Lydgate Green planting and tidy-up day, Saturday 27 April 2013

Friends of Lydgate Green is a small group of local residents who are responsible for the upkeep of the green at the corner of Lydgate Lane.

With a pair of gloves, something to dig with and plenty of enthusiasm to bring pleasure to all who visit the green this summer, the staff from the Artisan restaurant and a dozen or so local people turned up at 9.30am on Saturday to plant around one thousand bulbs and plants.

Afterwards, everyone took up an invitation to go back to the Artisan restaurant for refreshments. Whilst enjoying well-earned drinks fresh cream and chocolate cake kindly provided by Artisan, everyone took the time to get to know one another and reflect on a job well done.

Rachel Bacon said: “A big thank you from the Friends of Lydgate Green to those who came and helped us on Saturday morning. All the plants are in and watered so let’s hope for a bit more sunshine to bring them on.

“Thanks to Richard from Valleyside for all his advice and for doing us such a great deal on the plants, to the Rangers for coming on their day off, to the boys from Artisan for digging in and for the coffee and cake (yum!) and to Ian and Crosspool Forum for their help and to Jane, Kate, George, Tim and Samuel for all their help!”

Break-ins and burglaries: a reminder from the police to be vigilant

Over recent days one or two cars have been broken into and houses burgled in the neighbourhood.

The police are reminding us all not to leave items on show in our car and to keep car keys out of sight. They advise to keep your home and gardens as secure as possible and if you have outside lighting or alarms be sure to use them.

If you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to contact the police by ringing 101.

Local reservoir sites earmarked for new housing: update

Earlier this year local people had real concerns about proposals to allocate green field sites in the Crookes area for new housing. Two of the sites mentioned were Hadfield Reservoir (behind School Road) and Lydgate Reservoir (off Evelyn Road).

The council has now dropped plans to use the Hadfield site for new houses but the Lydgate site has not been ruled out and remains under consideration. Yorkshire Water has confirmed that they are “undertaking further investigations” at the Lydgate site.

However the council has said in a statement that “to provide advice on the archaeological value and ecological value of the site, an ecological assessment and a desk based archaeological assessment is being carried out.”

Although the council hasn’t made up its mind yet, ostensibly the usually purpose of investigations like these are to see whether a site is suitable for development.

Local residents are concerned at the prospect of losing yet another green and open space and worried about the possible knock-on effect new housing will have on traffic, road safety and local schools.

Five stars for Crosspool chippy

On Thursday 19 January this year a local authority hygiene inspector called unannounced at Crosspool Fish Bar on Sandygate Road.

Posing as a customer, she bought some fish and chips and then identified herself to the proprietor and subsequently inspected the rest of the premises.

We’re pleased to report that Crosspool’s chippy was awarded the food standards agency’s highest Food Hygiene Rating of five stars by Sheffield City Council.

Manchester Road Surgery launches early morning appointments

Manchester Road Surgery is to trial an early morning surgery on Mondays.

For three months from 30 April, patients will be able to book advance Monday appointments from 7.30am. The early morning slots are aimed at those with work or other commitments that find attending surgery during our normal hours difficult.

The surgery has asked people not to make an early morning appointment if you can come in during normal surgery hours (from 8.30am).

New surgery website

The news comes as the surgery launches its new website at www.manchesterroadsurgery.org.uk.

Visitors to the website can keep up with all latest surgery news. You’ll also find links to other websites where a wealth of health and wellbeing related information can be accessed.

The surgery website also reports on a newly formed patient group, and how patient power is making a difference at the surgery after the group contributed ideas that were used to develop a patient survey.

You can now also order repeat prescriptions via the internet and will soon be able to book advance appointments.

Water leak on Manchester Road

Water was leaking from the pavement adjacent to the Tavern Service Station on Monday morning. Police attended at around 9:30am to direct pedestrians around the potential hazard.

Shortly after 10am, Water UK (H2o) arrived to assess and repair what turned out to be a very large rip in the water main, thought to have been caused by the especially frosty conditions.

At around 2:30pm Water UK (H2o) was informing residents that they would be turning the water supply off to enable them to repair the leak. Unfortunately turning off the water and the subsequent repair proved more problematic than was first anticipated.

At teatime tonight, engineers were still working on the repair. We hope to have more information tomorrow.

Wednesday 18 January update: A new section of water main has been inserted, the hole has been filled in, and a matching top surface will be laid on Thursday to complete the repair.

20mph speed limit area consultation

Information from the South West Community Assembly about the proposed 20mph scheme. Consultation meetings run by the South West Community Assembly are taking place locally in Crookes and Fulwood the week commencing 23 January – see below.

We may get some feedback to report at Crosspool Forum’s Open Meeting on the 26 January.

20mph zone public information and Q&A session

Later this year Sheffield councillors will be looking at the potential for 20mph zones in Sheffield.

So that members of the public are better placed to feed into this process the South West Community Assembly is holding a number of Information Sessions in the local area.

Highways and Road Safety Officers will present information on 20mph Zones and be on hand to answer your questions at these sessions. We will also ask you about the areas that you feel should be a priority.

Rivelin farm shop reports festive success

The new owner of the ‘Coppice House Farm Shop’ Mike Kilner says, “thanks to the loyalty of existing and new customers, the shop has, after just four months of trading, exceeded all his expectations during its first festive period”.

Mike would like to offer a big thank you to all who helped him make it a success, and looks forward to continued growth for the future.

Coppice House Farm itself is still run perfectly well under the expert guidance of Frank Revitt. Frank took over the reins from his father, who had farmed the valley for well over 50 years.

You’ll find a display of pictures painted by year six children at Lydgate Infant School.

Although they are all commendable, your choice will be decisive in determining the winner of a competition to find the best. You can record your favourite with the GT News sales staff.

The child with the most votes by the 4 January 2012 will be presented with a £20 voucher.

Children’s Christmas Disco a big success

At the request of one of the younger members of our community, Crosspool Forum was proud to organise a Children’s Christmas Disco party.

As a result on Sunday 4 December, 35 young children enjoyed a party atmosphere in St Columba’s Church Hall.

Local children danced to the amusing music of Fabio’s Disco, enjoyed the excitement of playing musical chairs and were thrilled to pass-the-parcel, whilst their accompanying relatives relaxed with a cuppa and a bite to eat. With all this exertion, it wasn’t long before the children became thirsty and enthusiastically consumed the refreshments of drinks and nibbles.

At around 3.15 in the afternoon, little faces lit up when Santa arrived with gifts for all the children.

Thank you so very much to those who made the afternoon a great success and in so doing supported our endeavours to ensure that the children of Crosspool had a wonderful time, a smile and above all, happy memories.
