Crosspool Open Gardens is looking for new gardens

Crosspool Open Gardens 2011
Why not open up your garden as part of this year's Crosspool Open Gardens?

Crosspool Open Gardens sees proud local residents open up their private gardens to the public to raise money for charities.

This year’s event is on Saturday 7 July and marks the start of Crosspool Festival 2012. As well as a chance to look round many of the old favourites, the organisers are looking for new gardens to take part.

Participating gardens are featured in a Open Gardens paper programme. Profits from the sale of the programme are shared between charities nominated by participating gardeners, who can also raise funds themselves by selling plants and refreshments.

If you’re interested in putting your garden forward for consideration, contact Roger on 230 6194 and rogerkite40@tiscali.co.uk.

Two new floral tubs confirmed for Manchester Road

The space outside Crosspool Tavern where two new planters will be located

Two new planters will be installed at the former entrance to Crosspool Tavern on Manchester Road.

The location will allow for continued pedestrian access to the pelican crossing, the pub entrance and the pavement in front of the pub.

The tubs will be delivered with soil and planting already prepared and Crosspool Forum will take on their future maintenance. An exact date for their arrival has not yet been confirmed.

This former entrance to the Tavern’s car park was earmarked for landscaping as part of the S10 corridor scheme in 2005, although this has not yet happened. The two new floral tubs are expected to make access to the pelican crossing safer.

In 2010 and 2011 Crosspool received Sheffield in Bloom awards for the quality of our floral displays in the precinct.

Further break-ins at Hagg Lane allotments

Around 20 allotment plots at Hagg Lane were broken into on Thursday 15 December.

Padlocks were cut and smashed from both gates and sheds in order to steal property, according to The Hagg Lane and District Gardeners’ Allotments Society. The society’s website says:

We have again been advised to let as many people as possible know who have suffered individual theft/damage to contact the Police (telephone 101) so they can quickly link all the reports together.

No one else can report on a plot holder’s behalf and it is very important that everyone affected contacts them and gains a crime reference number to help build the full picture of the above incidents.

The incident last week follows a break in at the same allotments back in October.

Crosspool Beavers spring bulb planting

Beaver scout leader, Glenda de Brouwer has a motto “The sun always shines on our Beavers” and sure enough it did shine on the morning of Saturday 22 October on the grassy bank area, adjacent to the pelican crossing, close to the Crosspool Tavern.

Here the 36th Sheffield (St. John’s Ranmoor) Beaver Colony, based at the scout hut on Benty Lane, could be found beavering away, planting their allocation of a thousand crocus and daffodils provided by Sheffield City Council.

The bulb planting had been organised by assistant beaver Scout Leaders Tony Cheetham, (aka Badger) and ably accomplished with three leaders, three dads, two Beavers, two young leaders, two little brothers and one little sister.

Undoubtedly their very much appreciated hard work in making this significant contribution to improving the attractiveness of Crosspool will have enriched their lives and that of the community.

Many thanks for a job well done.
Ian Hague (Crosspool Forum Chairman)

Hagg Lane allotments theft: were you a victim?

Last Monday night, on 17 October, a number of plots on Hagg Lane, including the members’ trading hut, were broken into and a large amount of property taken.

South Yorkshire Police has advised allotment holders who have suffered individual theft/damage to report their story to the police (telephone 101) so they can link all the reports together.

No one else can report on a plot holder’s behalf and it is important that everyone affected contacts them and gains a crime reference number to help build the full picture of the incident.
