Bell of St Columba’s to ring out again

St Columba's: bells to ring out this morning
St Columba’s: bell to ring out this morning

Update 5 June 2012: sadly some technical problems arose, meaning the bell wasn’t able to ring on Sunday. The bell expert has been brought back in to fix it. We’ll let you know when it is working again.

After years of silence, the bell in the tower of St Columba’s church in Crosspool will ring out once again this morning.

The peal will take place just before 10am to mark the queen’s diamond jubilee.

Priest–in-charge at the church Reverend Frances Eccleston is planning on the bell getting more use from now on: “We hope to ring a brief peal on the bell before our 10am service on Sunday morning most weeks.”

The St Columba bell sits in the church tower behind four concrete panels. It was cast in Loughborough in 1901 before being set in the tower in December 1955.

Former Tapton pupil to feature in Crucible production

A former Tapton school pupil is appearing in a production at the Crucible theatre in July.

Jess Millward will appear in Babe the Sheep-Pig, a play based on the popular film and book, Babe by Dick King-Smith, on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 of July.

It is the opening production of the Sheffield Children’s Festival 2012 and is also this years BTEC Extended Diploma in Acting at Norton College and so the students will be performing various roles, including Ma the sheep, Farmer Hogget and, of course, Babe.

The play tells the tale of a courageous piglet’s remarkable adventure. After Babe is won by Farmer Hogget, they form an unbreakable bond, and with the help of the old sheep-dog, Fly, she soon learns the herding instinct. When the day of the Grand Challenge Sheep-Dog Trials arrives, the whole farm holds its breath to see whether Babe will triumph, against all odds, to become the hero of the farm.

Jess, a former pupil of Tapton School, will be playing the role of Ma the sheep on Monday 2 and involved in the ensemble on Tuesday 3. She is also involved in the costume side of the production. Jess first started acting in the well known Stephen Hill pantomime.

Tickets are available at the Sheffield Theatre’s Box Office (0114 249 6000) or on their website and are priced at £6 for adults and £4 for students/concessions.

If you passed through the precinct this weekend then you’ll see that flags have gone up above many of the shops.

They have been installed to mark the upcoming diamond jubilee and 2012 olympic games and will stay up until the end of the summer.

The flags were funded with a grant from the South West Community Assembly and were bought and put up with the help of Crosspool Forum.

Lydgate Reservoir housing plans in doubt

Plans to build new homes on the site of Lydgate Reservoir on Evelyn Road are in doubt following a statement from Yorkshire Water.

The information posted by Yorkshire Water’s Land Use Planning Manager on the consultation website reads:

I have now been informed by my operational colleagues that they are undertaking further investigations with regard to our distribution network in the area. Because of this I am not satisfied that there is in fact a “reasonable prospect” of the site coming forward within the plan period. I would therefore like to withdraw the site at least until our investigations are complete.

I am hopeful that we will have more certainty by the representations stage of the Publication Version and if in fact the site does prove to be surplus to operational use I will then ask for it to be included.

The site was one of 18 in Sheffield earmarked as part of a strategy to build 1,110 new homes.
