Activities for children resume at St Columba’s

Autumn activities for children at St Columba’s church on Manchester Road are starting for the new term.

Stepping Stones, the music and story-time for pre-schoolers and their carers, is on Fridays at 1.45pm and is now fortnightly.

Messy Church starts up again on 27 September. This is a time of fun and crafts for families with primary school-age children, on Saturday from 4-6pm. The session includes family tea.

In collaboration with St Timothy’s church Crookes, St Solumba’s is offering a youth Alpha course, for young people aged 11+ who are interested in the Christian faith. There will be food, fun, video clips and opportunity to discuss in small groups. This will be on Thursdays at 6pm starting on 18 September.

Churchgoers at St Columba’s are inviting Crosspool residents to join them for prayers for peace in Gaza/Israel on Wednesdays throughout August at 8.30pm.

Historic Hallam Chase fell race returns to Crosspool tonight

This evening sees the historic Hallam Chase return to Crosspool, an annual fell race organised by Hallamshire Harriers and hosted by Hallam Cricket Club.

At 8pm on the Tuesday evening after the second bank holiday in May, runners set off from Hallam football/cricket club’s Sandygate ground, go down Den Bank through the Rivelin Valley and up to Stannington church, before returning by the same route. The run 3¼ miles long, with 800 feet of climb.

In 2013 John Alexander took first prize. The record time of 19 minutes 42 seconds was set in 1968 by Trevor Wright.

Crosspool Forum’s next Open Meeting will take place on Friday 25 April at St Columba’s church.

Light refreshments will be served from 6.30pm, with the main meeting starting at 7pm.

As well as a guest speaker, local councillors and the police will be on hand to listen to your concerns.

There will be an update on local Neighbourhood Watch schemes and Pam Walton from Pedal Ready will be encouraging us to get on our bikes.

A locksmith will also attend to give demonstrations and advice on keeping you and your property safe with secure locks.

Update 25 April, 6.30pm: Deputy prime minister and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg is confirmed as the guest speaker.

St Columba’s to host Carver Fields bonfire for Easter 2014

St. Columba’s church will be celebrating Easter morning, Sunday 20 April, with a bonfire and service held on Carver Fields at 9am.

The short service will be followed by breakfast, Easter egg hunt and celebration service in church.

To join St Columba’s for the bonfire, take the footpath off Hagg Lane opposite the junction with Den Bank Drive and walk across the field.

Sound of Music sing-a-long in aid of S6 food bank this Saturday

To raise awareness and donations for the Sheffield S6 Trussell Trust Foodbank, Crookes Community Singers are hosting a screening of the classic film Sound of Music – complete with sing-a-long subtitles so the audience can all join in.

There’s no admission fee – but everyone is asked to bring a suitable donation to the food bank. The event takes place on Saturday 5 April 2014 at St Thomas’ Church in Crookes. Doors open 1.45pm for 2pm start.

There’ll also be an optional fancy dress competition with prizes awarded for best adult and child (no political dress admitted.)
