A local resident who has spent decades helping out in our local community has been rewarded with this year’s Crosspool Person of the Year award.

Sheila Lomas is well known for her voluntary work at Tapton Congregational Church where she has been involved with hosting garden parties, Christmas events and summer fetes and other fundraisers.

Her selfless work in the local community has been truly remarkable and she is a worthy recipient for this award.

In 1997 Sheila started the Soup and a Roll lunch club with 6 guests. Still running today, it has grown to nearly 40 diners, meeting monthly for lunch, a natter and an afternoon of entertainment.

Crosspool Forum had arranged for the Lord Mayor Councillor Anne Murphy to make the presentation at the Open Meeting on Thursday, but due to a last minute reschedule the Lord Mayor was unable to attend and has therefore kindly agreed to officially present Sheila with the award a little later in the year.

The speed limit on a stretch of Manchester Road in Crosspool has been reduced to 30mph.

For around 40 years the speed limit has been 40mph between Den Bank Avenue and Coppice View.

There has been continued concern by residents for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians along this part of the road and over the years there have been requests for it to be reduced back to its original speed limit of 30mph.

New meaning to ‘snail mail’ for Crosspool historian

Crosspool historian Joe Castle

When Crosspool historian Joe Castle, 90, received a parcel of documents through the post he was shocked to find them nibbled around the edges.

A letter from Royal Mail was inside the parcel, explaining that despite putting slug pellets inside their boxes, snails had climbed inside the letterbox and munched away at his package.

Joe said: “I find it all a  little bit comical. Although a bit nibbled around the edges the documents weren’t too badly damaged. I think you’ll agree that it gives a whole new meaning to snail mail.”

The letter from Royal Mail explained: “I am sorry that the enclosed letter has been damaged and subsequently delayed. The item was found during a scheduled collection from a post box and had been damaged by snails. Unfortunately, despite regular cleaning and placing slug pellets in the boxes, we find that slugs and snails still occasionally manage to creep into the apertures, fall down into the box and start eating the glue on the stamps and envelopes.”

The statement went on to apologise for the unusual tampering and delay to Joe’s letter.

Residents in Crosspool nominated and elected Glenda de Brouwer the 2016 Crosspool Person of the Year.

The award was presented to Glenda by Crosspool Forum chair Ian Hague during the Lydgate Junior School’s Friday morning assembly, marking the valued and much-appreciated contribution she has made to our community.

Glenda’s dedicated leadership of the Beavers every week in the Benty Lane scout hut for the past 12 years and her positive influence as a teacher at Lydgate Junior School has benefited many children and parents and made her both well-known and respected in the community.

The time and leadership Glenda has given through scouting, teaching and many other things has led to countless young people having life-enriching experiences.

Crosspool would not be such a great place to live without people like Glenda, who just gets on with serving the community week in, week out.

Whilst at the school, Ian Hague and vice chair of the Crosspool Forum Steve Reynolds took the opportunity to present a £300 cheque towards the school funds, a proportion of money raised from this year’s Crosspool Forum’s festival.
