Passing of a Football Trailblazer

A somber moment as we reflect on the passing of Uriah Rennie, a true pioneer in football and a cherished figure at Hallam FC. His contributions to the sport and his commitment to fostering inclusivity will be remembered with deep respect.

Uriah Rennie

Uriah Rennie made a lasting impact on Hallam FC, both as a trailblazer in football and a dedicated supporter of the club. He became Honorary President of Hallam FC in 2010, coinciding with the club’s 150th anniversary. His leadership and guidance were deeply valued at Sandygate, where his presence and counsel helped shape the club’s direction.

Beyond Hallam FC, Rennie was a pioneer in English football, famously serving as the first Black referee in the Premier League, officiating over 300 matches. His influence extended into grassroots football, where he championed inclusion and community engagement.

His contributions to Hallam FC and the wider football community will be sorely missed, but his legacy as a leader, mentor, and advocate for diversity in sport will continue to inspire future generations.

Plough Inn’s Demise

Plough Inn

Today 10th January.2023 the demolition of the Plough Inn on Sandygate Road began.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year

To mark Queen Elizabeth’s record-breaking 70 years on the throne and the first British Monarch ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, the Crosspool Forum volunteers transformed the Crosspool Shopping Precinct into a sea of patriotic red, white and blue flags, bunting, floral displays, and hanging baskets.

The Heart of Crosspool

Scott Barton was the original person to trim the ivy on the wall of the Hallam football/cricket club in Sandygate Road into a heart..

Since then Jenny H with her very creative friend Jo and her mum Anne and pal Ian Knowles has created some 16 heart changes throughout the seasons, the latest being to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee. They have really enjoyed doing each one and are grateful for all the wonderful compliments, hoots, thumbs-ups, and smiles as people go past!

“love”

Spreading the love since 2018!
The Ivy Heart of Crosspool currently displays “love” in lights! “Happy Valentine’s”

Scott Barton, the original person to shape the Ivy Heart on the wall of the Hallam football/cricket club wall on Sandygate Road said, “Having driven past the ivy more than once, it struck me that with a bit of trimming it could be turned into a heart. I roped in my pal, Ian Knowles who lives nearby, and did the original trim on Christmas Eve 2018, in the hope that it would make people smile.”

Hearts of Crosspool

When, on Valentine’s night 2019, it was all lit up with red lights, Jenny Hill and her hubby noticed the Ivy Heart and thought how lovely it looked and stopped to take a photo. Then through the pandemic lockdowns, thinking it really needed some love, Jenny contacted Scott, and they set about sprucing it up, giving it some new lights and a positive “Chin up!!

Since then Jenny, joined by her very creative friend Jo and her mum Anne, have had such fun creating every one of the twelve-plus seasonal heart changes they have fashioned up to now.

Jenny, Jo & Anne, love looking after the ivy heart and really appreciate all the wonderful Compliments, Thumbs-ups, Hoots and Smiles people give as they go past!

THE PLOUGH AT RISK OF BEING DEMOLISHED

The Current owners of The Plough Inn, Sandygate Road (Spacepad Construction) has submitted an appeal against the refusal of planning permission for it to be demolished.

The Plough – Crosspool

In the main, the appeal documents restate the case made in the original application. Some of the key parts of their claims in their submission include:

“That despite the best efforts to secure the site, most of the damage to the site is due to vandalism and fly tipping by the public.
“The pub was not supported by the local community and that it is unviable as a pub due to lack of interest and customers”.
“That the £50,000 annual rent they advertised was reasonable in comparison to other similar pubs”.

If this part of Sheffield’s heritage is to be saved, the Planning Inspectorate needs to be made aware that the vandalism and fly tipping is NOT the reason that the site became such an eyesore.

Again, the need is to counter this appeal by demonstrating a high level of local support for this building of historic value.

A coordinated response is being compiled by the community campaign ‘Save The Plough’. Please send your, comments and views in a statement about how you or your community group have shown support for the pub, e.g. being willing to invest in community shares, or have observed building rubbish being dumped there, unregistered cars appearing on the site, frequent fires, etc. (Any photos, or knowledge of the rental values of other pubs would be really useful) Email: ploughsandygate@gmail.com

If you want to make your own comments directly to the Planning Inspectorate, you can email them:
west2@planninginspectorate.gov.uk
Please use reference: APP/J4423/W/21/3267944.
Include your name and address (you can ask this is not disclosed) and state clearly whether you are for or against the appeal.

The deadline is August 19th.

The deadline for comments is August 19th 2021.

Sheffield is the home of modern football and “The Plough” played a viral roll in the formation of the game. Demolishing a building with such a significant history would be a huge loss, not only to the Crosspool Community, but to the city as a whole.

Save the Plough and it’s Sporting Heritage .
