the help of the old sheep-dog, Fly, she soon learns the herding instinct. When the day of the Grand Challenge Sheep-Dog Trials arrives, the whole farm holds its breath to see whether Babe will triumph, against all odds, to become the hero of the farm.
Jess, a former pupil of Tapton School, will be playing the role of Ma the sheep on Monday 2 and involved in the ensemble on Tuesday 3. She is also involved in the costume side of the production. Jess first started acting in the well known Stephen Hill pantomime.
Tickets are available at the Sheffield Theatre’s Box Office (0114 249 6000) or on their website and are priced at £6 for adults and £4 for students/concessions.

Newly-formed rugby union club Hallamshire RUFC is running an Easter rugby camp on 2-3 April on Tapton school playing fields. It is aimed at children between 6 and 14 years old from the surrounding areas.
Organiser Matt Akers said: “Our aim is to give a fun day based around rugby union and promote enjoyment within the game. If any youngsters are then interested we hope to offer them a chance to play through our newly set up youth system.”
The RFU is backing the day and are offering local community coaches to assist in the day’s events. The club’s members are CRB-cleared and have coaching badges.
