Crosspool Festival 2015

Scarecrow competition at Crosspool Festival

A message from Rachel Suddrick, Sally Parkinson, Beckie Howe and Paula Stacy:

Dear families,

We would like to invite you to join in with the Crosspool Festival scarecrow competition.

The theme for the festival is ‘joy and happiness’ so we would like you as a family to make a scarecrow that represents something that makes your family happy and brings you joy. This might be a book or film character or a scarecrow playing a sport or taking part in a hobby.

All scarecrows need to be displayed on or in the front of your home, visible from the road. This might be in a window, a front garden or even on your door! You can make them as big or as small as you like!

They should be in place by 10am on Saturday 27 June and should remain in place throughout the festival. Each entry will be judged by local sculpture Noel Lockley at some point during the festival. Winners will be announced on Saturday 4 July at the festival Fayre.

If you would like to enter, please collect an entry form from Lounge@Crosspool and return it along with £3 by 12 June. All profits will be going to the two Lydgate Schools.

We hope you have great fun making your scarecrows together as a family and will enjoy spotting scarecrows around Crosspool during the festival week.

A list of roads on which we expect scarecrows to be displayed will be available to collect from Lounge@Crosspool from Saturday 27 July. If you have any further questions please call in at Lounge.

1st prize: Family pass to Magna
2nd prize: Tea and cake voucher for Lounge@Crosspool
3rd prize: Family craft tub

Local and city charities to benefit from festival donations

The two charities that will receive a share of any money made from this year’s Crosspool Festival are Care in Crosspool and Roundabout.

Care in Crosspool provides a befriending service for the elderly, organising regular visits to someone living on their own.

Roundabout is a local Sheffield youth housing charity providing shelter, support and life skills to young people.

Last year, £500 was raised for Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia and £500 was raised for community facility CDYST.

In 2013, £1,300 was shared between Weston Park Cancer Information and Support Centre and the 36th Sheffield Scout Group based on Benty Lane.

Crosspool Festival update: get involved!

The dates for the 2015 Crosspool Festival are Friday 26 June to Sunday 5 July.

Here’s the latest from the Crosspool Festival Committee:

Crosspool street market 2013
The street market will return in 2015

We hope to repeat many of the well-loved elements of festivals from previous years, plus a few new things! We will begin as usual with the blessing of the Magna Carta-themed well dressing on Friday evening, and Open Gardens on Saturday 27 June.

Plans for the street market on Sunday 28 June are well in hand. We are delighted to welcome the Sheffield Folk Chorale for a concert on Thursday 2 July.

Illustrated talks/book signing events have always proved popular and we have plans for a talk on a climbing/mountaineering theme as well as something on the Sheffield Blitz.

New for this year will be a family film show with crafts, and a photography competition for 11-18s. Rumours are afoot of a possible Abba evening , and other ideas are still being tossed around…and of course the Summer Fayre on the Coldwell Lane field will be the usual fixture on Saturday 4 July.

We’re grateful to the uniformed groups, local pubs and businesses and everyone else who have indicated their support – what makes the Crosspool Festival special is its genuinely local feel.

  • If you would like to help create the well dressing, please contact Pat Lintott on 0114 268 1161.
  • If you would like a stall at the street market contact Chris Bachelor on 0114 266 7842.
  • If you’d like to help with/book a stall at the Summer Fayre contact Steve Reynolds on 266 3473 or Ian Hague on 0114 230 7265.
