Resurfacing of the Gladstone Road to Manchester Road section of Fulwood Road will begin on Monday 21 March and is expected to last about two weeks. The work will take place 7pm to 7am.
The next Crosspool Forum Open Meeting will take place on Friday 6 May, starting 7pm at St Columba’s church.
The meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday 5 May but has been moved due to the local election taking place that day.
The confirmed dates for the 2016 festival are Friday 24 June-3 July, with the Summer Fayre scheduled for Saturday 2 July.
Here’s an update on this year’s festival from the organising committee:
This summer we have entitled the festival Carnival a summer party with great activities happening on the streets to coincide with this year’s Olympics in Brazil, the queen’s 90th celebrations and more besides.
We hope it will be a colourful and exciting week for the community to get out and about, meet the neighbours, make new friends and try new activities.
Some of the old favourites return such as Open Gardens. Why not share your garden this year? No one expects an immaculate garden, but we all enjoy looking at what each one of us has been doing on our patch.
It’s a great way to be motivated to tidy up your garden and a good time to invite the neighbours round to share a hobby or a fabulous view over a cuppa. And you can make a bob or two for your favourite charity as all proceeds will go to the charities of your choice.
So whatever the size and maturity of your garden, whether you are a beginner or have been opening your garden for many years, if you would like to join the gardeners open day, please get in touch. We will need your name and details by Friday 18 March 2016 in order to prepare the brochure for printing.
Talking about all things in the garden, we would love to hear from you if you would enjoy some sort of gardeners’ community to be formed. We are thinking of gathering together like minded people to enjoy a natter, a helping hand or a word of advice a couple of times a year

Also coming again is the popular scarecrow competition. Entry forms will go out through the schools and will also be available from the shops at £3/entry. Scarecrows will be on show all week and will be judged by local sculptor, Noel Lockley. Prizes will be awarded to the best scarecrow makers in recognition of their ingenuity and creativity.
The competition theme is Carnival and Olympics to fit in with the festival theme, so bright and colourful like the amazing costumes some of the carnival goers wear, fantastical animals, sportsmen or something completely different – have fun with that! Another great activity that is now established is the well dressing. In case some of you don’t know what this is, a well dressing is the unique Derbyshire tradition of elaborate pictures made for the most part of individual flower petals pressed onto clay covered boards which seems to date from Victorian times to celebrate the blessing of water in any given village.
Why do it in Crosspool? It is a great opportunity to be creative with flowers and to celebrate life itself in our community. So if you are looking for a new venture, why not try your hand at this old craft? The team is looking for new helpers. Instructions given, so no need for previous experience. Just a few hours the week before the festival is needed to be involved in this. If you want further information, get in touch.
We are also looking for a few more volunteers to help with a new history activity, a new photo competition and general helpful bits and pieces. No previous experience necessary. If you think you could spare a few hours to help or would like further information, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Bus services from Crosspool to Castleton and Bakewell could be drastically reduced from October 2017.
Derbyshire County Council is considering several options in order to save money, with one of them being to withdraw all county council funding for subsidised buses from October 2017. This means that unless they can be run commercially they will stop.

A 34-year-old man is currently in hospital in a life threatening condition after the car he was travelling in crashed into a wall in Crosspool.
At around 10.45pm last night (Sunday, 6 March), the man was driving a blue Ford Puma along Sandygate Road towards Crosspool, when he was in collision with the kerb and is believed to have lost control of the car, close to the junction with Hallam Chase.
The car then rolled and was in collision with a wall, throwing him from the car.
He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have been in the area at the time is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 1136 of 6 March 2016.

A long-running dispute over parking in the residential area near Claremont Hospital has moved closer to being resolved.
Staff from the hospital have been leaving their cars on nearby roads leading to claims by residents of blocked driveways and on one occasion an ambulance being denied access because of double parking.
The residents’ case was taken up by local councillors Anne Murphy and Geoff Smith who have fought a near two-year battle to end the disruption.
Now a range of off-road parking places are being provided for staff by the private hospital on Sandygate Road.
Councillor Murphy said: “The problem is that there is no staff parking on the hospital site and some staff were moving across the road and parking on Sandygate area roads, which is a really lovely residential area.”
“Parking on grass verges, parking across driveways, even on a driveway in one case. An ambulance was stopped from getting through by double-parked cars. The residents had a lot of problems.”
Following representations by councillors Murphy and Smith and the residents, the hospital management arranged for staff parking at the nearby Crosspool and District Youth Sports Trust and at the Masonic Hall, in Crosspool, with park-and-ride service.
Some staff refused to use the places but a meeting with councillor Murphy and residents at the hospital alerted the management to the problem.
Now the hospital is to provide extra spaces at The Plough on Sandygate Road.
Councillor Murphy said: “There’s now no reason for staff to park in the Sandygate area. There may still be some parking by hospital visitors or patients at times but hopefully this should be an end to staff all-day parking.
“It has been more than been 18 months and three meetings with the hospital but it now seems that we have achieved something that will help the residents and provide parking for hospital staff.
“We have made the hospital management take us and the residents seriously.”
A Crosspool man has been charged with the murders of two women at a house in Shirebrook, Derbyshire.
Christopher Whelan (20) will appear at Chesterfield Justice Centre today, charged with the murders of Julie Hill and her mother Rose Hill at a house in Station Road on Thursday, February 25.
Police and paramedics were called to the house at about 10.10pm on Friday, February 26. The bodies were found inside.
Ms Hill (51) lived at the address while her 75-year-old mother lived in Sheffield. Mr Whelan, of Dransfield Road, Sheffield, was arrested the day after the discovery.
Ms Hill’s dog, thought to be a terrier, is missing from the house.
Anyone with information, or anyone who knows the whereabouts of the dog, should call police on 101, quoting incident number 728 of February 26, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Local residents have been in contact with local councillors and council candidates, as well as raising the issue at Crosspool Forum, to express their views that the stretch of Manchester Road through Crosspool should have a speed limit of 30mph rather than the current 40mph.
Two of our councillors believe it would be safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers/passengers in a residential area and that it would have no discernible impact on the overall time of car journeys through Crosspool and into the city.
They recognise that the council has many requests for traffic measures, and that funding cuts mean that it can only undertake a limited number each year. However, they accept in principle that there should be a reduction in the speed limit and ensure that it is considered seriously for early implementation.
