Crosspool 2021 Summer Fayre Cancelled

Barney Baloney & Henry

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Julyโ€™s hugely popular Crosspool Summer Fayre has had to be cancelled for the second year running.

This yearโ€™s event was due to take place on Saturday 3rd July, but with current government COVID-19 restrictions on mass gathering now having been extended to the 19th July 2021; it is with deep regret and disappointment that we have to cancel the Fayre for the second consecutive year.

This annual event, organised by the Crosspool Forum volunteers would normally attract hundreds of people to the CDYST sports field, Coldwell Lane, to enjoy an afternoon of fun and entertainment for the whole family.

We realise that this will be a huge disappointment to those who usually visit the fayre, and to our loyal stall holdersโ€™, entertainers and exhibitors, especially after such a difficult year. However with our NHS and other public services predicted to be under significant pressure and public safety still our top priority, we know that residents and visitors will fully understand that regrettably having to cancel was unavoidable.

There are hopes that there is light at the end of the tunnel and things may get better.

Please keep your eye on this website and the notice board in the precinct as if allowed we hope to hold a smaller event at a venue in Crosspool.

Nature Photographers

Nature photographers are invited to give it their best shot

Amateur nature photographers of all ages are being invited to enter a prestigious competition run by conservation science charity the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT).

โ€œThe Julian Gardner Awards allows us to showcase the best images of the UK countryside, from the landscapes and wildlife to the people who live and work there,โ€ said James Swyer, awards judge and press & publications manager at the GWCT. โ€œThe competition is in its eighth year,โ€ continued James, โ€œand every time we are amazed by the talent out there. We’d love to see lots of entries of Yorkshire’s beautiful scenery and wildlife.โ€

The awards are open to amateur photographers only.  There is an adult and junior category. Entries must be submitted by 30 June 2021.

โ€œWhether nature photography is a new hobby turned to during lockdown, or something you have been enjoying for many years, we would love to see the results,โ€ said James. โ€œWe are looking forward to seeing lots of inspiring images, perhaps taken on a local walk, in a nearby park, or in your own back garden.โ€

The 2020โ€™s competition was won by Jenny Hibbert from Port Talbot, who has had a lifelong interest in wildlife photography. Her stunning image of an encounter between two hares in the Cairngorms instantly appealed to the judges and won against stiff competition.

Remarkably, 16-year-old Katy Read from Newcastle triumphed in the junior section for the second year in a row, with a photograph capturing a robin fluffing out its feathers against the cold.

The competition was launched in memory of Julian Gardner, a Sussex farmer and lifelong supporter of the GWCT, who was tragically killed while defending his property in October 2010. A donation from Julianโ€™s family and friends funded two trophies, which are presented to the winners to display for the next year, along with prints of their award-winning photos.

The competition is open to all amateur photographers and is related to the GWCTโ€™s research and advisory work โ€“ taking in all aspects of the UK countryside, including the people who live and work there, game, wildlife, all the various habitats and of course landscape.

There are two categories:

  • Adult section โ€“ The winner will be awarded the GWCT Julian Gardner trophy โ€“ a sculpture of a hare.
  • 16 and under section – The winner will be awarded the GWCT Julian Gardner junior trophy – a sculpture of a leveret

Closing date for entries: 30 June 2021.

To support wildlife and protect the natural environment, a Sheffield councillor has campaigned to give residents the power to manage and maintain grass verges and small green spaces.

It is hoped that If residents are prepared to see more of this rather than plain cut grass, wild flowers and the insects that dependant on them will thrive.

Improve Your Health Through Exercise

As the current pandemic regulations are eased and we begin to come out of lock down, the Crosspool Forum recognises that maintaining physical fitness and mental alertness is now perhaps more crucial than ever. ย To help ensure that we all make the most of the situation and we make an effort to follow the NHS exercise advice and guidance, to keep fit and healthy, we plan to restart both our Easy Exercise and Tai Chi classes.

Easy Exercise

Easy Exercise is a chair based exercise aimed at people who wish to either maintain or increase their Independence, with exercises to strengthen muscles and bones. Stronger muscles help to improve circulation balance and walking, making every day activities such as washing, dressing, shopping or doing house work easier and less of a strain.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a slow physical exercise ideal for improving relaxation, balance and overall health. These sessions are great for beginners and can really help you improve your strength and balance.
You donโ€™t need any specific clothing; just wear something youโ€™re comfortable in and non-marking footwear.

No need to book; simply come along to the Scout Hall, on Benty Lane, Crosspool.

  • Easy Exercise Class:
Tuesday mornings 10:45 -11:45 from the Tuesday 8th June 2021
  • Tai Chi Class:
Wednesday mornings 10:45 -11:45 from the Wednesday 7th July 2021

Street Trees

Further consultations on decisions relating to street trees are now open, giving residents the chance to have their say on street trees across the city.

Two further online consultations are available on the council’s consultation hub, CitizenSpace, until 8 June 2021.

The Sheffield Tree Partnership has developed a draft, Sheffield Street Tree Partnership Working Strategy.ย  This sets out our commitment to explain to local residents the reasons behind decisions to remove trees, and provide the opportunity to challenge these decisions through an open and transparent process.
