Crosspool petrol station: to be demolished and replaced with a retail development?
An application to demolish Crosspool’s Jet petrol station and replace it with a retail development has been recommended for conditional approval by planning officers.
You can read the report (PDF, 2MB) on the council website. The relevant section is on page 208 of the PDF document, which is labelled page 228..
The report states: “The principle of the development is acceptable because small retail stores are acceptable in housing areas and the applicant has demonstrated that there would be no harm to the existing neighbourhood centre and that there are no better alternative sites.”
The committee is a public meeting so you can attend and make representations to the committee if you so wish. The meeting starts at 2pm and if you do want to speak you should arrive before 2pm and let the committee clerk know of your intention.
The developers of Moor View Farm have been granted planning permission to demolish the out buildings and to build five detached and two semi-detached houses on the site.
The farmhouse refurbishment is well on its way to completion and the out buildings have now been demolished. The builders are presently awaiting the outcome of water and mine survey before work on the properties can begin.
As part of the scheme, local organisations can apply for a share of £13,000 to help fund projects that benefit the community.
The planning applications for the project were:
14/02155/FUL for the building of houses on the lower part of the site
14/02232/FUL for the upper part of the site to replace the dilapidated barns with two dwellings
14/01368/FUL to add an extension to the existing farmhouse
The newly laid surface of Watt Lane has been under cut by a leaking water main at the junction with Cairns Road, resulting in the appearance of a pot hole.
Amey have been informed and the pot hole has been fenced off.
Broomhill Community Library will be celebrating National Library Day on Saturday 7 February 2015 with a series of events based around ‘The Story of our Local Community between 1850 and 1950’.

The Victorian Visitors will be around dressed in costume – so children are invited to come along dressed in their favourite book characters (there will be prizes!) For children too, local author and illustrator Lydia Monks will be reading and drawing at 2pm and there will be brass coin rubbing, plate doilie making and possibly a treasure hunt.
You can also expect to see displays of life from Victorian times to the 1950s with items to handle and buy – coins, donated books and baked items – from Victorian to Elizabethan recipes. All proceeds will help keep Broomhill Community Library open.

The 51 bus could be rerouted as part of the University of Sheffield’s Campus Masterplan
Proposed improvements to the University of Sheffield campus could see the city-bound 51 bus rerouted from Western Bank/Mappin Street to Glossop Road via Clarkson Street and Durham Road.
The change would allow for the pedestrianisation of part of Leavygreave Road and a possible one-way circulatory system to be put in place using Western Bank for outbound and Glossop Road for inbound traffic.
Other ideas that are part of the new proposals include installing pedestrian crossings on Western Bank and improving Mappin Street.
The University is asking for residents to feed back on the masterplan at upcoming events or using their online form.
Damage caused by the recent arson at Hagg Lane & District Gardeners’ Allotments Society hut
Earlier today Crosspool Forum hosted a Special Open Meeting at St Columba’s to discuss recent vandalism to local allotments.
Fifty three allotment tenants from Marsh Lane, Hagg Lane, Rosco Bank and Rivelin attended with a view to discussing how to prevent such problems in the future.
The attendees came up with nine proposals – download the bullet point summary below.
As allotment holders appeal for spare materials to help them rebuild the Marsh Lane allotments cafe, tool store and site toilet, a special Open Meeting has been arranged to discuss the problem of Crosspool allotment vandalism.
The council have supplied a skip to Marsh Lane allotments and a group of gardener volunteers have been working to clear the site.
One plot belonging to allotment holder Jeff Walker was left devastated but thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor Jeff should be in a position to replace the shed with something more substantial and possibly fire resistant.
Marsh Lane allotment holders are now in desperate need for any timber, glass, concrete, breeze blocks, slabs and other building material to help rebuild their buildings. They’re particularly looking for support from local building yards and glass merchants.
If you can help then please call Jeff Walker on 07970 539986.
Meanwhile, local councillors, council officers, and our local police officers, in their determination to end the current blight of vandalism at local allotments, have arranged for an emergency Open Meeting to be held at  St Columba’s Church Hall, Friday 5 September at 10am. Everyone is welcome.
Back Lane is one Crosspool road which will now be gritted
Several Crosspool roads will be gritted this winter following the results of a public consultation into winter road maintenance.
Council chiefs have changed their mind on the gritting of 141 roads. Local streets including Hagg Hill, Coldwell Lane, Stephen Hill, Watt Lane, Back Lane and Bole Hill Road will now be included on gritting routes.
