Household waste survey

Have your say on household waste by filling in this council questionnaire before it closes on Friday 16 September:

We want you to tell us what’s important to you for your waste collection services and what you think our priorities should be over the next few years when we need to make savings. You might have strong opinions about how your waste and recycling is collected in the future. Whatever your feelings, let us know, and we can take your views into account when making future decisions about waste services in Sheffield.

You can take part in the survey by:

  • filling it in online
  • calling 0844 522 0100
  • collecting a copy from your local First Point Office, Housing Office or library.

Tapton academy deal could be signed by Monday

A funding deal to transform the status of a Crosspool school into an academy could be signed as early as Monday.

Today’s Sheffield Telegraph covers the story on its front page.

A meeting for parents only took place on Tuesday at the school. Concerns have been raised by parents, councillors and education officers over the consultation process.

Teachers at Tapton are against the move, fearing that becoming an academy will not raise educational standards.

Governors feel such a move would be in the school’s best interest, allowing them to balance the books by negotiating better value services.

South West Community Assembly public meeting on Thursday

The next formal public meeting of the South West Community Assembly is on Thursday 23 June 2011 at Totley Primary School, starting at 7pm.

Agenda Items include:

  • Green and Open Space/ Community Project Officer Priorities
  • South West Community Assembly Highways Report

The meeting will be preceded by a presentation on the Forge Dam masterplan at 6pm. The main meeting starts at 7pm.

In a bid to save £1.4 million from the budget, Sheffield City Council is to drastically cut back its mobile library service.

Currently the mobile library makes weekly visits in Crosspool to Benty Lane and Watt Lane (twice), plus monthly visits to Moorbank Road Flats and Tapton Hill Road.

Under the new proposals, the Crosspool service will be reduced to a single weekly visit to Watt Lane and a monthly visit to Moorbank Road Flats.

You can have your say on the cuts as part of a consultation exercise.

Comment on convenience store planning appeal before Wednesday 26 January

The window for residents to comment on the appeal for the proposed convenience store on Lydgate Lane in the premises currently occupied by Motor World closes on Wednesday 26 January.

The detail is in the document. If you read it you will see that the appeal:

  • challenges the council to demonstrate that the extension would cause any detriment to pedestrian or traffic safety and the free flow of traffic
  • will show that the perceived level of harm is not so great as to warrant the refusal of the development in terms of:
    1 – the need for further car parking in a local centre and whether the lack of off-street parking will lead to an increase in street parking in the immediate locality to the detriment of road users
    2 – whether the development can provide adequate on-site servicing arrangements

Consultation on Broomhill Crookes Road junction changes

Local residents are being consulted on two options to make it easier to cross the road in Broomhill at the Crookes Road/Fulwood Road/Nile Street/Whitham Road junction.

One proposal would see vehicles banned from turning left from Fulwood Road into Crookes Road and an extra crossing inserted on Fulwood Road between the benches outside Cream coffee shop and Help the Aged:

The other option includes a slip road from Fulwood Road up to Crookes Road and would result in the loss of two parking spaces from the adjacent shopping parade.

Any changes will be of interest to readers of this website as they could indirectly affect the flow of traffic on both Lydgate Lane and also Manchester Road, two of the key routes up to Crosspool.

A Sheffield Star article says that members of Broomhill Forum have indicated a preference for the second option but final judgement is being reserved until more views are known.

Local pub facing demolition to make way for property development

A planning application (10/03887/FUL) has been submitted for the Hallamshire Hotel building on Lydgate Lane. It proposes that the former pub is demolished to make way for four dwelling houses, two apartments and detached garage block.

The planning, design and access statement (PDF, 515KB) for the application states:

There has been a succession of short term tenants, all of whom have failed to successfully operate a sustainable and profitable business. Clearly licensed use for this site is no longer the most viable form of operation.

The pub has been closed for several months now, with the windows boarded up.

Residents have until 25 January 2011 to comment on the application.

Revised convenience store appeal letter sent out

Following yesterday’s mix up regarding the closing date for commenting on the convenience store planning application appeal, a revised letter has now been sent out. This second letter features the new deadline date of 26 January 2011.

A copy of the new letter is below. If you have a view on the appeal then please submit your comments in one of three ways:

The original application was rejected on the grounds of unsuitable/insufficient car parking accommodation and inadequate on-site servicing provision and servicing from the highway.
