Crosspool restaurant Aligarh has ceased trading.

The Indian restaurant opened last October but appeared to be closed over the weekend, with a sign in the window stating it had ceased trading and apologising for any inconvenience caused. A cookery masterclass was due to take place today.

A spokesperson for the business said a statement would be issued in a few days. As of Sunday night, there was no mention of the closure on the restaurant’s website.

Another customer had a big party booked and when they turned up the place was shut and in darkness. Someone else said: “It’s so sad, I thought they would do well.”

Updated 5 October 2015:

This statement has been issued:

It is with great sadness and regret that we have to announce that Aligarh Indian Restaurant in Crosspool has now ceased trading.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly but unfortunately it is a decision we have had to make.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers past and present for their continued support.

We are sure this will be a great disappointment to all our customers and the local community which we served however please rest assured that if we could have avoided the closure we would have.

The Plough pub listed as community asset

The Plough pub on Sandygate Road has been listed as an asset of community value.

This means that that in the event of it being put up for sale the group lodging the application would be given time to come up with a bid to buy it. There is no guarantee that this bid would be accepted by the seller.

With the rumoured threat of the pub being sold and turned into a convenience store, a group of regulars have launched an online change.org petition and a paper petition in the pub that you’re invited to sign. There’s also a Save the Plough Facebook community group which they’ll use to keep everyone up to date.

The Plough is one of three remaining pubs in Crosspool and it is believed that a public house has stood on the site for around 400 years. The pub is famously located opposite Hallam FC’s Sandygate stadium, the oldest football ground in the world.

Crosspool’s tea and coffee shop will close for building work before reopening under new management.

Outgoing Lounge @ Crosspool owner Paula, who set up the cafe in April 2012, is retiring. She said:

“After making 38,000 pots of tea, 20,000 coffees and lots of burnt tea cakes I have sadly hung up my soggy, flour covered apron for good! I have had the best 3-and-a-half years and realised my dream.

“I have learnt so much taking my little sad shop and transforming it into a very successful business that I will always be proud of. I have made some amazing life long friends and thank you so much for letting me into your lives. Heartfelt thanks. Paula xxx”

We’ll miss you, Paula! As soon as we have details of plans for the cafe we’ll share them.
