2020 Crosspool Scarecrow Competition Winners

Scarecrows entered for the 2020 community scarecrow competition celebrating all key-workers, were of a very high standard, making it challenging for the judges and the community to choose the winners.

After careful consideration scrutinising all the scarecrows entered, Magid Magid (past Sheffield Lord Mayor), – Lord Seb Coe, (past Tapton Student) – and members of the Crosspool community, chose the following winners and runners-up;

Prize winner chosen by Lord Coe was “The Ringstead Nurse”  Ringstead Crescent (created from logs),

Prize winner chosen by Magid Magid was “The Spaniard’s” SpongeBob” Cardoness Road (created from a straw bale),

Prize winners will receive credit provided by Dan Kirkland for The Crosspool Tavern or Crosspool Sportsman pub (for food ;-)), when they reopen.

Prize runners-up, chosen by the community were:-

First runner-up prize, “Boris” (Marsh Lane allotments) – voucher to spend at the Green Cross Chemist, Crosspool.

Second runner-up prize, “Granddad Bus Driver” (Cairns Road) – voucher for two fish & chip dinners from the Crosspool Fish Bar.

On behalf of the community of Crosspool, we would like to take this opportunity to give big ”Thank You” to both Michele Hatton & Dan Kirkland for  organising this year’s scarecrow competition, and also to express our gratitude to Lord Coe and Magid Magid for making the time in their busy diaries to support the Crosspool community by selecting this years winners.

Thank you to everyone who entered this year’s competition. The organisers hope that the variety of entertaining individual creations encourages everyone to enter next year’s competition.

Community Quilt

Throughout the recent lockdown, Amy Chambers has encouraged everyone to use their creative skills to stitch, draw, embroider, paint or print stamp on a square of cotton or lightweight material, to show how they were feeling during these extraordinary times.

Amy having a  vision of a  beautiful piece of history being made, has been amazed by everyone’s creativity and would like to take this opportunity to say a big “ThankYou” to  everyone who has taken the time to do one or more squares for the community Covid19 quilt which, although not as yet finished, is looking great.

Now that the lock down is beginning to ease slightly, a decision has been taken to make Friday 31st July the Last date to submit squares. This will  give Local residents, businesses, care homes schools/nurseries, who still wish to contribute their  piece of memorabilia to the quilt, the time to sew, paint, print, knit, crochet or draw on a square of any light weight fabric, 15x15cms leaving an internal 1cm border (So working area 14x14cm. These squares will then be sewn into the Community Quilt to complete a piece of memorable history for public display in the community.

Scarecrows have been Spotted

Crosspool Community Scarecrow Competition

Many thanks for the hard work of the families who have participated in this year’s Crosspool Community Scarecrow Competition and to everyone who, despite the Summer Festival having to be cancelled due to the government guidance on mass-gatherings, made this year’s competition happen.

The ideas and ingenuity actively employed on this year’s scarecrows were of the highest standard, making the decisions for the two judges very challenging.
This year, even though there are no scarecrows built by the schools or churches, closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, some thirty individuals’ registered scarecrow entries.

 If you can’t see your scarecrow in the gallery below, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We trust that everyone was entertained and inspired sufficiently enough to enter next year’s competition.

More Crosspool Shops Reopen

Direct Travel

Update on Opening hours for Direct Travel, Crosspool

Due to all the Covid19 related cancellations, Direct Travel have been working hard behind the scenes and closed doors to assist their Clients with re-arranging their holidays and making refunds.

Direct Travel is pleased to say ‘Their doors are now Open’ for new bookings.

They are currently working from 9.00 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and are fully compliant with the Government Guidelines with regard to Social Distancing.

Paul would like to thank their loyal customers so much for their ongoing support during these most troubled of times and for all their overwhelming kind wishes. Paul and his staff look forward so very much to seeing them all again.

