Could you lend at hand at a Crosspool-organised soup run that helps Sheffield’s homeless people?
For several years, volunteers from the community and local churches of Crosspool have been helping homeless people by making and distributing sandwiches, hot drinks and soup in designated city centre locations.
They do this every other Monday evening between September and May, arriving at 8pm and finishing before 9pm.
Organisers are looking for some more volunteers who would be willing to come down and help distribute the food and drinks. You can choose whether to help out one every four weeks, or every two weeks – most do a monthly rota.
If you are interested and would like to know more, then please email the organiser for Crosspool, Eddie.sherwood@btinternet.com.
Following last week’s Open Meeting, a local resident has launched an online petition to improve road safety in Crosspool.
View/sign the petition – Sheffield City Council website
The petition reads:
We the undersigned petition the council to:
- Implement a reduction in the speed limit to 20mph for the shopping precinct area at Crosspool and the parts of the service roads of Selbourne Road, Watt Lane, Benty Lane, and Sandygate Road nearest to the precinct
- Help to enforce this new limit with traffic calming measures including the ‘humping’ of the four existing Zebra Crossings.
Crosspool shopping precinct is a busy area used by large numbers of unaccompanied schoolchildren and with a high number of elderly residents. Recently an elderly resident was killed in a traffic accident on one of the crossings. Vehicles travel at high speed through the shopping precinct and it is inevitable that further accidents resulting in serious injury or death will occur unless preventative, safety measures are taken.

The second evening of acoustic pop in one of Crosspool’s cosiest venues will take place on Sunday 28 August.
Come along to Nest cafe on Sandygate Road to hear performers play live and unplugged, including Lofter, jazz/soul duo Kate and James and acoustic singer-songwriter Sophie Anna.
The inaugural acoustic night at Crosspool Festival was a big success – check out the videos below.
