Tapton students honored with Diana Award

This week eight students from Crosspool’s Tapton School received a Diana Award for an initiative which has provided a safe haven for young people from homophobic and transphobic bullying.

Rosie, Sara, Catherine, Ruairidh, Molly, Oliver, Imogen and Aleksandra, all aged 17, are the Tapton Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Straight Alliance (LGBTSA), nominated by SAYiT in Sheffield.

The group formed an alliance for the protection of young people at their school who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. As well as being a support network, LGBTSA has helped develop the way in which their school can provide a safe and happy learning environment for students.

LGBTSA has also inspired students from other schools who learned of their campaigning success to establish their own alliances.

The Diana Award is a lifetime award set up in memory of Princess Diana and today has the support of her sons The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry and the Prime Minister as Patron.

It celebrates young people who have had a monumental impact on the lives of others – whether they’re a volunteer, fundraiser, young carer, campaigner or anti-bullying mentor – they all share a deep sense of social responsibility.

Several Crosspool roads will be gritted this winter following the results of a public consultation into winter road maintenance.

Council chiefs have changed their mind on the gritting of 141 roads. Local streets including Hagg Hill, Coldwell Lane, Stephen Hill, Watt Lane, Back Lane and Bole Hill Road will now be included on gritting routes.

Road resurfacing work continues from 14 July in Sandygate

Watt Lane: to be resurfaced as part of the Streets Ahead project

Work to resurface roads, replace pavements and install new streetlights is due to start on Crosspool streets in the Sandygate district.

Roads in what contractor Amey is calling zone B45 include Watt Lane, Selborne Road, Cairns Road, Cardoness Road and Drive, Dransfield Road and Close and Barholm Road.

Two separate road closures are scheduled for the second half of July. Cars parked on closed roads may be towed away, with a fee due to have your vehicle released.

Residents living in affected roads should have received letters confirming the details – read a copy here (PDF, 71KB).

Crosspool roads will not be gritted under new council proposals

Several roads in Crosspool are included in a list of streets that will no longer be gritted if new proposals come into force in October.

The Sheffield City Council winter road maintenance proposals affect 100 miles of road in the city and have come about due to cuts in funding from central government.

Affected local streets include Hagg Hill, Coldwell Lane, Stephen Hill, Watt Lane and Back Lane. You can see these streets highlighted on the council’s interactive online map.

Residents are being invited to give their views on the proposals. You have until Friday 25 July 2014 to comment.

On Friday night over 60 residents gathered at St. Columba’s church to put their questions to representatives from First, provider of Crosspool’s 51 bus service.

Almost 30 questions were taken from the floor and answered by First’s commercial manager Adam Timewell and business manager John Eardley.

Issues and comments that were covered include:

  • the impact of the tramline repairs and Charnock roadworks on the service
  • changes can be expected in September, including a full fleet of new double decker buses on the 51 route; exploring the possibility of splitting the route so buses from this end turn round at the markets then come back; improving punctuality with particular problems regarding accessibility on West Street (outbound);
  • concerns about the safety of passengers boarding the bus on Mappin Street
  • a named Route Manager for the 51 is to be introduced by the spring
  • attempts to solve the problem of bunching buses, which is acknowledged as a management rather than timetabling issue
  • whether other companies could also run buses on the route, like the 52 service

Adam and John have agreed to attend the next Crosspool Forum Open Meeting on 31 July to report back on their progress.

The next Crosspool Community Skip is on Saturday 5 April 2014

You are invited to come and leave your household waste in the Crosspool Community Skip for free on Saturday 5 April 2014. It will be in the car park of The Sportsman pub on Benty Lane from 8am and will be picked up promptly at 12:30pm 11.30am.

Please note, the skip is for household waste only. The following items will not be accepted:

  • fridges
  • freezers
  • gas bottles
  • asbestos
  • oil
  • car batteries
  • tyres
  • TVs
  • computers

The skip will be supervised at all times.

Crosspool’s James Woods due to compete in Winter Olympics on Thursday

Local freeskier James Woods will compete in Thursday morning’s Freestyle Skiing Men’s Ski Slopestyle event at the Winter Olympics.

There was concern on Friday after Woodsy picked up a hip injury and missed training earlier this week, but he is expected to take part on Thursday.

Qualification starts at 6:15am, with the final at 9:30am.
