Christmas Bin Collections 2019

Waste and recycling collection dates over the Christmas Period

Before you put your black, blue and brown bins out over Christmas, check what day Veolia will be coming to empty them – as it might be different over the festive period.

Extra Waste and Recycling

Over the festive period, it is likely that you will produce lots of extra waste, including wrapping paper, Christmas cards, boxes, catalogues, glass and plastic bottles, biscuit/chocolate tins and lots more.

You can place small amounts of extra paper and card, tied in a bundle no bigger than your bin, next to your blue bin for collection.

Between 27th December and 23rd January ONLY they will collect extra tins, cans, and plastic bottles. Just put them inside a tied carrier bag next to your brown bin.
Any glass bottles or jars must be placed inside your brown bin; otherwise, your extra recycling will not be collected.

JUNE LITTER PICKERS OUT IN FORCE

sheffield litter pickersThe odd shower didn’t deter the twenty-five volunteer Crosspool community litter pickers, including a team from our local Spar, from recovering eighteen full bags of litter from our local streets.

Taking centre stage this month, the hero of the day was 5 years old Daniel, who with the help of his mom, managed to bag the most litter. A big Thanks to all this month’s helpers

Lydgate Junior School – Rights Respecting School

As part of their work as a “Rights Respecting School”, each year they launch a campaign to raise awareness about one particular issue.  In 2017 they campaigned to make the crossing outside their school safer and in 2018 they took part in the ‘Make Schools Safe’ campaign.Picture1

This year, their campaign aims to reduce the use of single use plastic in their school, their homes, in the local community and in their city. They are aiming to become a Plastic Clever School.

To learn more about becoming a Plastic Clever School visit the site set up by 2 inspirational young people; Kids Against Plastic. http://www.kidsagainstplastic.co.uk/

On Thursday May 23rd they are going on an awareness raising march through their local shops in Crosspool. The whole school will be marching together, carrying posters and banners to show their commitment to their campaign.

In addition to the march, all the children across the whole school have written letters to a wide variety of people asking for their support and urging them to consider their own use of plastics.

Disruption to black bin collections on Monday

An update from Sheffield City Council:

If your black bin is due for collection on Monday please put it out on Saturday 22 October instead (before 7am).

On Monday there is a one-day strike by some staff at our contractor Veolia Sheffield which means black bins won’t be collected. Please place recycling blue bins / boxes and green bins out as normal, however some may be collected later in the week.

All Household Waste Recycling Centres will remain open and collections should return to normal on Tuesday.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and will collect a small amount of side waste when we catch up on your black bins on Saturday 22 October.

We will provide service updates on our website at www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield and via Twitter @Recycle4Shef and @SheffCouncil.

For further information please call 0114 273 4567, 8am-6pm Monday to Friday.

Crosspool residents bring their trees for shredding and recycling

Thanks to everyone who brought their tree down for recycling on Sunday and made a small donation.

Shredding and recycling was carried out by our local tree specialist and firewood supplier Andy Fisher of Complete Tree Solutions.

The donated money went towards the recycling of the trees and the purchase of the new LED lights which could be seen on the trees in the precinct over Christmas.

A big thank you goes to all our local businesses for their continued support displaying the Christmas trees each year and also to the team of volunteers who helped put them up and take them down.

Thanks for all your Christmas trees

Andrew Fisher and his crew of volunteers worked tirelessly for an hour and half shredding Christmas trees this afternoon to raise funds for the Crosspool Forum.

Over 120 trees were left by residents outside Direct Travel, with quite a number being over 8ft tall.

Money raised will help provide hanging baskets and floral displays in the Crosspool precinct.

On behalf of all who have and will benefit from their kindness, a big big thank you to Andrew (Complete Tree Solutions) and to Paul at (Direct Travel) for the use of the car park.

Please reciprocate their kindness by supporting these local services.

Poll: would you like additional recycling facilities for plastics in Crosspool?

Would you like additional recycling facilities for plastics in Crosspool?

With the current system, the only plastics that you can recycle in Crosspool are plastic bottles. This can be done via your blue box/blue bin.

If you want to recycle other types plastic then the nearest sites are a drive away on Old Fulwood Road in Fulwood and in the University of Sheffield’s Endcliffe Crescent Flats complex.

Crosspool Forum is exploring the suggestion of having a plastics recycling bin in Crosspool. If the idea is popular then this is something we’ll raise with our local councillors.

Please can you take a minute to vote using the poll below to help gauge interest in a plastics recycling bin for Crosspool?

Manchester Road: recycling should be collected tomorrow

Crosspool households on Manchester Road and Ringstead Avenue are still waiting for their blue bins and boxes to be emptied today.

Veolia have advised that they should all be emptied tomorrow (Tuesday).

Two weeks ago there were also delays to Veolia’s recycling service, with 12 roads in our area not having their recycling collected on the scheduled day.

If your blue bin and box didn’t get emptied yesterday then it should be dealt with today, according to Veolia.

Problems with collection lorries on Monday meant that around 12 roads in our area didn’t have their recycling collected. If you keep your bin and box left out today they should get emptied.

Sheffield residents recently moved to fortnightly collections, alternating between black wheelie bins one week and blue recycling bins/boxes the other.
