Crosspool student is one of Sheffield’s best

As Crosspool sixth formers celebrated their A Level results this week, one Tapton school student found out that he’d scooped seven A* grades.

George Lee achieved the top grade in French, Spanish, general studies, maths, further maths, critical thinking and physics. He is now heading to Imperial College in London to study maths.

He was one of 31 students at Tapton who achieved straight As and A* grades. However, school’s overall pass rate at the three top grades – A*, A and B – fell from 63% to 56%.

Transit van torched on Lydgate Lane

A sat nav system and laptop bag were stolen from a Transit van parked on Lydgate Lane on Thursday 28 July.

Thieves broke in to the van at around 00.30am. Upon discovering that the laptop bag only contained papers, they threw it into Lydgate Park and set the van on fire.

The following day, someone removed the van’s rear lights and drained the diesel from the vehicle. It is not known if these incidents were connected to the break-in and torching.

The Plough pub temporarily closes

The Plough, Crosspool
The Plough: will reopen at the end of the month

The Plough on Sandygate Road is no longer open for business – but should reopen before the end of the month.

The pub is one of several leased and operated by Hawk Inns North Limited. Glenn Thorpe, Director, said: “Due to administrative errors in all our Premises Licences we have had to temporarily close all the pubs operating within the Sheffield Licensing District.

“This is not a particular problem specific to The Plough as all our pubs will reopen with Temporary Event Notices on the 28 of July for periods of four days at a time and then will be fully open again from 11 August.”

A sign in window of the pub (pictured below) states that an alcohol licence was re-applied for on 15 July 2011.
