The new CDYST basket swing was paid for with the help of Crosspool Festival

Money raised from last summer’s Crosspool Festival has helped provide new community facilities at Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST).

A new basket swing with safety flooring can be found in the Coldwell Lane playground and is available for all under 10s to use.

Money from festival events, along with a Sheffield City Council grant, paid for the new equipment.

Hallam FC Youdan Cup featured on Antiques Roadshow

The world's oldest football trophy
The world’s oldest football trophy

Hallam FC was mentioned as part of a feature on Sunday night’s Antiques Roadshow on BBC1.

The Crosspool football club was featured as the TV programme looked at a mid-Victorian jug that turns out to probably be the oldest football trophy in the world. It is also known as the Youdan Cup.

Club historian Phil Farnsworth explained more about the 1866 trophy – and found out that its £50,000 insurance is not enough to cover the cup’s real value.

Have you found a missing watch in Crosspool?

A Crosspool lady has lost her watch and is asking residents if they have seen it.

The stainless steel Fossil watch went missing somewhere between the precinct and the sorting office on Tapton Hill Road. It has considerable sentimental value but doesn’t have much monetary value.

If you find it then you can drop it off at the pet shop. Or if you have any more information of questions then get in touch with Crosspool Forum on crosspoolforum@fsmail.net or  07713 687 955.

Alpacas make their home in Crosspool on Holly Hagg

alpacas2

A small herd of alpacas are settling in on a field near Hagg Lane allotments in Crosspool.

The three male animals have the run of Holly Hagg, a three-acre plot on the hill where Long Lane meets Back Lane/Bole Hill Road. They’ve been there about four weeks.

They’re very hardy animals, and a north-facing slope in Sheffield is nothing compared to where the species originated in the Andes. They don’t like getting wet so have a shelter at the bottom of the field.

Holly Hagg isn’t open access, but you can usually get a good view of the alpacas from Long Lane. If you see someone working in the field when you visit then have a word with them and you should be able to take a closer look.

The alpacas are neutered and were sold as ‘seconds’. They don’t hold much financial value but are microchipped, tagged and registered with the British Alpaca Society for easy identification.

The herd and Holly Hagg are a looked after by community group called Friends of Holly Hagg. Their aim is to make the land more fertile, biodiverse, beautiful and productive. As well as the alpacas, there’s already plenty going on with bee hives, a pond ready to be filled, a simple irrigation system and plots for vegetables.

If you want to find out more or get involved with Friends of Holly Hagg, get in touch with Claire via Facebook, on 07779 067718 or by emailing claire@gregorysheffield.plus.com.
