Broomhill Temporary Changes to Roads and Foot-ways

Keeping people safe and socially distanced

To enable pedestrians to maintain the correct social distance between themselves and others, the council will be making temporary changes to the road and footway layout on Fulwood Road and Glossop Road in Broomhill. This will provide additional space on the pavement for pedestrians as they access local amenities.

The parking area outside Morrisions, Sainsbury’s etc will also be temporarily pedestrianised to allow more space for people to maintain social distancing. This means that the parking bays will be temporarily suspended. The area will remain open for two disabled parking bays, with the addition of two further disabled bays on Spooner Road and Taptonville Road.

Alternative parking is available very close by. This includes the car park above the shops/businesses on Fulwood Road (accessed via Spooner Road) and in Spooner Road Car Park.

The footways on Glossop Road, between Fulwood Road and Peel Street and between Peel Street and the end of the pavement opposite Westbourne Road, will be temporarily extended by 1.5metres to give additional footway space

Timescales

Monday 3 August – 2 new disabled bays will be marked out on Taptonville Road and Spooner Road. This will be operational by or before 8 August.

Sunday 9 August – Footpath widening on Glossop Road will commence. This will be operational by or before 16 August.

Monday 17 August – Parking bays on Fulwood Road will be closed. Fencing will be erected to prevent access to the work area. Access to the shops will be retained with no disruption.

Monday 24 August – Working arrangements will require access to the footway in front of the shops and there will be some disruption. Access arrangements will be worked up in more detail once on site.

Saturday 29 August – Works complete.

Another Piece of History is set to Disappear

Plough Inn Sandygate Road

Planning officers are recommending that the application to demolish the Plough Inn, Sandygate Road is approved; we are calling on our elected councillors to overturn that decision. Please let your local councillor know, before next Tuesday, August 4th, that our community is opposed to the loss of this landmark building.

Please see below contact details for our local councillors

tim.huggan@councillor.sheffield.gov.uk

mohammed.mahroof@councillor.sheffiled.gov.uk

anne.murphy@councillor.sheffield.gov.uk

The report from planning officers states that the condition of the building is not due to poor management or neglect by the owner but is due to break-ins and vandalism, but  there was no mention of the Enforcement Notice issued by the City Council!

The report states that the £50,000 rent for the pub as advertised by the owner was ‘reasonable’ but states that the majority of other comparable pubs were offered at ‘significantly less’.

The report states that there are two other pubs within 800m of the Plough but acknowledges that the Cherry Tree was saved even though there were pubs within 800m because the area around the Cherry Tree is ‘hilly’
It seems that Crosspool is not ‘hilly’

These are just some of the inconsistencies in the officers’ report.

The report will be considered by the Planning Committee next Tuesday, August 4th at 2 p.m. This is a virtual meeting that can view via a Webcast. You can find details here:

This is an artist impression of what is proposed to replace The Plough, if the planning officers recommendation is approved by councillors at next week’s meeting.

Flower Planters Removed

Flower planters removed from Broomhill shopping centre to make way for ‘social distancing’

Broomhill shopping centre

The community of Broomhill were confused and flabbergasted to find that their lovely floral display planters, regularly tended by local residents, has been removed and replaced with squares of Tarmac.

Apparently, the Planters in the Broomhill shopping Centre had been moved to help create more space for pedestrians to safely social distance and as part of the council’s work to create safe active travel routes around the city.

Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability at Sheffield City Council, explains why the planters have been moved:

“As we move into the next phase of lockdown and people start to move around their communities more frequently, it is essential that we create the space needed to allow safe social distancing.

“Fulwood Road was identified as one location where extra space could be created to give people an alternative route to the row of shops, which could become congested. “In the first stage of works to create a footpath, planters blocking this pedestrian route have been temporarily moved to Division Street, where they will form part of the road closure in place to encourage active travel in the city centre. The parking meter and sign on the same footpath will also be moved so that the path is unobstructed.

“As the initial temporary road closure measures on Division Street are upgraded, the planters will be reinstated into Broomhill Centre ensuring that space for social distancing can be maintained.”

Applause for Frontline Workers

Applause for Frontline Workers Tonight at 8pm

giphy clap2Over the past eight weeks, there have been many ways that we have shown our appreciation and gratitude to thank all the brave front line NHS key workers for their exceptional dedication during these unprecedented times.

Tonight at the dedicated time of 8pm, whilst continuing to show our support in the usual way, with a huge round of applause from our front doors, balconies, windows, and living rooms; let us give a thought for the wellbeing of the front line local authority staff who, during the COVID19 pandemic, have continued to function and carry out their very important roles and manage the increasing need for their services and information whilst dealing with their own personal situations and emotions.

BONFIRES

SCCDuring Covid-19 more people are at home than usual, either working, home-schooling or self-isolating. The Sheffield City Council are strongly discouraging bonfires of any type during this period, as it can significantly impact on people’s health and enjoyment of their property.

If Sheffield City Council gather evidence of bonfires that are causing a nuisance to neighbouring properties they will take enforcement action that could lead to a fine or prosecution under criminal law.

Sheffield City council waste collection services are currently operating as normal, including garden waste with new registrations to the green bins still available, so there is no reason for anyone to be burning waste.

Garden Fires -Take the Pledge

SYFS

Take the pledge – no bonfires during the pandemic

Firefighters across South Yorkshire are asking people to pledge not to have a garden fire during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic

This latest plea comes as South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue saw a huge spike in garden fires during the last week in March, – a 161 percent increase compared to a normal week

The service has also been contacted by a number of residents who have found it hard to physically leave their homes to exercise, due to the smoke coming from local garden fires where people have been burning garden and household waste.

Their message is also being backed by local authorities across the county, with an increase in air pollution being shown to negatively affect the health of those with respiratory illnesses.SYFR_Garden_Fire_Facebook_Facebook-773x296

To sign the pledge, visit http://www.syfire.gov.uk/pledge.

In pledging not to have a garden fire during the on-going pandemic, you will be supporting your firefighters and people with respiratory illnesses. Every pledge makes a difference.
