The next spring art exhibition by artists from Hallam Art Group takes place later this month.
From 10am-5pm on Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 March you can view pieces by the group at Hallam Community Hall.

Two new floral tubs confirmed for Manchester Road
Two new planters will be installed at the former entrance to Crosspool Tavern on Manchester Road.
The location will allow for continued pedestrian access to the pelican crossing, the pub entrance and the pavement in front of the pub.
The tubs will be delivered with soil and planting already prepared and Crosspool Forum will take on their future maintenance. An exact date for their arrival has not yet been confirmed.
This former entrance to the Tavern’s car park was earmarked for landscaping as part of the S10 corridor scheme in 2005, although this has not yet happened. The two new floral tubs are expected to make access to the pelican crossing safer.
In 2010 and 2011 Crosspool received Sheffield in Bloom awards for the quality of our floral displays in the precinct.
Easter rugby camp at Tapton school
Newly-formed rugby union club Hallamshire RUFC is running an Easter rugby camp on 2-3 April on Tapton school playing fields. It is aimed at children between 6 and 14 years old from the surrounding areas.
Organiser Matt Akers said: “Our aim is to give a fun day based around rugby union and promote enjoyment within the game. If any youngsters are then interested we hope to offer them a chance to play through our newly set up youth system.”
The RFU is backing the day and are offering local community coaches to assist in the day’s events. The club’s members are CRB-cleared and have coaching badges.
Crosspool worker is sales person of the year
Next time you’re filling up at Crosspool’s Jet petrol station, pass on your congratulations to Val Taylor.
Val has been awarded Sales Assistant of the Year in recognition of her efforts of going the extra mile when helping customers.
The manager of the petrol station, Stella Lucas, commented: “Val is an absolute pleasure to work with; she has the patience of a saint and nothing is too much trouble when it comes to helping our customers. She contacts the local garage if customers have car problems and offers helpful directions if anyone is lost. Val takes the greatest pride in her work by arriving early and keeping the forecourt clean, plus she is always dressed immaculately.”
No-one hurt in armed robbery at Co-op Travel in Crosspool
Three masked men held up Co-op Travel in Crosspool on Friday night.
At around 5.20pm the robbers, one of them carrying what is believed to be a shotgun, burst into the shop and threatened staff. Thankfully, no-one was hurt during the incident, but staff were left very shaken by their ordeal.
Witnesses say the robbers left the scene with currency of different denominations, leaving a trail of bank notes in the precinct.
They made their escape in a white Seat getaway car, which was later torched on Rivelin Park Drive.
Police cordoned off the area around the shop until around 8.30pm on Friday night. Detectives investigating the robbery want to hear from anyone who has any information, and urge them to come forward and contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 942 of 24 February 2012, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The incident in Crosspool follows a similar robbery in Bradway at another branch of Co-op Travel last December.
Manchester Road water mains repair to take one month
The South West Community Assembly website reports on some upcoming roadworks on Manchester Road which will cause some disruption. They are due to start on 27 February 2012:
Yorkshire Water will be carrying out at Manchester Road, Sheffield.
This work is being carried out as part of our ongoing schemes to renew water mains throughout Yorkshire in order to help prevent bursts and boost the drinking water quality. This work consists of renewing a section of 4 inch cast iron water main at Manchester Road between Fulwood Road and Tapton House Road which will take approximately one month to complete.
We will be starting work 27 February 2012 at the Junction of Tapton House Road, progressing towards the junction of Sale Hill using 2 way traffic lights for safety. The work between Sale Hill and the junction of Fulwood Road will only be carried out on Sundays or during school holidays using 3 way traffic lights for safety. Traffic lights will be manned at peak times to aid with traffic flow.

New ticket machines on 51 buses
New ticket machines and tickets have arrived on the 51 bus serving Crosspool.
The new machines issue new-style of paper ticket and are also expected to be part of First’s plans to offer contactless payment for passengers.
This means that you’ll be able to wave a pre-pay card, or debit/credit card in front of the machine to pay your fare. The new system will also have the capability to accept payment via mobile phone.
It doesn’t look like the new contactless payment systems aren’t yet active on the 51 route, so in the meantime you’ll still receive a paper ticket when paying by cash.

