Lounge @ Crosspool will host Once Upon a Sensory Story (photo used with permission)
The organisers of Once Upon a Sensory Story invite all 0-5 year olds to come and join us in the telling of Going on a Bear Hunt on Tuesday 30 July from 2-3pm at Lounge @ Crosspool.
Sensory stories allow children to use all of their senses to help retell a story. For example, on the bear hunt the group will be running or crawling through swishy-swashy grass and paddling in the deep cold river, to name but two challenges.
Tickets cost £5 per child and include a snack and drink. Phone or text 07725 228 127 to book your place – hurry as places are limited and are selling fast.
The top half of Dransfield Road was closed on Friday afternoon to allow children to play out in safety on the street.
Four local mums were successful in their application for Sheffield’s first-ever ‘playing out’ session, which saw the road closed to traffic from the Barholm Road junction upwards, with stewarded access for residents.
Householders on the road were invited to come out to play or pop out just for a chat after school between 4pm and 5.30pm.
Over 30 children from Dransfield Road and neighbouring Barholm Road and Cardoness Drive enjoyed a fantastic afternoon.
One of the mums, Bron Ray, initiated the event after reading about a similar scheme in Bristol which encourages residents to close their roads for an hour or two. The scheme aims to provide local children with a rare opportunity to ride their bikes, kick a football and play chalk games in the street.
The event on Dransfield Road was a huge success and the residents are planning to reapply to the council to secure future Playing Out events for their children.
As one five-year-old said on the day, being allowed to play out on the road was ‘absolutely awesome!’
Deputy PM Nick Clegg at Crosspool street market today
Sheffield Hallam MP and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was in Crosspool today with his family on a visit the Selborne Road street market.
We spent a few minutes asking him about the street market, how often he is up in his constituency and his thoughts on some possible opponents at the 2015 general election.
Overall, the street market was a big success with stalls selling food, cakes, plants, crafts, jewellery, clothes and books. There was also music and dance from local schools and groups.
Residents watch a 51 pass the bus-themed well dressing outside Crosspool Tavern
Local residents gathered this evening in the midsummer wind and sun to celebrate the unveiling of Crosspool’s new well dressing.
Frances Eccleston dedicates Crosspool well dressing
Festival chair and St. Columba’s priest-in-charge Frances Eccleston led the short dedication outside Crosspool Tavern.
This year’s well dressing celebrates the centenary of the bus service through Crosspool. 1913 saw the introduction of the first omnibus to carry passengers in Sheffield. It linked the tram terminus at Broomhill to Lodge Moor and the countryside.
The old fashioned term ‘omnibus’ is derived from Latin and literally means for all, to everywhere. This was presumably because for the first time a public service vehicle could travel on any road and was not restricted by tram lines.
The well dressing was created by volunteers
Crosspool well dressing has been created by local volunteers and the materials provided by fund raising events and donations.
The dedication of the well dressing will be followed by a week of events in Crosspool celebrating the life of our community.
Thanks go to Valleyside Garden Centre and Ronaldo’s Hairdressing for their support in creating the well and Rivelin Valley Conservation Group Task Team for erecting the board.
Live ceilidh band Fine Fettle will play at the family barn dance on Saturday 6 July at St Columba’s church hall.
You can pick up tickets from Lounge@Crosspool or by calling 0114 267 0006 – adults £6, children under 16 £3.50. The price of your ticket includes a hot meal. Bring your own drinks, glasses provided.
Final preparations are underway for Crosspool’s annual Selborne Road street market on Sunday 30 June.
The event is your opportunity to buy local food, cakes, plants, crafts, jewellery, clothes and books and also enjoy music and dance from local schools and groups. Many of our local shops will also open up for the day.
During the market, Crosspool Art Group will be exhibiting in the garden at 55 Selborne Road. Teas will also be available.
And at this year’s market, Crosspool-based entrepreneur Nick Duggan of Sandygate Park Road will be launching his own range of t-shirts featuring Sheffield street names. The collection includes Carsick Hill Road, Mushroom Lane, Button Hill, Freedom Road and Commonside.
We’re pleased to confirm some details about Crosspool Summer Fayre, one of the highlights of our annual summer festival.
