A former British taekwondo champion and European bronze medallist and his wife are setting up a new taekwondo club in Crosspool.
Champions Taekwondo will take place 6–7pm every Thursday from 14 June at Benty Lane scout hut.
It is run by Scott and Joanne Graham, who are Crosspool residents with children in local schools. Joanne explained: “We offer a safe and friendly learning environment with the emphasis for children being on the fun aspect of learning, allowing them to progress without pressure.”
Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art, with a focus on kicking and self defence. Practitioners can expect to gain greater degrees of fitness, flexibility, concentration and confidence, which can be important for childrens’ development.
Adults and children, from beginners to advanced, are welcome. The first lesson is free then it is £4.50 per lesson afterwards.
Newly-formed rugby union club Hallamshire RUFC is running an Easter rugby camp on 2-3 April on Tapton school playing fields. It is aimed at children between 6 and 14 years old from the surrounding areas.
Organiser Matt Akers said: “Our aim is to give a fun day based around rugby union and promote enjoyment within the game. If any youngsters are then interested we hope to offer them a chance to play through our newly set up youth system.”
The RFU is backing the day and are offering local community coaches to assist in the day’s events. The club’s members are CRB-cleared and have coaching badges.
Improvements have been made to Sandygate, the oldest football ground in the world
The refurbishment of Hallam FC’s ground in Crosspool will be celebrated next year with an event on 13 April.
Sandygate, officially recognised as the oldest football ground in the world, has been improved with refurbished clubhouse and dressing rooms, the relaying of paths inside the ground, new barriers and work to the pitch.
Speaking on Radio Sheffield this morning, chairman David Slater said: “We think we’ve got the best ground in the Northern Counties League. There are some wonderful places that have had Football Foundation grant aid but we’re very proud of what we’ve done and match up to anybody. People come all over the world to see us. We have to keep that ground spick and span and it is now.”
On Boxing Day 1860 at Sandygate Road, the world’s oldest and second oldest clubs played the first ever inter-club match, a 2-0 victory for Sheffield, the senior side, who prevailed despite fielding fewer men.
Kick off this afternoon is at 3pm.

Crosspool's James Gray winning the South Yorkshire Championship
A Tapton student, James Gray of Crosspool, has been awarded a special award from the Sheffield Federation of School Sports for his outstanding contribution to schools cross country running over the last seven years.
Eighteen year old James, who represented Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, and has been Sheffield and South Yorkshire champion for most of those seven years, was presented with the award at a ceremony attended by Councillor Dr Sylvia Dunkley, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, at the Sheffield United FC Bramall Lane on 24 November 2011.
He is also due to receive another honour in January from the South Yorkshire Schools Federation.

Millhouses Juniors U9s 2 Crosspool Juniors U9s 3
Crosspool Juniors Under 9s secured a narrow aggregate victory away to local rivals Millhouses Juniors to move into the top three of division V.
In the first game, Millhouses took the lead during the first half with a goal on the break. Crosspool went close to equalising through Taylor Hill after a good team move. Joe Reilly also forced a fine save from the Millhouses keeper. In the second half a last ditch Matthew Johnson tackle kept the score at 1-0 before Taylor Hill equalised. A Joe Reilly header hit the bar late on, but it finished all square.
Going into the second game at 1-1, Crosspool took a first half lead through Alex Darke. First time captain Jon Wilde made a good recovery tackle and clearance. Millhouses equalised in the second half only for Crosspool to respond immediately with a powerful finish from Damon. A hectic finale saw chances at both ends but Crosspool stood firm to come out on top.
Crosspool’s final league game of 2012 sees them take on Manton Athletic on Sunday 4 December at home at the C.D.Y.S.T.
