There will be major disruptions to 51 bus service to Crosspool next week

Update 6 August: Looks like the shuttle bus may be in use now.

Update 3 August: After all the fuss, it seems the 51 is going via Manchester Road/Coldwell Lane after all.

31 July, 9am update: First Bus have announced that they will provide a free shuttle bus between Crosspool and Brook Hill. This will operate every 30 minutes between approximately 7.30am and 6.30pm. No fares will be charged – this is to feed into the main 51 bus.

The 51 bus service will not run along part of Sandygate Road next week during the day due to road improvement works for the Streets Ahead project.

From Monday 3 to Friday 7 August, from 7am-7pm each day, 51 buses will run between Broomhill and Sandygate along Fulwood Road, Gladstone Road, Ivy Park Road, Carsick Hill Road and re-join the normal route on Sandygate Road to and form Lodge Moor.

Buses on services 273, 274 and 275 are not affected and will still run along Manchester Road and along Benty Lane and Sandygate Road travelling towards the city centre through Crosspool as normal.

At the Crosspool Forum Open Meeting last night concerns were raised in particular about families not being able to easily access Ryegate Children’s Centre on Manchester Road.

Crosspool’s tea and coffee shop will close for building work before reopening under new management.

Outgoing Lounge @ Crosspool owner Paula, who set up the cafe in April 2012, is retiring. She said:

“After making 38,000 pots of tea, 20,000 coffees and lots of burnt tea cakes I have sadly hung up my soggy, flour covered apron for good! I have had the best 3-and-a-half years and realised my dream.

“I have learnt so much taking my little sad shop and transforming it into a very successful business that I will always be proud of. I have made some amazing life long friends and thank you so much for letting me into your lives. Heartfelt thanks. Paula xxx”

We’ll miss you, Paula! As soon as we have details of plans for the cafe we’ll share them.

Guided history walk around Crosspool on Tuesday 30 June

A guided history walk of Crosspool will depart at 10am from St Columba’s church on Tuesday 30 June.

The walk is led by Jan Millward and will take in historical places of interest in the Crosspool area with interesting stories about the people who lived and worked here. It’ll take about an hour and a half.

And if you don’t fancy the official history walk, get yourself a copy of Crosspool Chronicles walking guide, which will be on sale at the street market on Sunday 28 June and locally throughout festival week.

The walks cover Crosspool, Sandygate, Lydgate, Bell Hagg and Tapton Hill right back to 1695, looking at who lived here and where and what they did. There are lots of old photos and stories to enjoy.

The National Trust would like help looking after their new community allotment plot at Hagg Lane allotments in Crosspool.

They hold a regular workday 1:30pm-3pm each Tuesday and ad-hoc events take place on other days.

Members of the public are more than welcome to come along and join in. They particularly need someone who lives locally to nip in to water the plants in the polytunnel.

The allotment is at the very top of the site and is accessed via Stephen Hill.

A to let/for sale sign has gone up outside the former Motor World building on the Lydgate Lane/Manchester Road. Sandygate Road junction.

The brochure advertising the Crosspool property states that the shop is to let with or without the upper floor and the that the owners would be open to selling the whole premises.

In a recent Facebook post, residents were asked what sort of business they would like to replace Motor World. Ideas included a coffee shop, petrol station, wine bar, deli, hardware shop, micropub, another car spares shop, clothes shop, DIY store, solicitors office, charity shop and gym.

The Crosspool Motor World shop closed in March after going into administration.

Open up your garden and raise money for charity at Crosspool Open Gardens

Crosspool Open Gardens 2011
Open up your garden as part of this year’s Crosspool Open Gardens

Open Gardens is on the look out again for people in Crosspool who would like to be community spirited and open their garden to raise some money for their chosen charity.

Anyone can have a go! This event is to encourage people to get outside, walk round the neighbourhood, meet new people and enjoy their gardens.

No previous experience required, no perfect gardens needed, just a warm welcome, a patch of interest in the garden be it plants, vegetables, chickens, bees or an activity you’d like to share with others.

Oh and maybe a cuppa with a nice piece of cake!
