Open Discussion Meeting to discuss convenience store planning application

Prior to the Sheffield City Council planning committee giving consideration to the proposed Lydgate Lane shop expansion plans, a further Open Discussion Meeting has been arranged for 6:30pm on Thursday 21 October in St Columba’s Church Hall.

The meeting has been arranged to make clear the impact the new development would have on local residents and the potentially profound effect on the character of the whole area and the wider commercial community.

Moreover and most importantly, approval from residents will be sought at the meeting regarding the arguments and issues that are proposed to be submitted to the planning board.

It is possible that the application will be considered at the 3 November planning meeting.

CDYST facilities upgrade: your ideas wanted

The Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) trustees are looking for suggestions from local residents for how the youth sports facilities might be upgraded in 2011.

The CDYST sports hall on Coldwell Lane was built in 1992 for use by individuals or groups requiring a base or hall for events. There is also a four-acre sports field for outdoor events such as sports matches or exhibitions.

The trustees are interested to hear how often residents use the CDYST facilities at the moment, what is in need of upgrading and what new equipment people would like to see.

Spring bulb planting this Saturday

Crosspool Forum is inviting local residents to join in with the planting of 1,000 crocus and 3,000 daffodil bulbs along Manchester Road.

If you can spare an hour and would like to come along, we’ll be meeting at 10am this Saturday, 2nd October, at the top of Hagg Lane, at its junction with Manchester Road.

The local Beaver group also has 1,000 crocuses of their own, which they are planning to plant in the shape of their emblem on the sloping verge which flanks the Manchester Road Pelican crossing’s tactile paved surface.

Hallam Community Skip: Tuesday 26 October

Following the success of September’s community skip, another is planned for Tuesday 26 October.

Local residents are being given the opportunity to use the skip, sited in the lay-by bordering the Hallam School playing fields on Redmires Road from 7am. It will be removed at 12:30pm sharp.

Please note, the skip is for household waste only. The following items will not be accepted:

  • fridges
  • freezers
  • gas bottles
  • asbestos
  • oil
  • car batteries
  • tyres
  • TVs
  • computers

The skip will be supervised at all times.

Computing courses at St Columba’s church hall

Two new computing courses started last Friday at St Columba’s church hall on Manchester Road.

The 12-week IT National College Introduction to ICT course is for beginners with no knowledge or just a basic knowledge of computers. It starts at 9am each Friday and is followed by a more advanced course at 11:45am.

Students are asked to pay just £30 for a 12-week course, with concessions for those on benefits.

Advanced students wishing to gain experience using the internet are also given the option of attending a course at a Foxhill computer suite taking place on either Monday or Thursday mornings.

Crosspool Open Gardens raises over £3,000 for charity

Twelve charities are to share the £3,300 raised from this year’s Crosspool Open Gardens on Saturday 3 July.

The annual event, which is co-ordinated by members of Stephen Hill Methodist Church, ran this year as part of the Crosspool Festival programme.

There were 15 gardens around the neighbourhood to explore, including allotments off Back Lane, two adjoining houses on Cairns Road and the Den Bank Close garden featuring a model railway.

One Manchester Road garden also accommodated an art sale, plus a book signing by local historian and author Judith Hanson. Plentiful supplies of tea and cake were also available at most of the gardens.

Open Gardens started as a fundraising event for the church’s development appeal but has now been extended to support charities nominated by the owner of each of the showcased gardens.
