Calver Fields armed mugging: Crosspool teenagers reminded to be vigilant

Carver fields

Local Neighbourhood Watch representatives are urging Crosspool teenagers to employ streetwise safety after three boys were threatened with guns and mugged near Calver Fields on Thursday 19 June around 11pm.

The teenagers were among the last to leave an end-of-exams gathering in the field near Hagg Lane. While walking up the hill to go home two men stopped them and threatened them with guns. The men escaped with at least one mobile phone.

The boys called the police, who met them at the junction of Hagg Lane and Manchester Road. You may have heard a police helicopter looking for the perpetrators later on Thursday night.

If you have teenagers celebrating the end of term or passing exams then a reminder to be extra vigilant.

The spirit of the Tour de France arrived in Crosspool today as handmade bunting, an official flag and a yellow bike were installed in the precinct.

As well as red, white and blue bunting, Crosspool Forum volunteers have also hand-knitted mini Tour de France jerseys which have been draped on the streetlight near GT News.

An official yellow tour flag is hanging above the chemist and a bike sprayed with yellow paint can now be found at the foot of the tree outside Spar.

A fire at a house on Cardoness Road was reported around 6.40pm last night and subsequently dealt with by the fire service.

There was one minor casualty, with a woman in her 50s treated for minor smoke inhalation but she did not need to attend hospital.

The fire, which involved a motorbike, started in a garage then spread into the kitchen of an adjoining house. The garage and kitchen suffered extensive damaged, and the rest of the house was heavily smoke logged.

Early indications are that the fire started accidentally, involving electrics in the garage.

The road was cordoned off, with three fire engines and police remaining on the scene until around 8.50pm.

Crosspool was awash with colour this week as flags were hung above the shops.

This year’s various flags include the white rose of Yorkshire, to mark the visit of the Tour de France to the county, flags to show support for England (and Italy, if you look above Guido’s!) in the world cup and also Union flags above some of the other shops.
