Service of Remembrance

Crosspool Memorial

Today, Thursday 11th November at 11 am, a lone trumpeter, playing an emotive solo, joined the Rev. Suzanne Nockels in a service of remembrance around the Crosspool memorial in the Garden at Tapton Hill Congregational Church.

Eighteen people (one gentleman with a chest full of medals), came together in prayer to remember the sacrifice of those around the world whose life has been touched by conflict for democracy and freedom,

At the setting of the sun, we will remember them!!

This weekend Saturday, October 1st, and Sunday 2nd, Pumpkins & Presents will be hosting their sixth annual event with a brand NEW venue at Whirlow Hall Farm.

A feast for the eyes and senses awaits and ADMISSION is FREE to the huge Lambing Barn which has been transformed into a spectacular Autumnal gathering of makers and sellers with an emphasis on seasonality at this lovely time of year.

Over 25 handpicked traders will showcase HOME, GARDEN, LIFESTYLE, FOOD, and FEEL GOOD, indeed there will be something for everyone to enjoy a great weekend.

As well as supporting the fantastic work of Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, an important part of the event will be again fundraising for the DOG’S TRUST – so please bring along your four legged friends to join in the fun. Get creative and bring your carved Pumpkins to win a prize, or choose from a fantastic selection of locally grown pumpkins and purchase one or more to help raise money for this worthwhile charity.

Although everything takes place under cover in the large barn, there could be an Autumn chill in the air so don’t forget to wrap up warm.

Doors open at 11am and close at 4pm on both days.

The popular ‘Barn Cafe’ at Whirlow Hall Farm will be open all weekend as usual serving delicious hot and cold food and drinks, alongside a Bar and Hog Roast.

Pumpkins & Presents are looking forward to welcoming old Pumpkin friends as well as making many new ones.

Local Councillors Press for Clarity

Local councillors press for clarity on the Active Neighbourhood trial in Crookes and Walkley

Councillors have issued a statement about the Active Neighbourhood trial currently running in Crookes and Walkley. The councillors support the aims of the trial but say the implementation has been ‘unpredictable’ and ‘confusing’. At a meeting with the Council’s Head of Strategic Transport and Infrastructure, (Tomorrow Tuesday, September 27th) they will call for more clarity to be given on the trial and for local residents to have a say on how it progresses.

A Joint statement from Ruth Milsom and Minesh Parekh (Councillors for Crookes and Crosspool ward) and Tom Hunt and Ben Curran (Councillors for Walkley ward):

“All of us want to live on streets that are safe for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists. We want streets where children are safe to play out and that aren’t busy cut-throughs. That’s why we support the aims of the Active Neighbourhood trial in Crookes and Walkley. It was set up to try out ideas for how to make streets more liveable.

“But right from the beginning we have heard serious concerns from residents and businesses. People who like the changes as, well as people who don’t, have all told us that the initial public engagement and design process should have been better.

“We are now three months into a six-month formal consultation period, and too many of the trial measures still haven’t been implemented.

“Residents are frustrated with the uncertainty about what is happening and concerned about the implementation of the scheme. We share those concerns. No-one is satisfied with the current situation, whether they like the trial or not.

“When we meet the Council’s Head of Strategic Transport and Infrastructure we will press him for clear proposals for implementation, better communications with residents, and a programme of meaningful public involvement. The trial will have better outcomes and more legitimacy if the next steps are clearly informed by local public opinion”

Support Dogs – Looking for Volunteers

Could you look after a life-saving assistance dog of the future?

Sheffield-based national charity “Support Dogs” is urgently looking for volunteers to look after its puppies and young dogs before and during their training.

Sam, who has autism, with his life-changing assistance dog, Willow.

“Support Dogs”, whose training centre is in Brightside, trains assistance dogs for children with autism and adults with epilepsy and a range of serious medical conditions, enabling them to lead safer, more independent lives.

Janet Dyson with Frank

None of its puppies or dogs-in-training ever spends a night in kennels but stay with local dog-loving families in and around Sheffield. Due to high demands for its services, which are provided free of charge, the charity now needs more people to volunteer as puppy socialisers – who look after pups aged between eight weeks and 15 months – and foster carers – who look after young dogs in training, in the evenings and at weekends. Lots of support is provided, including holiday cover, and regular puppy classes.

If you’d like to find out more go to http://www.supportdogs.org.uk/volunteer or contact Support Dogs on 0114 2617800 or info@supportdogs.org.uk

A57 Snake Pass closure

To allow specialist contractors to investigate the causes of the February landslip, The A57 Snake Pass will be closed for four weeks from Monday 26th September.

A 57 Snake Pass

The road will be closed to all users from Hagg Farm to Doctors Gate, a distance of 5.6 miles. The contractors will need to use the remaining piece of road at the Alport slip for a drilling rig, so there will be no possibility of any vehicles getting past. There are turning places at either end of the closure.

There will be no through route for any vehicle over the Snake Pass while the work is taking place. Advisory signed diversion route will be at either end of the Snake Pass.
