Developer seeks planning permission after the fact

The planning application with reference 24/00772/FUL appears to be a response to concerns raised by neighbours regarding the unauthorised replacement of traditional bay windows with the installation of flat windows and French doors to a property on Manchester Road in Crosspool. This application was officially received and validated on the 12th of March, 2024. Those interested or affected by this application can submit their comments to the local planning authority for consideration

Altering windows and doors can significantly change the appearance and character of a property and in many cases, the insertion of new windows and doors, that are of a similar appearance to those used in the original construction of the house, generally don’t require planning permission. However, if the changes are made without the necessary permissions, the local planning authority may take legally binding enforcement action for the reversal of the changes.

Fly-Tipping Fines Increased

In light of the recent statutory changes implemented by the government, councils now possess the authority to impose increased fines. This development reflects a significant shift in regulatory powers, enabling local councils to more effectively enforce rules and regulations. The enhanced fining capability is anticipated to act as a deterrent against infringements and support the maintenance of community standards.

To effectively combat the widespread problems of fly-tipping and litter, local authorities are now contemplating the introduction of steeper fines. These initiatives are designed to dissuade individuals from unlawfully disposing of waste, thereby ensuring public spaces remain clean and safe for everyone.

In response to the grievances expressed by residents, weary of the constant fly-tipping and litter in their neighbourhoods, councillors at a recent Sheffield City Council budget meeting put forward a proposal to impose harsher penalties for such environmental offences. This included the introduction of new fines and increased enforcement action across the city. The proposal was accepted by a majority of councillors.

The new fines for fly tipping will rise to £1000 (up £600) and the penalty for littering is doubled to £160 (up £80). These new fines are expected to raise an additional £100k per year which will be channelled into enforcement services.

Crosspool Beauty Therapist exemplifies resilience and determination

Support local athlete Suzy Kerfoot on her Just Giving page as she prepares to represent Great Britain on the world stage.

You may recall that in August last year Suzy Kerfoot, a 45-year-old Crosspool beauty therapist who had turned her back on gymnastics at the age of 15, made an incredible return to the sport and clinched gold in the over-45s category at the Adult Gymnastics British Championships.

Her remarkable achievement didn’t stop there—Suzy has now been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2024 Masters Gymnastics World Cup in Boston Massachusetts USA, which is scheduled for June. For Suzy, this opportunity is “beyond what I ever expected or dreamed.” She expressed her joy at being part of the team and competing against other countries in an international competition for the first time.

Suzy Kerfoot’s journey exemplifies resilience and determination, and her return to gymnastics after more than 25 years is a testament to believing in oneself and pursuing dreams regardless of age!

Winning the British championships did not give Suzy automatic selection into the team. Since last August Suzy has been training hard and thankfully it paid off.
The British team is made up of Gymnastics in the 30s 40s 50s and 60s categories.  Suzy will be representing the 40s on all four pieces and also competing for her own individual title. This will give Suzy her position in the world!

Adult gymnasts are not considered part of the “elite” category by British Gymnastics but are still expected to fund various expenses themselves. These expenses include purchasing their Great Britain tracksuit and leotard, paying competition fees, booking flights and accommodation, and managing all other associated costs.

The Crosspool Forum, a group of volunteers who care about the quality of life in their community, publishes the Crosspool Clarion every quarter. The Clarion reaches more than 3000 homes and features news and events that are relevant to the local residents. Some of the recent news includes; Spotlighting Shearers, local Policing, and the Devastating Blow to the Rivelin Valley.

We are always looking for stories that reflect the diversity and interests of our readers. The Sheffield Astronomical Society

If you are fascinated by the wonders of the night sky and want to learn more about astronomy and space sciences, you might be interested in joining the Sheffield Astronomical Society. This is a group of amateur enthusiasts who share their passion and knowledge with the public in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire area. They organise regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, at the Ranmoor Parish Centre – 5 Ranmoor Park Road, Sheffield S10 3GX – at 7:30pm.

At their first meeting of the month, a guest speaker is invited to share their expertise on a specific astronomy topic, usually from Sheffield University. However, thanks to Zoom, they have also hosted speakers from New Zealand and Stockholm in the past. The second meeting of the month is designed for beginners who want to learn more about astronomy. The first part of this meeting is a presentation by one of the society members on a relevant topic. After a short break, the meeting resumes with updates on current space missions, tips on what to observe in the night sky in the coming month, and any other astronomy news items.

The group aims to organize free monthly public sessions, where they showcase their telescopes and share their passion for astronomy. Depending on the season, they either observe the stars and planets at night or use special devices to safely watch the Sun during the day.
