Plea from CDYST trustees to dog walkers

Dog walkers have been asked to clear up after their dogs when using the Coldwell Lane CDYST pitch and surrounding ground.

The trustees of Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) and Crosspool Juniors Football Club report an increase in the amount of dog mess not being collected, bagged and taken home.

Trust secretary Mrs Gillian Drinkwater explained: “This is a serious issue of great concern to everyone in the local community, especially in view of the number of children who use the area. The trustees would like to point out this is private ground and we might have to consider closing the site to dog walkers if the problem continues.”

Consultation on additional school places for Crosspool children

Sheffield City Council cabinet has agreed that residents should be consulted on providing additional school places at Hallam Primary school for children from Crosspool.

Crookes Councillor Geoff Smith explains: “For 2012 entry there were not enough places at Lydgate and some childen went to Hallam or Westways. There was not a problem this year but it is likely that there will be too many children for Lydgate in 2014 and in subsequent years. Expanding Lydgate is not a feasible option as it has a four-form (120) entry already and it is not physically possible or educationally desirable to increase the entry.

“Shortage of primary school places is a national and a Sheffield problem. In Sheffield we are building some new schools in the areas with the highest population growth. Crosspool is not one of the worst affected areas and, anyway, it would be very difficult to find a suitable site for an additional school in Crosspool.”

The consultation, which was agreed at the meeting last week, will run 26 September-7 November. We’ll post more details on it as soon as we know more. Consultation information will also be sent to schools and nurseries.

Loxley Silver Band will play Last Night at the Proms celebration on Saturday 21 September to celebrate 100 years of Tapton Hill Church in its present building.

Last Night of the Proms traditionally includes patriotic numbers such as Land of Hope and Glory, Rule, Britannia! and Jerusalem.

The event at the church starts at 7.30pm and tickets, which include refreshments, are available for £6 from 07971 408809 or 0114 230 8191.

Crosspool WI subscription deal for new members

Crosspool Women’s Institute is open looking for new members.

Now is a good time to sign up, as you can currently get a subscription of 15 months for the price of 12 for October onwards.

September’s first meeting takes place tonight, Monday 16 September from 7-9pm at St Columba’s Church with a talk by Gill Upham, titled Homeopathy: the Facts.

Then on Monday 23 September from 1-3pm at Stephen Hill Church, Peter Machan tells the tales of Charlie Peace and other Sheffield villains.

Crosspool restaurant Artisan put up for sale

Artisan is up for sale

Crosspool’s Michelin Guide-endorsed restaurant Artisan has been put on the market by owners Brewkitchen.

Richard Smith, BrewKitchen chef director, said: “We have developed the BrewKitchen brand significantly during the last 12 months and feel that Artisan no longer fits the profile.

“It is, and always has been, a successful restaurant and a pleasure to run – operating it for almost 20 years with buoyant sales and continued popularity is testament to that.

“Our decision to sell comes knowing it best lends itself to being an owner-run establishment – there’s plenty for someone to get their teeth into, as I experienced when I was in the kitchen.”

BrewKitchen has expanded significantly in the last year, opening Graze Inn on Ecclesall Road and launching Jack Baker’s Brasserie at The Beauchief. The group plans on turning  The Brasserie into their flagship Sheffield outlet.

The King’s Head pub reunion, 2 November 2013

Did you ever used to visit The King’s Head pub in Crosspool before it was demolished?

On Saturday 2 November, a get together is being organised for anyone who used to be a regular at the pub in the 70s, 80s or 90s.

Go along to the Crosspool Tavern from 8pm to join in the reunion and meet old friends, share memories and have a laugh.

Crosspool off license ceases trading

The Crosspool branch of World of Wine/Bargain Booze ceased trading last weekend after nearly three years in the precinct.

It opened as usual on Saturday 31 August but was cleared out by Sunday morning on 1 September.

The off license opened in September 2010 following the closure of Oddbins in the same unit.

This leaves two shop units currently empty in the precinct, with Co-op Travel also shutting its Crosspool branch last month.

Police respond to concerns over future of neighbourhood policing

An update from Councillor Geoff Smith following his letter to the Police and Crime Commissioner last month.

Following the Crosspool Forum meeting in July I wrote to the Police and Crime Commissioner, and various Sheffield police commanders about concerns that had been expressed about the future of neighbourhood policing.

I have been contacted by one of those I wrote to, Inspector Deborah Pickering, who is responsible for policing in the south west of Sheffield. She was unable to give me any definite information at this stage but she did make a number of comments.

First she said that South Yorkshire Police is fully committed to neighbourhood policing with local police constables and police and community support officers responsible for a particular area and known in the locality.

Second she referred to the closure of Crewe Flats where our neighbourhood police officers are based at present. She said that because of cuts to the policing budget there was some rationalising of police stations with some closing. She said that it was almost certain that Crewe Flats would close with a likely closure date of early January.

She also said that she was committed to police officers being based within reasonable distances of where they were working but could not at the moment say where police officers for Crookes and Crosspool would be based. She seemed sympathetic to my view that Woodseats would be too far away.

I will be meeting Inspector Pickering in September when I hope to be given some more definite information which I will report.