Compliance on covid-19 Government guidelines to help stop the spread of virus:-

  1. to help with social distancing, a maximum of 2 customers in the shop at any one time
  2. staff operate a strict hygiene routine of regular hand washing wiping of surfaces and the wearing of gloves
  3. regrettably changing rooms obliged to be closed, Returned items are quarantined for 72 hours

Nest Cafe

Nest Cafe is now open for a limited takeaway service only.

Since they closed in March, they’ve taken the time out to redecorate, refresh and adapt Nest, ensuring they are covid19 compliant.
This means they’ll be operating in accordance with government Covid19 regulations, and for everyone’s safety, encouraging all customers to maintain social distancing with visual signage and to use the provided hand sanitiser stations.

Screening has been fitted to the counter and self-service work stations provided. Both will be cleaned regularly to protect both customers and staff

Customer numbers in Nest at any one time will be limited, so don’t be too offended if you’re asked to wait outside for a moment.

While preferring contactless payments, they appreciate that some may want to pay with cash, and that’s just fine.

Crosspool Shop Reopens

After twelve weeks of lock down another shop in the Crosspool precinct will reopen.

“Charisma” has informed us that it will be reopening from Tuesday 16th June, initially with the following revised opening hours:

Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 5pm;

Closed Sunday & Monday

Home deliveries available every day, except Thursday & Sunday

Do you Care?

Carers Week thanks the city’s unpaid carers

From the 8 June, it’s national Carers Week and a special time to thank all the unpaid carers who, young and old, care for someone in their family.

The person they care for may be at home, in hospital or in a care home – they might have a long term illness or a disability, a mental health condition or need extra help as they grow older.

Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers and every year Carers Week is held to raise awareness and highlight the challenges carers face.

A report from CarersUK published in April states that many unpaid carers are close to burnout because of the extra pressures on them during the COVID- 19 crisis.

In Sheffield, there are two organisations that support carers in the city- Sheffield Carers Centre that does everything it can to support adult carers and Sheffield Young Carers which supports carers who are aged 8 – 25.

Committed Community Volunteer

Crosspool Community Litter Picker picks up loads of rubbish.

To help ensure that our neighbourhood remains healthy and clean, volunteer Crosspool Community Litter Pickers, encouraged by the Sheffield council had, until the governments March lock down/ social distancing directive, regularly come together in the Crosspool Shopping Precinct on the first Saturday in the month, to remove discarded waste from our streets and open spaces.

While some of us may have taken our exercise with the odd walk or bike ride during the Corvid19 Pandemic, one local volunteer Litter Picker went that extra mile, singularly collecting 40 large bags of litter for disposal by the Sheffield cleansing department.

Among the booty of rubbish collected from the Tapton and King Edward lower school fields, shrubberies and undergrowth; were bottles, sweet and crisp packets, broken tennis rackets and umbrellas, discarded school clothing, asthma inhalers, dozens of tennis and golf balls and disappointingly only 17p in coins (donated to charity).

We can only hope that in the interest of everyone’s health and welfare, this volunteer’s tremendous efforts were not in vain and the school grounds remain waste and litter free.

A “Big Thank You” to this local volunteer for their much appreciated hard work.

SCARECROW SPOTTING

Take the Kids Scarecrow Spotting in Crosspool

As part of 2020 Crosspool Scarecrow competition, nifty scarecrows have today descended into the Crosspool area.

If you’re out and about around the Crosspool area over the next two or so weeks, you can have lots of fun scarecrow-hunting with the kids. You might be pondering as to where they have all come from.

As a cheery respite from Covid19 pandemic and a big big thank you to all Key workers, homeowners, community groups have been invited to make and display their own imaginative scarecrows.

Competition Scarecrows, judged by LORD COE and MAGID to be First, Second & Third prize winners, will be announced on Wednesday 24th June.

Crosspool Shops Partially Reopen

After ten weeks of lock down, to some extent, four more Crosspool shops will reopen tomorrow.

CROSSPOOL PET SUPPLIES
Following on from our telephone delivery service during the Covid19 Lockdown, I will now be reopening the shop from Monday 1st June.2020.

For the short-term I will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Thanks for your continued support!! Rob.
