Petition launched over off-centre Sandygate Road markings

Concerned Crosspool residents are collecting signatures for a petition regarding the position of the painted white lines on Sandygate Road.

The road markings were repainted following resurfacing work and have divided the road into a wider uphill lane and a narrower downhill lane.

Resident Marie Biggs explained: “My main concern is that vehicles are travelling far too fast up the road and hogging the white lines. This doesn’t leave any space for vehicles and cyclists travelling downhill towards Crosspool, which have to cross the white lines to pass parked vehicles.

“Amey/Streets Ahead told me that the reason the lines are as they are is to allow for the safe overtaking of cyclists coming uphill – but what ablout the cyclists travelling downhill?

“And, if there was to be a collision, would drivers travelling down the road always be deemed to be at fault, purely because they are straddling the white lines?”

The petition can be signed in GT News and the Post Office.

CDYST cycle track plans halted

The trustees at Crosspool and District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) have decided not to go ahead with plans for a cycle track on the site.

They explain:

For numerous reasons and after careful consideration of all the issues involved, the CDTST trustees have decided that unfortunately it is not feasible for the proposed cycle track to go ahead.

The research that we have done and the negotiations that we have had has lead us to believe that the work is untenable.

We thank everyone who took the time to respond with their comments about the intended project.

Rivelin Splash reopens after winter break

Rivelin Splash water play area has reopened for bank holiday week and will be open each day until 31 May.

From 6 June to 13 July it’ll open for weekends only and then from 13 July until 7 September it’ll be open seven days a week. Opening times are 11am-5pm.

The water play area was refurbished in 2013.

Volunteers wanted to help water precinct hanging baskets

Could you spare an hour a week to help water the hanging baskets at Crosspool shops?

The flower displays have been a regular feature in the precinct for many years and since last summer Crosspool Forum volunteers have taken on the watering of the hanging baskets.

We’re looking for people who can possibly spare the time each week – between 30 minutes and an hour – to help with watering. This will be from June to early September, depending on how long the summer lasts.

Update on CDYST cycle track

The trustees at Crosspool and District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) have an update regarding plans to install a cycle track at the facility.

We have received some encouraging news about a possible grant for the
proposed cycling area and cycle track on the CDYST playing field.

To recap briefly, we are proposing tarmacking a flat area, approximately 15m by 16m, to the left of the building, as seen from Coldwell Lane. We would also tarmac a cycling track which would run from the building down to the tennis courts, with a small turning area at the bottom. This would not interfere in any way with the football pitch.

To date people seem to be overwhelmingly in support of the project and welcome a safe, traffic free area where young people can learn to ride a bike and where older people can brush up their cycling skills.

Space for Cycling campaign highlights Crookes pinch point

The bend of Crookes Road next to The Grindstone pub has been identified as dangerous for cyclists by a campaign to make Sheffield’s roads safer.

Space for Cycling named the pinch point created by road narrowing by the pub as the main issue in Crookes ward.

Improvements for Fulwood ward were also highlighted.

Organiser Cycle Sheffield is asking all local council election candidates to pledge to support specific cycle improvements in all 28 wards in Sheffield.

A Space for Cycling ride on Saturday saw hundreds of people, including children and families ride through the streets of Sheffield to call for a more cycle-friendly city.

Refurbishment at Bamforths

Crosspool greengrocer Bamforths will be closed for refurbishment from Wednesday 22 to Wednesday 29 April.

The owners, Michelle and Wayne, have said that they expect the shop to reopen on Thursday 30 April.

Crosspool post office reopens following Spar refurbishment

Thew new-look Crosspool post office inside Spar

Crosspool post office reopened its hatches earlier today following a two-week renovation.

The new-look counter has been rotated 90 degrees and extra floor space has been created at the back of the shop.

The whole Spar shop has been smartened up with new units and a new illuminated sign outside.

Wanted: your views on a possible cycle track at CDYST

The trustees at Crosspool and District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST) would like your thoughts on the possibility of installing a cycle track at the facility.

Last summer we were asked to consider providing a cycle track on the grassed area to the left of the sports hall, when viewed from Coldwell Lane.

We have done some research and have hopefully secured some funding to go ahead with this project, but would welcome your ideas and thoughts before we proceed any further.

We envisage tarmacking a grassed area approximately 16m by 15m where children, and those who lack confidence on a bike, can safety practice their cycling skills on a flat piece of ground, away from the traffic. We could also consider painting on some road markings such as a mini roundabout, a give way sign etc.

In addition, we are considering making a long cycling track, again out of tarmac, which would run from the building, down towards the tennis courts, with a small turning circle at the end. This would not interfere with the football pitch in any way.

Is this something which you feel is a good idea, or would you prefer the land to be left as a grassed area? Any thoughts, ideas and suggestions would be very welcome.

We would appreciate the responses as soon as possible, as there is a time limit for applying for the grant. Unless we can secure this funding, we will be unable to proceed with the project.

Festival helps provide new CDYST basket swing

Money raised from last summer’s Crosspool Festival has helped provide new community facilities at Crosspool & District Youth Sports Trust (CDYST).

A new basket swing with safety flooring can be found in the Coldwell Lane playground and is available for all under 10s to use.

Money from festival events, along with a Sheffield City Council grant, paid for the new equipment.
