It came about following the excellent photography events at Crosspool Festival this year, run by Holdfast Photography.
This video from the recent Crosspool Street Market shows some of the dancing performed on the day.
Tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday morning) are your last chances to enjoy the free art exhibition in St Columba’s church on Manchester Road.
The show is open tonight until 7pm and has its final viewing slot 10am-1pm tomorrow. Works on display include those by local artists who live in the Crosspool area or are involved in the Crosspool community.
Entry is free and the organisers are collecting donations to the Soup Run. Many of the paintings are original works and are available to buy. 15% of sales is donated to the Soup Run.
You can also view entries to the Crosspool Festival programme competition. The prize winning cover designs are by Constanza Valdovinos, Lydgate Junior School (front) and Sahar-Lavendar Ali Ahmed, Lydgate Infant School (back).

People from all over Sheffield flocked to buy local food, drink, gifts and crafts at Sunday’s Crosspool street market on Selborne Road.
The beautiful weather meant that visitors could make an afternoon of it and also enjoy music and dance performances from Lydgate school pupils. Many of the local shops also got behind the event and opened up for the day.

There are plenty more events at Crosspool Festival this week, including the big Summer Fayre on Saturday and Community Picnic on Sunday.
In the latest in this series of occasional interviews with local residents, we meet local magician Dan Ellis.
How long have you lived in Crosspool and what do you like about it?
I’ve lived in Crosspool for my whole life which is 18 years. It close to everything that I need. School was only a five minute walk, grab a bit of lunch from the shops and its only 15 minutes on the bus away from the city centre.
How did you get into being a magician? Are you in the Magic Circle?
I get asked this a lot and my honest answer is I have no idea how I got into it. My granddad was a magician but he died when I was young and I don’t really remember him. I think most boys get a magic set for Christmas when their little and most of them grow out of it. I guess I didn’t! I am a member of the Sheffield Magic Circle.
What does this involve doing day to day?
Being a magician isn’t as glamorous as it might sound. Day to day I just meet people, make phone calls, send emails and letters to get myself more gigs. When I do perform I do mainly close-up magic which is the sort of stuff you might see the likes of David Blaine doing on TV. I do magic right under people’s noses so there are no boxes or glamorous assistants to hide behind; it’s just me having fun with my audience.
Has being an magician given you the opportunity to tour and travel?
I’ve done shows up and down the country but a majority of my work is local. It is yet to take me abroad but hopefully it won’t be too long. Magic is the sort that thing that come across well in any language so I hope it can take me all over the world in the future.
What sort of performances to do do for events, parties or corporate dos? If people are interested in booking you, how can they get in touch?
Like I said I’m mainly a close-up magician meaning I do magic for small groups of people at parties, weddings and corporate events. I mix and mingle with guests and perform magic right under their noses.
Magic is a great ice breaker which is why I think corporate events and weddings are very good venues for it. Often there are groups of people who have never met before and my magic creates a talking point for people. It also helps create a great atmosphere which fits in with parties and weddings really well.

If you could do one thing to make Crosspool better, what would it be?
I can’t really think if anything I would change in Crosspool apart from maybe having a magic shop here but that would probably put me out of a job if everyone could do it! I think that things like the Crosspool Festival and the summer fare are really great things for the community and I think that Crosspool should have more of these things.

As Pc Atha was on leave there was no report, but residents made the following points to be passed on to her – as well as point 1 above.
New Cllr Geoff Cox was welcomed, & said he was still in a ‘listening mode’, but hopes to get his contact details out to the public ASAP .
Residents being able to choose for themselves what to use their recycling bin BLUE BINS & BLUE BOXES for may start on 23rd May – watch this space!
The proposed hessian bag GREEN GARDEN WASTE SCHEME is not now happening – green bags are available once more from eg the libraries for green waste. At the moment the ‘winter’ scheme of residents ‘phoning to arrange collection is still in force – this may take 21 days. Cllrs agreed that re-opening the Botanical Gardens cafe was a high priority.
There is sufficient in the ‘kitty’ to cover this year’s flowers, but (see above) grants will be needed for future projects
Rev Frances Eccleston reported that the Festival will open with Crosspool Open Gardens on Sat 2nd July, a Street Market on Sun 3rd, and 0 after a range of day & evening events – end with the Summer Fayre on Sat 9th & Picnic in the Park (Lydgate Green) on Sun 10th. More volunteers still warmly welcomed!
Carrie McKenzie (Voluntary Action Sheffield) said that all old TVs & aerials should work fine with the new digital signal. People receiving TV through SKY dishes or by cable will not be affected at all when the analogue signal is switched off, but if TV comes via an aerial some form of ‘digibox’ for the new freeview 15 channels will be needed. If residents get their TV signals from the Crookes transmitter then BBC2 will disappear on 10th Aug (& the other channels two weeks later) – if from Emley Moor BBC2 will go on 7th Sep (& the others on 21st) and if from Belmont (not very likely in this area) 3rd August (& 17th). Residents over 75 will have received a letter already asking them whether they need an installer to call & tune their sets in – if they biined this by accidents further letters will be sent! Video recorders will still work to play old videos, but not record any longer..
Next Open Meeting will be on Thursday 28 July 2011, at St Columba’s, 7pm.
One of the highlights of Crosspool Festival 2010 was the Farmers Market on Selbourne Road.
The Farmers Market will be running again this year as part of Crosspool Festival. It is pencilled in for Sunday 3 July, once again on Selbourne Road. If you’d like to book a stall then email e.kehoe@hotmail.co.uk.
Meanwhile, early details of some more festival events have been added to the Crosspool Festival 2011 page, including An Evening with the BBC’s Richard Taylor Crosspool’s Got Talent, a family barn dance and Picnic in the Park.
