Something we’d like to Bring To Your Attention

This is written from the home of football, namely Sheffield. You will be aware of our claim and may well be aware of some of the initial contributions made by forward-thinking folk in Sheffield to the “Sheffield and soccer”.Hfc

The oldest football ground on the planet [1860] is that of Hallam FC, behind Sheffield FC which is the second oldest football club. The then landlord of the adjacent pub, “The Plough” at Sandygate, had formed a cricket club in 1850 and due to the establishment of Sheffield FC the members opened the ground up to football in 1860 https://www.hallamfc.co.uk/history.php  [A page worth visiting]

As with many locals,” The Plough” is currently closed and under threat of a developer turning the area into domestic housing.

The Plough has a unique pedigree football-wise and for over 150 years has been home to the pre and post-match camaraderie of thousands of those with a love of the game; it is an integral part of football’s history. It is believed that many of the original templates for the game were developed in The Plough

This could well be an FA rescue mission. The possibility of a pub, hotel, museum and only a few miles from Sheffield’s City Centre, an FA investment would pay dividends locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Over the years this city has provided chairmen of the FA… notably Sir Charles Clegg 1890 [aka the Napoleon of Football]. He played in the first international 1872 and refereed FA cup finals! The Clegg Cup and Shield are the oldest schools’ football trophies in the world. Charles and his brother William were amazing influences on the game. Other Sheffield Chairmen of distinction were, Sir Andrew Stephen 1967 and Geoff Thompson, OBE 2010.

100 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG

August 14th 1919 saw the official birth of Crookes Working Mens Club Ltd. Although the roots of the club go back a little further this is the date that they officially became recognised as a business.
To celebrate their 100th-birthday-party they are going to do what they do best and have a PARTY weekend.August 05, 2019 crookes social (1)

New Indian Restaurant in Crosspool

Varanassi InnWhat was the Aligarh restaurant, has now reopened as the “Varanassi Inn”, an authentic Indian restaurant.

After being unoccupied for almost four years and the subsequent refurbishment of the premises,

last Monday a stunning air-filled Charisma Balloons Quad Arch, in goldenrod and navy blue (supplied by Charisma),

RESURFACING WORK on sections of Manchester Road & Rivelin Valley Road

As part of the Streets Ahead highway works Amey will soon be resurfacing some sections of the following roads;

  • Manchester Road – Sheffield/Derbyshire boundary to Rivelin Valley Road.
  • Manchester Road – junction of Rivelin Valley Road to Hagg Lane.
  • Rivelin Valley Road – junction of Manchester Road to Holme Lane.

Work is about to start on Manchester Road (from Sheffield/Derbyshire boundary to Rivelin Valley Road) and work on the remaining section of Manchester Road and Rivelin Valley Road will take place in early to mid-August. Work will take place between the hours of 8pm and 5am, Monday – Friday only.

The work has been scheduled to take place at night to minimise disruption in the area. Amey appreciate that any disruption can be frustrating and thank you for your understanding whilst these important works are completed.

Please note this work will be completed under a road closure, and there will be no on-street parking on the section of road that they are resurfacing during working hours. Vehicles left on-street may be towed away and you will need to pay a fee to have your vehicle released.

Temporary road signs will be displayed ten days before work starts confirming the dates and duration of works and parking restriction signs will be displayed five days before.

PARKING AND ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS
Access to properties on the roads being worked on may be limited during working hours. On-street parking will be as normal at other times. Please let the Amey on-site supervisor know if you need vehicle access to your property for urgent reasons. Pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles will be available at all times.
If you are away during the period in which the works are scheduled to take place, please avoid parking your car on the road. The work schedule is heavily dependent on the weather and can be affected by unforeseen circumstances, so it may be necessary to change the start date at short notice. To ensure that the programme is delivered to schedule, cars that are delaying the works will need to be towed away.

BUS SERVICE AND BIN COLLECTION CHANGES
Changes to your regular bus service or diversion routes will be publicised by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport (SYPTE). Please check your local bus stop or http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com for any route changes. You can also call Traveline on 01709 515151 or follow @TravelSYorks on Twitter.

ROAD SAFETY

  • Be patient and take extra care during road works.
  • Make sure to allow extra time for your journey.
  • Stick to the designated diversion routes and always drive within the speed limit.

BOGUS CALLERS
If you are approached by someone claiming to be from Amey, the Council or connected to the Streets Ahead programme offering to resurface your drive please do not hand over any money. If possible take the callers details, including their vehicle registration number and Streets Ahead/Amey will inform the Police. All Streets Ahead and Amey employees carry identity cards. If you have any doubts about the identity of a person claiming to work for Streets Ahead please call customer services.

FUN AT THE FAYRE

Saturday 6th July, the morning started off raining overcast and dank, not a promising start to the day for the annual Crosspool Summer Fayre.2019 summer fayre collage

After a last-minute rush erecting the marquees, gazebos and inflating the bouncy castle/slide; the Fayre was officially open by the Rev. Suzanna Nockles. Happily the clouds had moved away to allow the warm sun to shine, on what turned out to be a wonderful afternoon for the many visitors to enjoy an upbeat performance by the ever-popular Scoil Rince Nua Irish Dancers – a rousing dance routine by the LMW Dance troop – Henry the cheeky monkey up to his usual tricks with the children’s favourite entertainer Barney Baloney –  the big band sound of Glenn Miller by the Ambassador Swing Band performing to a full audience, enjoying a cream tea provided by the Crosspool WI.

The local Holly Hagg Alpacas and Llama were a big favourite with the children as was the face painting, Henna Tattooed art and the traditional side stalls/attractions – wet sponge. splat the rat, archery, coconut shy, books, bric-a-brac, hot dogs, burgers, ice creams to mention but a few.
Dave Bolsover’s amazing family guitar stall gave budding musicians the chance to have a go at strumming, possibly to stardom.

Later in the afternoon the 2019 Crosspool Festival scarecrow competition winners and raffle winners were presented with their prizes. All the children received a gift for a happy smile.

The Crosspool Forum organisers would like to thank all this year’s sponsors, the team of local people that turned up in the rain to help set up the event and everyone for attending and making this year’s Crosspool Summer Fayre a special day for everyone. Thank you.

LOST BELONGINGS

We would like to get the following items back to their owners:- Lost & Found
“SMALL TOOL BATTERY & CHARGER, left at this year’s Crosspool Festival Sunday Market with the baked potato van for charging, but never collected.
“DOOR KEY”, found at the Crosspool Summer Fayre, CDYST Playing field Saturday 6th July 2019
“INLINER ROLLERBLADES” Size 32-35…20-22, handed in after the 2018 Summer Fayre, and still remain unclaimed.
“UMBRELLA” A few weeks ago, a Good Samaritan stopped to help a local lady who had fallen down in the precinct. Staying to give assistance until the ambulance arrived; unfortunately this Good Samaritan left their umbrella by the kerbside. Now fully recovered from her ordeal, the lady would like us to pass on her sincere thanks to this kind person.  The umbrella has been left at Bamforth’s Fruit Shop.

HOME OF FOOTBALL WILL BE LOST FOREVER “UPDATE”

NEW DEADLINE EXTENDED to JULY 22nd.
Thanks to everyone who submitted an objection to the proposed demolition of the former Plough Inn. Over 150 objections have been submitted which shows the strength of community support for this iconic building.

Due to one of the site notices only going out in late June, we have now been informed that objections to the proposal can be made up to July 22nd 2019. So, if you didn’t get round to submitting an objection, you still have time.
Obviously, the more objections made, the better the chance of saving the building.
