SCHOOLS CLIMATE ASSEMBLY – A CALL TO ACTION

Chris Packham addresses over 1400 students and teachers at the Schools’ Climate Assembly held at King Edward VII School.

On the 20th of October 2022, over 1400 students and over 45 schools from across the country met at King Edward VII School for the second-ever Schools Climate Assembly. Chris Packham’s passionate words fell upon young ears as he tip-toed the fine line between the harsh reality of global rising temperatures and the hope and determination that young people must share in order to fight it.

Edward VII Students Take Climate Demands To The Heart of Government
Their visit to Downing Street coincided with the start of the COP 27 conference in Egypt. This means that they had a unique opportunity to make real change, and possibly influence the talks and decisions of world leaders at COP 27; a chance for young people to make an impact on a global scale.

Sheffield Councillor Shortlisted for National Climate Leader Award

Minesh Parekh, Councillor for Crookes and Crosspool, has been shortlisted for the best ‘Locally Elected Leader Award’ in the national Green Heart Hero Awards.

The Green Heart Hero Awards are organised by The Climate Coalition, the UK’s largest climate organisation. The Climate Coalition is a group of over 140 organisations—including the National Trust, Women’s Institute, Oxfam and RSPB—who together represent over 22 million people across the UK.

These prestigious awards are an opportunity for constituents to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary actions individuals, communities and organisations are taking to create a cleaner, greener world.

Cllr Parekh was one of four Councillors to be shortlisted for the award, alongside Liberal Democrat Councillor Pippa Heylings of South Cambridgeshire, Edinburgh Scottish National Party Councillor Adam McVey; and Donna Stimson, Conservative Councillor in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Parekh was the only Labour Councillor to make the shortlist for the national award.

Cllr, Minesh Parekh, taken by Jack Owen

He was shortlisted for his work on Sheffield City Council, including successfully proposing a Community Wealth Building Charter for the city, proposing amendments to unpick procurement barriers faced by co-operative and community energy providers, and in taking an international approach to climate justice, writing for the Ecologist about the need for climate reparations to be paid to Pakistan.

Parekh said:

“It’s an honour to have been nominated for a Green Heart Hero Award, let alone shortlisted. I stood for election as a climate activist, committed to Labour’s Green New Deal, wanting to do everything possible I can to tackle the climate crisis. To me that means recognising that climate justice is inseparable from social and economic justice; the only solutions are those that also end inequality.

“I’m particularly proud in my work alongside Sheffield’s Labour Councillors in delivering Community Wealth Building policies—redirecting wealth back into Sheffield’s economy, and giving priority to local and sustainable businesses—has been championed by the residents that nominated me, as I think this is the best weapon local authorities have in our arsenal to build a greener, fairer future.”

Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, added:
“Minesh has made a flying start as a Councillor since being elected last May.
“He has worked hard to put Sheffield Labour’s Local Election Manifesto into action – with the climate crisis at the top of the political agenda, and in a way that centres workers’ voices and focuses on tackling inequality, and it’s great to see this being recognised through the Green Heart Hero Awards.”

Leading Charity Warns Against the Risk of Unregistered Appliances

Householders who own unregistered appliances could be putting themselves and their loved ones at risk of serious injury and death, warns leading accident prevention charity, the Royal Society of Accident Prevention and the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances.

The alert comes during Register My Appliance Week which runs from the 23rd to the 27th of January. By registering a domestic appliance with the manufacturer, people can be informed of any recalls or safety issues as quickly as possible and reduce the risk of tragic incidents like fires and explosions.

To register your device, visit www.registermyappliance.org.uk.

Ashleigh Martin, Public Health Advisor at the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA):

“With such busy lives, it’s only natural not to have domestic safety at the top of our to-do lists. But a simple action like registering your appliance as soon as you’ve purchased it can help prevent against unnecessary tragedies. By registering your appliances in a timely manner, you can be among the first to hear when there is a potentially life-saving product recall.”

AMDEA CEO Paul Hide, said: “We urge anyone with unregistered appliances – whether brand-new, a pre-used buy or installed a while ago – to register all their appliances so they can be contacted in case of any safety notifications, repairs or recalls. Most manufacturers accept registrations of machines up to 12 years old, and there’s no need for proof of purchase. It’s completely free and easy to do – it’s a win-win for keeping your home safe and possibly increasing the life span of your machine.”
