Crosspool Centenary Walk charity fundraiser, 30 July 2011

Crosspool Centenary Walk: the three lads and Crosspool Tavern landlord Andy
Crosspool Centenary Walk: the three lads and Crosspool Tavern landlord Andy

On Saturday 30 July, three local tradesmen will embark upon the arduous task of completing a 100 mile non-stop walk around some of the region’s landmark beauty spots. The walk will encompass much of the Mayfield Valley, parts of the Peak District and Pennine Trail.

The purpose of the exercise is to raise funds for Weston Park Cancer Unit, with a target of £10,000.

Scott Graham, a local electrician and former British Tae Kwon Do champion will be joined by Andrew Fisher, a tree surgeon and Tom Faulkener, a builder to circumnavigate the route. It is expected to take the three men 30 hours.

The mammoth trek will begin at the Crosspool Tavern at midday. The route covers Ladybower, Strines, Midhope Reservoir, Dunford Bridge, Broomhead Reservoir, Dungworth, Rivelin Dam, Foxhouse and finishing back at the Crosspool Tavern.

Check points will be manned en route and members of the public are invited to join the walk from any one of the seven checkpoints. Scott suggests “the easiest stage will be on our return to the Tavern that is from the car park to the bar.”

The event is the brainchild of Scott, Andrew and Tom, as family members have, or are being treated at the Weston Park facility and they wish to pay tribute to the staffs’ professionalism.

It is envisaged the event will become an annual part of the Crosspool calendar, to raise funds for this worthwhile cause.

Donations should be made payable to Weston Park Cancer Charity with “100 mile walk” written on the reverse. Cheques may be sent directly to Weston Park or handed in at the Crosspool Tavern.

For further information and photographs of the team contact Scott Graham on 07970 597800 or joannegrahani@talktalk.net.

Man accidentally drives car into Sportsman pub

A driver accidentally drove his new Mercedes into a Crosspool pub last week.

After enjoying a meal at The Sportsman on Thursday 3 February, the man left the premises at around 6pm to drive home in the car he’d collected earlier that day from the motor dealer.

Apparently being unacquainted with the layout of the vehicle, he inadvertently engaged forward drive, rather than reverse, and shot forward through the walled bay window, causing extensive damage to the front of the building .

Fortunately no one was sitting near the window at the time, and the driver walked away shaken but uninjured.

The bay window adjacent to the disabled parking spaces at the front of the pub is now boarded up on both the outside and inside.

The Old Grindstone pub to reopen on 25 February

After years of uncertainty, including rumours of closure and demolition, the future of the Old Grindstone public house in Crookes seems safe, at least for the moment.

The owners, Greene King, are refitting the premises with a view to reopening on 25 February. With a banner on the pub promising ‘new food and drinks at great prices’, it seems that a more comprehensive food menu will be a feature of the relaunched pub.

Greene King has also applied for an extension in opening hours to provide alcohol and entertainment from 9am-12 midnight Sunday to Thursday and 9am-1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The application can viewed during office hours at the Licensing Department in the town hall.

Local pub facing demolition to make way for property development

A planning application (10/03887/FUL) has been submitted for the Hallamshire Hotel building on Lydgate Lane. It proposes that the former pub is demolished to make way for four dwelling houses, two apartments and detached garage block.

The planning, design and access statement (PDF, 515KB) for the application states:

There has been a succession of short term tenants, all of whom have failed to successfully operate a sustainable and profitable business. Clearly licensed use for this site is no longer the most viable form of operation.

The pub has been closed for several months now, with the windows boarded up.

Residents have until 25 January 2011 to comment on the application.

Our Cow Molly family bonfire, Saturday 6 November 2010

Crosspool families are invited to the Out Cow Molly bonfire from 2:30pm on Saturday at Cliffe House Farm in Dungworth.

The free event includes a fire engine which will be giving rides all afternoon to raise money for the fire museum, a barbecue serving Yorkshire highland beef burgers, hot drinks, a Bradfield Brewery bar and of course a big bonfire which will be lit at 5pm.

Cliffe House Farm was originally a dairy farm dating back to 1947. With the price of milk falling, in 2007 the family decided to diversify into dairy ice cream and Our Cow Molly was born.

Our Cow Molly currently supplies its excellent range of ice cream to outlets including Bamforth’s in Crosspool, The Three Merry Lads pub in Lodge Moor and Cream coffee shop in Broomhill.
