Weekend snow affects roads in Crosspool

Snow arrived in Crosspool on Saturday afternoon, causing problems on local roads and delays to public transport services.

Major roads were gritted in preparation for the snowfall, which was over 10cm deep on some areas by the morning.

By Sunday afternoon the 51 bus service was back to normal and most of the main roads through Crosspool were passable. However, surface snow and ice on side roads were continuing to cause trouble for cars, with evidence of at least one minor accident in the neighbourhood.

The thaw appears to have already started and no further snow is forecast over the next few days. However, as temperatures remain low, any lingering snow and surface water may turn to ice so drivers and pedestrians are advised to take care – particularly on Crosspool’s hilly roads.

Do also check up on your neighbours who may feel isolated and vulnerable during the bad weather.

First snow of the season arrives in Crosspool

Last night the first snow of the season settled in Crosspool.

By this morning the pavements and roads were lightly covered. At 8am, it had turned to slush on the main road through the precinct and on Manchester Road. Some light snow was still falling.

There is no snow on the ground once you get past Shore Lane, however it is still very wet and quite slippery so be careful if you are heading out.

Crosspool snow photo

As Crosspool is blanketed today in a fresh covering of snow, Jon Gardner’s photo showing abandoned cars on the A57 close to Hagg Lane reminds us of how bad the weather was last month. You may have also seen it published in the Sheffield Telegraph as part of the paper’s look back at 2010.

Meanwhile, as of 2pm, the Travel South Yorkshire website is reporting that there are no problems reported on bus route 51 and it is running as normal.

Boxing day match postponed

This was issued by Hallam FC this morning:

Following a pitch inspection at 10.00 am this morning (23rd December 2010), it is with great regret that the Boxing Day 150th Anniversary Match between Hallam FC & Sheffield FC at The Worlds Oldest Football Ground, Sandygate Road, Sheffield has had to be postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Good news

A date for the match to be played has been pencilled in for Good Friday the 22nd of April 2011 – which will round off Hallam FCs 150th Season.

ALL TICKETS PURCHASED FOR BOXING DAY WILL BE VALID FOR THE RE-ARRANGED DATE and we will keep you informed on confirmation of the fixture date as soon as we have approval from both Leagues.

Despite the huge disappointment of not being able to add this historic spectacle to your festive season Hallam FC would like to wish you and yours all the best for Christmas and The New Year and look forward to seeing you in April.

Kind Regards

  • With supporters travelling from around the UK and abroad, a pitch inspection is planned for tomorrow (Thursday 23 December) to assess the impact of the current cold spell. Following this an update will be issued regarding the likelihood of the match taking place, as the club very much hopes it will. There will also be a pitch inspection on the day of the match

We’ll pass on any news as soon as we get it after tomorrow’s pitch inspection.

Council u-turn on recycling bins and boxes

The Yorkshire Post and Sheffield Star report that from next year, the council will allow Crosspool householders to select how they use their blue bin and blue box for recycling.

With the current system, residents must use the bin for bottles and the box for paper. But from April, you will be able to choose which you use for which type of item.

The news will come as a relief to elderly residents, some of whom found the boxes cumbersome to move when full of paper and also susceptible to windy and wet weather due to the detachable lid.

Care for the vulnerable and isolated in bad weather

During the current severe weather people are being asked to pay particular attention to the needs of vulnerable or isolated people.

For some, just going out to the shops, doctors or to see family and friends can become very difficult – and dangerous. Being stuck indoors for days on end can also lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

So do take a minute or two to knock at your elderly neighbour’s door to say hello, check that they are OK and have the things they need, as this could really make a huge difference. If nothing else, it can help to prove to people that they are not forgotten.

If you continue to have concerns about someone, please don’t hesitate to telephone our Local Action Crisis Team on 0114 273 5822.

Illustrating some of the problems that people are having, the Sheffield Star reports that the Yorkshire Ambulance Service had to call in an Edale Mountain Rescue Land Rover to collect an elderly injured man in Crosspool when an ambulance got stuck.

Crosspool businesses open despite major snowfall

Shops and businesses in Crosspool opened this morning despite what the council is describing as the deepest December Sheffield snowfall for a century.

The photos below were taken just before 9am this morning, and show Philip James butchers, GT News, Spar and the greengrocers all open for business. MG Mosley & Sons milk float was also out and about making deliveries as normal.

Local community spirit was also in evidence, with residents assisting with the clearing of snow and making trips to the shops to pick up supplies for neighbours. With the local schools all closed today (Wednesday 1 December 2010), children are also making the most of the snow with sledging and snowballing.

People are being encouraged to only use cars if absolutely necessary and also check that elderly neighbours are coping with the conditions.

Travel South Yorkshire advises that bus services have been suspended until further notice.