Weekend snow affects roads in Crosspool
Snow arrived in Crosspool on Saturday afternoon, causing problems on local roads and delays to public transport services.
Major roads were gritted in preparation for the snowfall, which was over 10cm deep on some areas by the morning.
By Sunday afternoon the 51 bus service was back to normal and most of the main roads through Crosspool were passable. However, surface snow and ice on side roads were continuing to cause trouble for cars, with evidence of at least one minor accident in the neighbourhood.
The thaw appears to have already started and no further snow is forecast over the next few days. However, as temperatures remain low, any lingering snow and surface water may turn to ice so drivers and pedestrians are advised to take care – particularly on Crosspool’s hilly roads.
Do also check up on your neighbours who may feel isolated and vulnerable during the bad weather.

35+ Crosspool residents, our three local councillors (Sylvia Anginotti Brian Holmes & Geoff Smith) and 8 members of the forum management committee, attended. Five Guest speakers gave presentations as follows:
Local Land release Consultation

In order to fulfil its obligations to the Government, with regard to releasing Brownfield land for houses as Yorkshire Water has decommissioned Lydgate Reservoir (off Evelyn Rd), Hadfield Service Reservoir & Canterbury Crescent, the Council is seeking residents views on allowing these sites (among others throughout the city) to be developed for housing.
Two drop –in sessions – Thurs 2nd Feb (3pm-8prn) at Stephen Hill Methodist Church, and Fri 3rd Feb (2pm-7pm) Hallam Primary School- have been arranged for viewing the consultation documents. Comments to Planning in writing please, – emails, online via Sheffield City Council, or by post.
Police report
PC Louise Atha said that in April the boundaries will be changing, so she and her colleagues from Broomhill SNA will be dealing with Crosspool and Lodge Moor – from the bottom of Manchester Rd west (- with Broomhill itself becoming part of the city centre-). She reported on more Allotment break-ins and the re-opening of Operation Herbaceous to deal with this.
There are still Scrap-metal dealers cruising about, she is able to prosecute those without licences. There have been a few burglaries in the Sandygate area -with the object being to steal car keys and thus the cars. Please ensure you keep your property locked!
PCSO Garry Hizam showed a new device, the Hermes unit (laptop & scanner) which will allow any mobile unit to scan possibly stolen mobile phones etc. and return them to their registered owners. The Police Box on Lydgate Lane will be open for people to bring their mobiles etc in for registration – 9th Feb (6pm-7pm).
Queries from the floor included speeding cars – March Lane & Lydgate Lane, evening doorstep cold-callers (legitimate?) and a local mugging incident. PC Louise Atha was eager for any incident on any of the above to be reported to her immediately.
The Internet & Personal Safety
PC Joy Price, (Children & Young Persons Officer, Broomhill SNA) spoke about the dangers of social networking sites, and parental responsibilities to ensure all possible locks, safeguards and filters are active on their home computers and other internet devices – such as X boxes, Wii and Play Stations. She felt Blackberry phones in particular were very dangerous and should not be in children’s’ hands.
The sorts of slight disagreements which used to mean a brief verbal argument and short-lived physical tussle at school are now carried out online, by anonymous/authored verbal abuse, which ends up as a vicious circle that can’t easily be stopped. Parents must ensure under-13s cannot start a Facebook account, and do not post personal & intimate details about themselves – and photos too – on line. The internet is a candy-shop for paedophiles, as well as giving violent partners and estranged parents a means of access to their ex’s and kids.
Certain sites such as Chat Roulette or Formspring are to be avoided at all cost, and parents were urged only to use reputable websites such as those the BBC links to, for homework etc. The grooming of unsuspecting youngsters, and radicalization of young people in the` security’ of their own bedrooms was touched upon, and Joy concluded by saying we must remember the internet is another street, where you have to watch your back.
Councillors Questions
Geoff Smith is still trying to get an answer out of SYPTE with regard to the Vernon Terrace bus shelter. There is no more money for further micro-asphalting of local pavements so it is awaiting the start of the PFI Highways Initiative.

Ian Hague reminded people of the: Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. (To mark this historic occasion, thanks to funding from the South West Community Assembly, the support of Norton Nurseries,  and the hard work of the Crosspool Forum, arrangements have been made for Patriotic Flags, Flower Tubs & Hanging Baskets to adorn the Crosspool shopping precinct over the summer months). Car boot sale Saturday 16th June. Crosspool Festival Week 7th to 15th July. Coach trip in April for the Over-60s to visit the new Mediacity studios at Salford Quays.
