Williamson Hardware will move next door to make way for Sainsbury’s

Williamson Hardware in Broomhill
Williamson Hardware in Broomhill: will move next door to make way for Sainsbury’s

Broomhill institution Williamson Hardware will move into an adjacent unit to make way for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The landlord of the unit gained planning permission to develop the site for a new occupier earlier this month and it has been confirmed that Sainsbury’s will take it on.

It is believed that Williamson will move into the smaller property next door which was until recently occupied by Blackwell’s bookshop.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said: “The future of local traders is important to us, and we are pleased that Williamson, a long standing local trader, has agreed plans with their landlord to relocate to another adjacent unit on Fulwood Road.”

Williamson has been trading in Broomhill for 52 years.

Crosspool residents left in the dark over faulty street lights

Dransfield Road, the lower part of Watt Lane and neighbouring roads into Ranmoor have been without working street lights for over a week.

The problem was reported on Sunday 7 October to Street Force but the street lights have not yet been repaired. We’re awaiting their response to find out how serious the issue is and when a repair will happen.

In the meantime, drivers and pedestrians are advised to take extra care on affected roads after dark.

Previous problems with street lights in this area were caused by a faulty underground cable, which can take up to 30 days to fix.

Update at 7pm: the street lights are working again now on Dransfield Road.

Sheffield Local Television: Crosspool residents have their say

Crosspool residents gave Look North reporters their views on Sheffield’s forthcoming local TV station on Wednesday.

BBC television cameras broadcast live from Hallgate Road for the 6.30pm bulletin and the report included interviews with local residents from outside Spar.

Sheffield Local Television (SLTV) won the bid for the new TV station, which is expected to broadcast from the Crosspool transmitter next year. It will be available on Freeview channel 8 and show at least four hours of local programming every day.

You can watch the report again on BBC iPlayer until Wednesday 17 October 2012:

Hopes for 51 bus service to improve with new timetable

Bus 51: revised route and new ticketing proposed
51 bus: a more reliable service?

Bus operator First is expecting Crosspool’s bus service to improve with the introduction of a more resilient timetable from 28 October.

In June, First admitted the 51 service fell short on punctuality. A more resilient new timetable has been designed in response.

A First spokesperson said:

“The new timetable will be much more resilient, incorporating longer journey times to reflect delays and greater recovery time at Lodge Moor before departure on the next journey. More buses and drivers will be required to operate it but deployed to maintain the present level of service where we’re falling short.”

Another expected output from the Sheffield Bus Partnership consultation was that the 51 route would change, with the bus would going via West Street instead of Broad Lane and the drop-in medical centre on Rockingham Street. It doesn’t appear that this change has been implemented in the new timetable.

A new citywide ticket which can be used on all bus and tram services in Sheffield will also be introduced on 28 October.

More recycling delays for Crosspool

Manchester Road
Manchester Road: recycling should be collected tomorrow

Crosspool households on Manchester Road and Ringstead Avenue are still waiting for their blue bins and boxes to be emptied today.

Veolia have advised that they should all be emptied tomorrow (Tuesday).

Two weeks ago there were also delays to Veolia’s recycling service, with 12 roads in our area not having their recycling collected on the scheduled day.

Beautiful South and Housemartins singer’s Crosspool memory

St. Columba’s church, Crosspool: the location of one of Paul Heaton’s first musical memories

Paul Heaton from The Beautiful South and The Housemartins has been recalling memories of St Columba’s youth club in a BBC radio documentary.

In today’s The First Time With…Paul Heaton programme on BBC 6 Music, the singer-songwriter described the youth club disco at St Columba’s on Manchester Road as the location of one of his first musical memories:

“My brother and his mates were allowed to go and I was under 12 at the time so wasn’t allowed in. Me and my middle brother sneaked to the edge of the door and looked underneath it. They were playing The Jean Genie by David Bowie.

“At the time wooden stacked heels were in fashion. My brother and his mates were all doing this dance, banging their stack heels on the floor. It was unbelievable. The noise of them banging their stack heels was louder than the music itself.”

You can listen again to the programme for seven days. St Columba’s is mentioned around 2 minutes, 45 seconds in.

Classroom changes at local schools

Children and staff returned to King Edward VII Lower School, on Darwin Lane to a larger playground last week. During the summer recess two mobile classrooms erected three years ago to cater for an increase in the school intake were removed, returning the playground back to its original appearance.

Across the playing field, neighbouring Lydgate Junior School has craned in a new mobile unit with two additional classrooms for the new school term. The school is undergoing a full heating system upgrade; the mobile classrooms are a temporary measure hopefully until Easter 2013 to allow the upgrade works to continue without any disruption to the running of the school.

Recycling bins and boxes will be emptied today

Blue bins and boxes weren't emptied on some Crosspool roads on Monday
Blue bins and boxes weren’t emptied on some Crosspool roads on Monday

If your blue bin and box didn’t get emptied yesterday then it should be dealt with today, according to Veolia.

Problems with collection lorries on Monday meant that around 12 roads in our area didn’t have their recycling collected. If you keep your bin and box left out today they should get emptied.

Sheffield residents recently moved to fortnightly collections, alternating between black wheelie bins one week and blue recycling bins/boxes the other.
