Lydgate Lane to close for a month

Lydgate Lane is to close between Crookes Road and Ryegate Crescent from Monday 9 May for essential water mains work.

The road is due to reopen on 7 June 2011. If you have queries then the helpline for contractors Balfour Beatty is 0800 121 4444.

The bottom section of Lydgate Lane, around the Grindstone is already closed, with a diversion running via Nairn Street and Bute Street.

Last summer, Manchester Road and Glossop Road closed for the replacement of gas mains, but they reopened nearly a month early as the work took less time than originally anticipated.

Dransfield Road street lights could take 30 days to repair

On Saturday 23 April, the Dransfield Road street lights failed to come on.

Street Force were informed and have now got back in touch today to say that the fault is with the underground cable and it could take up to 30 days to repair:

The problem with the street light son Dransfield Road is now caused by a fault on the underground cable network owned and operated by Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Ltd. (YEDL) and has been passed to them. They were notified of the fault (Ref: 261958) yesterday.

YEDL work to repair faults within 30 working days of them receiving notification, however, their priority is to maintain the supply to housing, which in some cases, may mean that street lighting faults take slightly longer to resolve.

Contact will be made with YEDL to try and speed up the investigation and repair of the fault.

In the meantime, drivers and pedestrians are advised to take extra care on Dransfield Road after dark.

Manchester Road street lights repaired

All but one of the street lights are along the Broomhill end of Manchester Road are now working again.

A fuse has been replaced and providing there is no permanent damage to the cables, the street lights should now continue to function as normal.

Street light problem on Manchester Road

For at least the last 24 hours, a run of street lights have been out on the bottom part of Manchester Road between Broomhill and the Shore Lane junction.

This has resulted in almost pitch black conditions for pedestrians as soon as darkness falls around 5pm. It is not known whether the problems have been caused by the recent works taking place along various points on Manchester Road.

Street Force has been alerted to the problem. Until it is resolved, pedestrians and drivers are advised to take extra care.

Manchester Road and Glossop Road reopen

The recent roadworks affecting Manchester Road, Broomhill and Glossop Road are complete, meaning that roads have now reopened.

The replacing of the gas mains meant that traffic could only travel one way through Broomhill and up Manchester Road. The Fulwood Road junction with Glossop Road had also been closed.

The roads reopened at around 10am on Monday 9 August. Fulwood Road between Ashdell Road and Manchester Road will remain one way into town until early September.

Improvements for pedestrians on Lydgate Lane

Work has started on changes to the pavements and crossing areas at the top of Lydgate Lane.

The road is being narrowed outside Lydgate Infant School ready for the installation of a zebra crossing.

Improvements to the Lydgate Lane end of Marsh Lane and Headland Drive are also underway, with markings on the pavements that hint at the dropping of the curbstones with tapered pavements at crossing points.

Dropped Kerbs were recently installed on the Watt Lane end of Cardoness Road to make crossing easier for pedestrians.

New traffic-slowing measures on Manchester Road

Two vehicle-activated signs have been installed near the Broomhill end of Manchester Road to help slow traffic.

The radar speed signs are located on both sides of the road near Tapton House Road and Tapton Mount Close. The idea is that they will slow cars down by making drivers aware when they are driving at unsafe speeds.

As well as showing drivers how fast they are going, the signs also display a happy face for vehicles travelling under the speed limit and a sad face for those exceeding it. The speed limit for this stretch of road is 30mph.

Manchester Road has been affected by the roadworks in Broomhill and is currently only open for traffic coming out of town.
