Countdown to Crosspool Summer Fayre on Saturday 5 July 2014

Crosspool’s big Summer Fayre at CDYST on Coldwell Lane will take place this Saturday.

BBC sports broadcaster and Crosspool resident Damian Johnson will be opening the fayre at 1pm. A range of activities are being planned, including:

  • Coconut shy
  • Lucky dip
  • Tombola
  • Wellie wanging
  • Wet sponge throwing

  • Books
  • Plants
  • Bric-a-brac

Entrance is 50p on the gate.

RuggerEds will be running introductory sessions at the fayre, where your child can learn from qualified coaches and take part in a mini tag rugby taster and have the opportunity to kick a penalty. On completion of the taster session each child will be presented with a certificate and voucher for a free future session as well as a leaflet giving you more information.

Meet Abbeydale Brewery at The Sportsman – plus other fundraising events this week

Sheffield’s Abbeydale Brewery is a featured brewery at Thursday’s Meet the Brewer night at The Sportsman in Crosspool, one of a series of fundraising events this week.

Other brewers that you’ll be able to chat to about their beer at the event include Black Sheep, Timothy Taylor’s and Marston’s.

For £5 you get two pints of your choosing and pie and peas supper. The event starts at 7pm and all proceeds go to Crosspool Forum.

Final preparations are underway for Crosspool’s annual Selborne Road street market on Sunday 29 June.

The event is your opportunity to buy local food, cakes, plants, crafts, jewellery, clothes and books from over 40 stalls and also enjoy music and dance from Jacapella, Lydgate First
School, Tapton School’s wind band and an Irish dance troupe.

Many of our local shops will also open up for the day. Direct Travel is hosting a travel market and family fun day with free face painting and goody bags.

During the market, Crosspool Art Group will be exhibiting in the garden at 55 Selborne Road where tea and picnic facilities will also be available.

Last year, even the deputy prime minister popped by.

Crosspool Street market is 12-4pm and is part of Crosspool Festival 2014.

The coordinators of this year’s Crosspool well dressing are asking for your help.

If you’ve ever wondered how a well is dressed and would like to help dress the Crosspool well with flower petals and seeds, or just come and watch, drop-in to the Stephen Hill Methodist Church (Benty Lane Entrance) from 9:30am onwards on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week.

Crosspool Open Gardens is a chance for you to explore some of the wonderful gardens in our community, get to know your neighbours over a cuppa and cake and raise some money for charity.

Tickets for this year’s event on Saturday 28 June are on sale at Lounge@Crosspool all week and at Crosspool Pets on the day. They cost £4 – children go free.

There are lots of new gardens to explore this year. Refreshments available in nearly all the gardens including Holly Hagg.

Also be aware that some roads may be closed to cars for resurfacing such as Sandygate Park Road on the day, so please park at the top or the bottom and walk to the gardens there.

Who knows, you might be inspired to share your garden next year!

Crosspool Festival 2014

Stalls available at Lydgfest on 28 June

Lydgate Infant School’s BBQ – or Lydgfest as it has come to be known – is being held at the infant school on Saturday 28 June.

The organisers have space available for crafters, bakers, and jewellery makers etc to sell their wares. The cost is £15 per pitch and either a donation or raffle prize.

They point out that a large portion of your prospective customers will be children, so take this into account when stocking your stall and setting prices.

Historic Hallam Chase fell race returns to Crosspool tonight

This evening sees the historic Hallam Chase return to Crosspool, an annual fell race organised by Hallamshire Harriers and hosted by Hallam Cricket Club.

At 8pm on the Tuesday evening after the second bank holiday in May, runners set off from Hallam football/cricket club’s Sandygate ground, go down Den Bank through the Rivelin Valley and up to Stannington church, before returning by the same route. The run 3¼ miles long, with 800 feet of climb.

In 2013 John Alexander took first prize. The record time of 19 minutes 42 seconds was set in 1968 by Trevor Wright.

Details of events for this year’s Crosspool Festival are now available.

The 2014 festival runs from Friday 27 June to Sunday 6 July.

You can now browse the programme online (PDF, 711KB). The theme is ‘Active Crosspool’ and you’ll see there are plenty of events for everyone to get involved in.

Crosspool Forum members have chosen PACT, and the CDYST Playground appeal to be the charities this year. Any surplus generated will be donated to them.

Tickets for events including the Salsa Night, the African Drumming Workshop and Folk Night are available in June from Lounge@Crosspool, 20 Sandygate Road (0114 266 7339).
