Den Bank Drive tree removed

On 21 December, residents of Den Bank Drive returned from work to discover that a tree had been removed without warning from a grass verge on the street.

A card was left to say that the tree was dead, although according to residents it had full blossom last Spring.

Further enquiries to Street Force reveal that the tree had been inspected earlier on in the year and was diagnosed as infected. There is no budget available to pay for a replacement tree in the current financial year.

Den Bank Drive resident Mark Shipman commented: “I am upset that the tree was removed without any communication until afterwards.”

Revised convenience store appeal letter sent out

Following yesterday’s mix up regarding the closing date for commenting on the convenience store planning application appeal, a revised letter has now been sent out. This second letter features the new deadline date of 26 January 2011.

The original application was rejected on the grounds of unsuitable/insufficient car parking accommodation and inadequate on-site servicing provision and servicing from the highway.

Convenience store planning application appeal: submit your comments by 26 January

As expected, Turner Investments Ltd have submitted an appeal against the decision to refuse permission for planning application 10/02657/FUL, a convenience store in the current Motor World premises on Lydgate Lane.

This morning, Crosspool residents who commented on the application received a letter stating that the appeal started on 15 December and it appears that the window for comments is due to close ~~today, Wednesday 29~~ ~~December~~. It turns out that this should have read Wednesday 26 January 2011. A revised letter expected shortly.

Computer courses starting in January 2011 in Crosspool

Three computer courses are starting next month in Crosspool, two National Open College Network ones run by Crosspool Forum and one BBC First Click Beginners course run by Tuition Extra. Details are below:

National Open College Network courses

Following in the success of the two previous computer courses, and wishing to build on the student’s achievements, Crosspool Forum has managed to secure patronage for two further National Open College Network (NOCN) 10 week courses.

They run on Fridays, starting on 14 January 2011 at St Columba’s Church Hall on Manchester Road. Laptops are provided. The two courses are:

Using ICT Computer Basic
Word, desktop publishing and paint
9:30am-11:30am

Word processing level 1 & level 2
11:45am-1:45pm

The NOCN courses carry a modest charge of £1 per hour for tuition, plus a £6 per term enrolment fee, so a 20 hour course will cost £26. Learners on income-related benefits pay to enrol and nothing else.

BBC First Click Beginners email and internet course

Have you got a new laptop, netbook or smartphone for Christmas and have no idea how to use it? Why not book in for a beginners course at Tuition Extra in Crosspool to help you get started?

Tuition Extra on Sandygate Road has teamed up with the BBC’s First Click initiative which aims to help out people who don’t know how to use the internet. We are planning to cover many topics including:

how to open and use an e-mail account
how to use a web browser
using price comparison sites to get cheaper insurance and utility bills
using Facebook and Twitter
and anything else you want to learn how to do

If you have your own laptop or other mobile device you can bring it along or you can use one of our computers.

Courses will be starting in the new year from 10-11.30am during the week at a cost of £5 per session. Tuition Extra is located in Crosspool shops in the flat above A Villa Caruso (52 Sandygate Road). Places must be booked in advance by calling Carolyn Sleath on 0114 230 9566 or 07875 039887. When we have five participants, the course will run.

Boxing day match postponed

This was issued by Hallam FC this morning:

Following a pitch inspection at 10.00 am this morning (23rd December 2010), it is with great regret that the Boxing Day 150th Anniversary Match between Hallam FC & Sheffield FC at The Worlds Oldest Football Ground, Sandygate Road, Sheffield has had to be postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Good news

A date for the match to be played has been pencilled in for Good Friday the 22nd of April 2011 – which will round off Hallam FCs 150th Season.

ALL TICKETS PURCHASED FOR BOXING DAY WILL BE VALID FOR THE RE-ARRANGED DATE and we will keep you informed on confirmation of the fixture date as soon as we have approval from both Leagues.

Despite the huge disappointment of not being able to add this historic spectacle to your festive season Hallam FC would like to wish you and yours all the best for Christmas and The New Year and look forward to seeing you in April.

Boxing day match latest

Hallam FC have issued an update about Sunday’s big match against Sheffield FC:

Tickets are still available to purchase in person from the Plough pub on Sandygate Road
If you have already ordered tickets online, the final date that they were posted out was 20 December. Any ordered via the internet after this date will be available for collection at the ground on the day
With supporters travelling from around the UK and abroad, a pitch inspection is planned for tomorrow (Thursday 23 December) to assess the impact of the current cold spell. Following this an update will be issued regarding the likelihood of the match taking place, as the club very much hopes it will. There will also be a pitch inspection on the day of the match
A commemorative programme and limited edition Badges (numbered 1- 150) will also be on sale on the day

We’ll pass on any news as soon as we get it after tomorrow’s pitch inspection.

51 bus service over the holiday period

First Mainline route 51 — First will run a reduced 51 bus service over the holiday period

First South Yorkshire has announced the timetable for the 51 bus route over Christmas and new year.

No buses will run on Christmas day, Boxing day or new year’s day, and a Saturday service will operate on many other days over the festive season.

Sandygate visitors centre on track following six-figure Hallam FC donation

A £280,000 visitors centre is likely to be built in 2011 at Sandygate after a loyal fan left Hallam football club an unexpected donation in his will.

Long-term supporter Roger Bell followed the Countrymen home and away but never told anyone at the Crosspool club his plans to leave them a financial gift when he passed away.

The money will be used to fund ground improvements, including a visitors centre and new clubhouse.

Route 51 bus fare discounts to continue

Bus operator First has announced that the current discount fares on the 51 bus running from Lodge Moor to Charnock via town are to continue until at least March 2011.

The promotional fares, which were launched last June, mean that a single journey from Crosspool to town costs £1.60, compared to the previous price of £1.95.

The operator says that the 51 has seen encouraging growth in passenger number and the price reductions continue the company’s strategy of using promotions to stimulate passenger growth.

The promotional prices for route 51 are:

Maximum single fare £1.95

Crosspool businesses open despite major snowfall

Shops and businesses in Crosspool opened this morning despite what the council is describing as the deepest December Sheffield snowfall for a century.

The photos below were taken just before 9am this morning, and show Philip James butchers, GT News, Spar and the greengrocers all open for business. MG Mosley & Sons milk float was also out and about making deliveries as normal.

Local community spirit was also in evidence, with residents assisting with the clearing of snow and making trips to the shops to pick up supplies for neighbours. With the local schools all closed today (Wednesday 1 December 2010), children are also making the most of the snow with sledging and snowballing.

People are being encouraged to only use cars if absolutely necessary and also check that elderly neighbours are coping with the conditions.

Travel South Yorkshire advises that bus services have been suspended until further notice.
