Lydgate Lane to close for a month

Lydgate Lane is to close between Crookes Road and Ryegate Crescent from Monday 9 May for essential water mains work.

The road is due to reopen on 7 June 2011. If you have queries then the helpline for contractors Balfour Beatty is 0800 121 4444.

The bottom section of Lydgate Lane, around the Grindstone is already closed, with a diversion running via Nairn Street and Bute Street.

Last summer, Manchester Road and Glossop Road closed for the replacement of gas mains, but they reopened nearly a month early as the work took less time than originally anticipated.

Dransfield Road street lights could take 30 days to repair

On Saturday 23 April, the Dransfield Road street lights failed to come on.

Street Force were informed and have now got back in touch today to say that the fault is with the underground cable and it could take up to 30 days to repair:

The problem with the street light son Dransfield Road is now caused by a fault on the underground cable network owned and operated by Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Ltd. (YEDL) and has been passed to them. They were notified of the fault (Ref: 261958) yesterday.

YEDL work to repair faults within 30 working days of them receiving notification, however, their priority is to maintain the supply to housing, which in some cases, may mean that street lighting faults take slightly longer to resolve.

Contact will be made with YEDL to try and speed up the investigation and repair of the fault.

In the meantime, drivers and pedestrians are advised to take extra care on Dransfield Road after dark.

Crosspool schools in ice cream van row

The council’s licensing board meets today to discuss concerns from Tapton and King Edward VII lower school teachers regarding the safety of pupils as they are drawn onto Darwin Lane at busy times in order to buy from the ice cream van.

In January, a boy was hit crossing the road to reach the van. Ice cream man Chris Turner has been trading on the site since May 1971.

Submit a transport service request to Sheffield City Council

Sheffield city council is inviting suggestions for how to improve traffic flow, road safety or change facilities for road/pavement users in the city.

Crosspool residents can go to www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads/report/transport-service-requests to register requests, or alternatively you can call the council on 0114 273 5907.

All the requests will be considered and acknowledged within seven days, and the assessment will generally be undertaken within around three to four months. Information regarding the outcome will be announced when the Community Assembly has made a decision.

Grass verge protection measures installed in Crosspool

Two sets of wooden bollards have been installed in response to concerns over damage to grass verges by vehicles.

A set of four of the bollards are located on Marsh Lane at its junction with Lydgate Lane, and a further four are adjacent to 42/46 Tapton Hill Road. They are funded by the South West Community Assembly.

The bollards prevent vehicles from mounting the grass verge areas between the pavement and the road. Their arrival follows requests from local residents worried about erosion.

Man accidentally drives car into Sportsman pub

A driver accidentally drove his new Mercedes into a Crosspool pub last week.

After enjoying a meal at The Sportsman on Thursday 3 February, the man left the premises at around 6pm to drive home in the car he’d collected earlier that day from the motor dealer.

Apparently being unacquainted with the layout of the vehicle, he inadvertently engaged forward drive, rather than reverse, and shot forward through the walled bay window, causing extensive damage to the front of the building .

Fortunately no one was sitting near the window at the time, and the driver walked away shaken but uninjured.

The bay window adjacent to the disabled parking spaces at the front of the pub is now boarded up on both the outside and inside.

Manchester Road electronic speed signs return

This week the speed indication displays returned to Manchester Road.

As well as showing drivers how fast they are going, the signs also display a happy face for vehicles travelling under the speed limit and a sad face for those exceeding it.

The idea is that they slow cars down by making drivers aware when they are driving at unsafe speeds. The speed limit for this stretch of road is 30mph.

Two speed indication displays were installed in a similar location last summer for a few weeks. We’ll report back anything we hear about the data collected.

Consultation on Broomhill Crookes Road junction changes

Local residents are being consulted on two options to make it easier to cross the road in Broomhill at the Crookes Road/Fulwood Road/Nile Street/Whitham Road junction.

One proposal would see vehicles banned from turning left from Fulwood Road into Crookes Road and an extra crossing inserted on Fulwood Road between the benches outside Cream coffee shop and Help the Aged:

The other option includes a slip road from Fulwood Road up to Crookes Road and would result in the loss of two parking spaces from the adjacent shopping parade.

Any changes will be of interest to readers of this website as they could indirectly affect the flow of traffic on both Lydgate Lane and also Manchester Road, two of the key routes up to Crosspool.

A Sheffield Star article says that members of Broomhill Forum have indicated a preference for the second option but final judgement is being reserved until more views are known.

Sandygate Road pedestrian crossing plea rejected

A request to install traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing at the Sandygate Road/Coldwell Lane/Carsick Hill Road junction is set to be rejected by Sheffield City Council.

Highways officers investigated the feasibility of a scheme but concluded that there were other sites in the South West Community Assembly area with a higher number of accidents where money would be better spent.
