A recent spate of opportunist break-ins to parked vehicles have occurred recently around Tapton Hill Road and the surrounding streets.
Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles and be vigilant at all times. Please report any suspicious activity straight away to either 999 for emergency or 101 for non-emergencies.
Residents on Sandygate Park say they have been let down by a private hospital assurances to end disruptive parking by staff near their homes.
They are angry that roads near their homes are used as a car park by staff from the nearby Claremont Hospital.
Now people living nearby say they have had enough and want action by the police and the city council to end the long-running row, which is blighting their lives.
“A minority of staff at the hospital are behaving irresponsibly and inconsiderately,” said John Parsons who added that access to his home on Sandygate Park is often obstructed.
“The roads on Sandygate Park are very narrow and there is also a safety issue with people parking on Carsick Hill and Ivy Park Road – often partly on the pavement.”
Councillors Anne Murphy and Craig Gamble Pugh are supporting the residents and say they will back renewed calls for action.
Staff are not allowed to use the car parks at the hospital, on Sandygate Road. It seemed the problem had been solved when last year, in response to residents’ protests backed by councillors, the hospital arranged extra off-road parking for staff in the area.
Residents say those parking places are left empty with some staff refusing to walk even a few hundred yards and continuing to park on narrow residential roads in defiance of pleas from the hospital management.
Councillors Anne Murphy and Craig Gamble Pugh are determined to see action taken. It is hoped to arrange a meeting between residents and the community police officer. They also want a meeting to explain the residents’ concerns to the city council officials responsible for parking and roads.
“We were promised by the director of Claremont Hospital that staff would be encouraged to use the alternative car parking spaces but unfortunately there is a group of staff who have deliberately ignored those requests,” said Councillor Murphy.
“The residents are often elderly and in some cases disabled and access to their homes is important. This should not be happening, it’s unnecessary and we will work for a solution.”
Some residents have tried to talk to the drivers and explain the problems but say they are met with abuse and threats.
“If you challenge the (hospital) staff you are abused and residents have been threatened with being reported to the police for being ‘aggressive’,” said John Parsons.
“People have been accused of vandalising cars with no evidence or cause. In one appalling incident a pensioner in his mid-70s found two policemen at his door saying he had ‘behaved aggressively’ to two female members of (hospital) staff after he challenged their obstruction of his drive.”
He added: “With the help of our local councillors’ we did feel the problem had been resolved but it’s not the case. I can’t be optimistic after three years of trying, and five meetings with the director of the hospital that something will be done by the hospital.”
It’s our understanding that a decision has been taken to sell the Carver fields on Hagg Lane.
These fields have provided a healthy recreational facility for everyone for many years. If this proves to be the case, and the fields become a building site, this would be a significant loss to the community and to our heritage.

This is a heartfelt reminder to dog walkers, who use Clough Field and other open spaces used by local children.
Please remember, in the interest of our children’s health, to clear up your dog’s mess by placing it safely into a biodegradable bag, and putting it into a special dog litter bin. If you cannot find a dog bin, then double wrap the dog bag and place it in a normal litter bin. Having no bags is not an excuse for failing to protect our children’s health and wellbeing.
Dog mess is a public nuisance, an eyesore and a threat to health. If you take a dog out (on or off the lead), (with the exception of being registered blind), you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog messes in a public place, even if you are not the owner. If your dog goes out on its own and makes a mess, you’re still responsible – ignorance is not an excuse.

Local residents have been in contact with local councillors and council candidates, as well as raising the issue at Crosspool Forum, to express their views that the stretch of Manchester Road through Crosspool should have a speed limit of 30mph rather than the current 40mph.
Two of our councillors believe it would be safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers/passengers in a residential area and that it would have no discernible impact on the overall time of car journeys through Crosspool and into the city.
They recognise that the council has many requests for traffic measures, and that funding cuts mean that it can only undertake a limited number each year. However, they accept in principle that there should be a reduction in the speed limit and ensure that it is considered seriously for early implementation.

Thieves who are stealing milk from the doorsteps of Crosspool homes could force our local milkmen to quit.
Local milkman Russell, who delivers dairy supplies to homes across the Crosspool and Lodge Moor area, explained: “In all my years of doing my round, this is the worst for doorstep milk theft. I’m shocked how brazen they are. They follow me round, in what I suspect is a black four wheel drive vehicle. Not only do they steal pints of milk they also take the milk crates and covers. It’s happening all across my round and it’s got to the point where I having to hide the bottles.”
The police would like to hear from anyone who has any information or CCTV footage of the culprits and or of the vehicle used in the crime. Contact the police 101 or if caught in the act ring 999.

Thanks to the high standard of the photographs submitted by local residents, all 300 of the 2016 Crosspool Calendars have now been snapped up.
Crosspool Forum would like to give a big thank you to all the photographers and advertisers who entered into the community spirit to make the Crosspool calendar a must-have Christmas acquisition.
Money raised will go towards Crosspool Forum funds for local events and improvements to our neighbourhood.
The dedication of the Crosspool Forum vice chairman Steve Reynolds has been recognised with him being presented with the 2015 Crosspool person of the year award.
The award, set up in 2013 by Crosspool Forum on a suggestion by St Columba’s minister Reverend Frances Eccleston, acknowledges commitment, accomplishment and achievement by individuals in the neighbourhood.
On the recommendation of the Frances, Crosspools first award winner was Sue Havenhand, the retired headteacher of Lydgate Junior School.
In 2014 some 50 residents, at an open meeting, proposed and voted Ian Hague, Crosspool Forum Chairman, as the person to receive the award.
For the 2015 award, voting slips were compiled from a shortlist of people, nominated by the public and published in the Crosspool Clarion. Steve Reynolds, receiving the most votes, was presented with an engraved tankard and certificate at last week’s open meeting.
After lengthy discussions with conservation and community groups, plans have now been submitted for permission to construction the underground option to house the new tanks required for the first stage of the treatment process.
This large project will enable Yorkshire Water to continue to supply water to large parts of Sheffield.
If you would like to know more about the project, a spokeperson from Yorkshire Water will be addressing the Crosspool Forum Open Meeting on Thursday, starting 7pm at St Columba’s.
Following the torrential thunderstorm in the early hours, it was a murky start to 4 July.
As the low cloud and fine drizzle slowly cleared throughout the morning, the CDYST sports field & hall on Coldwell Lane were gradually transformed, by an army of volunteers, into the setting for the Crosspool Forum Summer Fayre.
The event was officially opened by a lifelong Crosspool lady Faye Buxton, who earlier this year had moved from Sheffield to be nearer her family.
As visitors arrived to enjoy the attractions, stalls and entertainment by local Irish dancers, the Yorkshire Chandelier Clog dancers, Richard Francis Duo and the children’s favourite comedian/magician Barney Baloney, the sun broke through and shone for the whole afternoon.
A truly enjoyable day was had by everyone.
The organisers of the Fayre would like to thank everyone for attending the event and especially the team of dedicated volunteers who helped make the whole event possible.
